Television has its May Sweeps, and comic books has … well, whatever this is — a week when Marvel and DC pull out the stops with several new, and notable, releases.
DC’s Vertigo imprint slaps a new coat of paint on the House of Mystery, while the central “universe” kicks off a special issue and three miniseries that may or may not be tied into the big Final Crisis summer extravaganza.
Marvel, meanwhile, welcomes the much-touted return of Alex Ross with Avengers/Invaders, and hopes to take advantage of interest generated by the Iron Man movie with a new ongoing series by Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca, and a miniseries by film director Jon Favreau and Adi Granov. (The first issue of Fraction and Larroca’s Invincible Iron Man has six covers!) Plus, there’s the second issue of Secret Invasion.
Elsewhere, Dark Horse gives us another issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Paul Grist delivers another issue of the not-quite-monthly Jack Staff, and First Second releases two anticipated graphic novels, Kaput & Zosky and Three Shadows.
To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.
Chris’ pick of the week: Gary Panter hardcover slipcase
Gary Panter’s always been one of those “love him or hate him” artists. People either dig his punk primitive style or scratch their heads and say “I don’t get it.” I’m decidedly in the former camp, but I’m not entirely without sympathy for the latter. Panter’s work can be hard to break into sometimes.
One would hope this impressive, 668-page, two-volume slipcased retrospective of the man’s work would go a long way toward bridging that divide. The fact that it’s a pricey $95 dollars will probably prevent such an event from occurring, but still — goddamn if that isn’t one hell of a package. The first volume’s all paintings, comics and essays. The second is entirely sketchbook material. Put them together and you have the one must-get item on my Xmas list this year.
Kevin’s pick of the week: House of Mystery #1
If this reimagining of DC’s long-running horror-suspense anthology is half as entertaining as Steven Seagle and Teddy Kristiansen’s mid-’90s revival of House of Secrets, I’ll be happy.
In this latest version of House of Mystery, writers Matthew Sturges and Bill Willingham and artist Luca Rossi focus on five characters trapped in a supernatural bar who try to figure out how and why they’re stuck there. Sure, the set-up a little like an episode of The Twilight Zone, but the gimmick of those horror titles was always part of the charm.
What interests me more is that, at least for the initial storyline, Willingham is teaming with artists like Ross Campbell, Jill Thompson and Bernie Wrightson for a series of back-up stories, presented as tales told by the bar’s customers. And the gorgeous covers by Sam Weber don’t hurt, either.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 #14
Kevin: The “Wolves at the Gate” story arc, by series artist Georges Jeanty and Lost and Cloverfield screenwriter Drew Goddard, continues. But the real reason I’m spotlighting this issue is Jon Foster’s terrific cover, which casts Dawn as a giant monster (of sorts) stomping Tokyo.
Action Comics Annual #11
Kevin: Like MacArthur to the Philippines, or Heinberg to Wonder Woman, the creative team of Richard Donner, Geoff Johns and Adam Kubert finally returns for the conclusion of “Superman: Last Son” — a six-part story that began way back in December 2006. Yes, 2006.
American Splendor Season Two #2 (of 4)
Chris: Ty Templeton, David Lapham, Hunt Emerson, Dean Haspiel and Josh Neufeld, among others, tackle the art chores for this second issue. Cover is by Darick Robertson. I remember Emerson and Pekar being a good pairing and am curious to see how they’ll fare this time around.
Crayon Shinchan, Vol. 2
Chris: I really enjoyed the first volume about this hyperactive, ill-mannered kindergartner, constant and really unwarranted allusions to South Park and The Simpsons aside. I’m sure there’s lots more pants-dropping action in the second!
Crossing Midnight #18
Kevin: And here we arrive at the penultimate issue of Mike Carey and Jim Fern’s fascinating, and occasionally disturbing, urban fantasy. I’ll miss this book.
DC Universe Special — Justice League of America
Kevin: With the fairly obscure JLA villain Libra and the Injustice Gang positioned as major players in the upcoming Final Crisis, DC collects some of their greatest hits from the 1970s Justice League of America. Bask in the glory of the Floronic Man!
JLA Presents: Aztek — The Ultimate Man
Kevin: This collects the short-lived, but well-remembered, mid-’90s series by the writing team of Grant Morrison and the then-relatively unknown Mark Millar.
Rann/Thanagar: Holy War #1 ( of 8 )
Kevin: DC and Jim Starlin keep beating the cosmic-adventure drum with this miniseries that’s sure to be overshadowed by Final Crisis.
Tor #1 (of 6)
The War That Time Forgot #1 (of 12)
Kevin: I guess these two miniseries are timed to coincide with Final Crisis, to illustrate the length and breadth of the DC Universe. Bruce Jones, whose work at DC/Vertigo has been mediocre at best, is penning The War That Time Forgot. However, Tor co-creator Joe Kubert is writing and illustrating the other miniseries. So, DC gets points for that.
Jack Staff #16
Kevin: After a slight delay, Paul Grist’s “monthly” series continues, with Tom Tom the Robot going up against Jack Staff, and Albert Bramble, vampire hunter, facing Albert Bramble … vampire.
Pretty Baby Machine #1 (of 3)
Kevin: Clark Westerman and Kody Chamberlain break out the tommy guns as Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson and Machine Gun Kelly — see how the title works? — unite against Al Capone.
Suburban Glamour, Vol. 1
Kevin: This collects Jamie McKelvie’s well-received modern fantasy.
Avengers/Invaders #1 (of 12)
Kevin: For fans of Alex Ross’ brand of superhero comics, this miniseries is probably the pick of the week, if not the year. Teaming with frequent writing collaborator Jim Krueger (Justice, Earth X) and artist Steve Sadowski, Ross transports The Invaders — Captain America, Bucky, Sub-Mariner, the Human Torch and Toro — from the 1940s to the present, where they come face to face with The Avengers. Sure, it’s happened before. But this time, there are two teams of Avengers, and the modern-day Steve Rogers is dead. I guess those twists, and whatever foe they’re confronting, is enough for 12 issues.
Franklin Richards: Not So Secret Invasion
Kevin: I say this most every time a Franklin Richards one-shot is released, but it really is one of the most enjoyable comics out there. Here, the son of Reed and Sue, with his robot pal H.E.R.B.I.E. in tow, take on a Skrull invasion — plus, several other crises.
Invincible Iron Man #1
Kevin: This new ongoing series, launched to capitalize on the popularity of the movie, has me buying what I think is my first Iron Man comic ever. That’s not because I like the character, or because the movie left me with a warm fuzzy feeling (I haven’t seen it; heck, I’ve yet to watch the second and third Spider-Man films, or the final X-Men). No, writer Matt Fraction is the big selling point for me.
Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas #1 (of 4)
Kevin: Iron Man movie director Jon Favreau and fan-favorite artist Adi Granov send Tony Stark to Sin City.
Omega: The Unknown #8 (of 10)
The Boys #18
Chris: Can’t let a month go by without at least nodding in the general direction of these two releases.
Secret Invasion #2 ( of 8 )
Chris: A small little art comix that will no doubt sell very poorly in most shops, if any stores at all bother to pick it up. Very indie. I believe there’s some political intrigue involved for those curious. Perhaps even a metaphor for current events!
Amelia Rules, Vol. 4: When The Past Is A Present hardcover
Chris: Jimmy Gownley has managed to make quite an impressive space for himself with this all-ages series. I imagine his new deal with Scholastic will make that space considerably larger. This latest volume collects most of the recent issues of the series, including the much acclaimed “Things We Cannot Change” story.
Amor y Cohetes: A Love and Rockets Book
Chris: When I first heard Fantagraphics was going to be repackaging the entire first run of L&R into “manga-sized” volumes, my initial reaction was something akin to sticking my fingers in my ears and screaming “LA LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU.” Now I’m donating my earlier volumes to the local library in favor of these new editions. Rather than make the art seem shrunken and cramped, they actually enhance the Hernandezs’ skill and storytelling abilities. Quelle suprise. This final volume collects all the “miscellaneous” material, including Beto’s biography of Frida Kahlo, the Errata Stigmata tales, “Rocky and Fumble” and all the Mario stories. That, in case you were wondering, makes it just as essential as the previous six volumes.
The Comics Journal Library, Vol. 1: Jack Kirby
Chris: No doubt intended to tie into the release of Mark Evanier’s big coffee-table book, Fantagraphics is re-releasing this collection of interviews and essays with and about the King that originally ran in The Comics Journal. It’s a nice package.
Kaput & Zosky
Chris: Two zany space aliens, ever on the look-out for worlds to conquer, constantly run into trouble and/or see their plans thwarted. A new all-ages release from First Second. It’s by Lewis Trondheim (with art assistance by Eric Cartier), so quality is assured.
Dr. Slump, Vol. 15
Nana, Vol. 10
Naruto, Vol. 29
Nodame Cantabile, Vol. 13
Prince of Tennis, Vol. 25
Chris: It’s a pretty big week for manga, with a number of big-name, or at least warmly beloved, series releasing their latest installments. My eyes quickly noted these titles while scanning Diamond’s list, but no doubt you’ll see one or two volumes you’re interested in as well. Also note the NANA Essentials handbook for all you hardcore NANA junkies.
The Man With No Name: The Good, the Bad and the Uglier #1
Kevin: When I think of movie properties that cry out for comic-book adaptations, the four-decades-old Man With No Name character made famous by Clint Eastwood isn’t among them. On the plus side, it’s written by Christos Gage. On the minus side, there’s a “zombie” variant.
Powr Masters, Vol. 1 (of 6) — offered again
Chris: If you missed the first volume of C.F.’s bizarre-yet-compelling fantasy epic, now’s your chance to get with the program. And, hey, there’s a sex scene involving giant jellyfish! You don’t want to pass that up.
Three Shadows
Chris: Despite some (admittedly rather large) missteps, Cyril Pedrosa’s mournful, highly allegorical story of a father coming to terms with the death of his young son is one of the most compelling, extraordinary books I’ve read so far this year. Pedrosa’s artistic skill is jaw-dropping at times, especially considering the way he alters his style to fit the emotional context of each scene. Expect to see this on a lot of “best of” lists at the end of the year.
Why Are You Doing This?
Chris: I was going to say something snarky like “Because I like to make fun of comics with silly titles,” but then I realized this is a re-release of Jason’s tightly-wound ode to Hitchcock, about a man framed for a murder he didn’t commit, so I’ll withdraw my snark. I really like Jason’s work.

Not reading Iron Man: Director of SHIELD? Too bad, it’s an excellent book. Even with Tony Stark being a total prick during Civil War, it’s been one of my favorite reads each month. Even if I can’t figure out exactly when everything takes place, when juxtaposed with Captain American and Mighty Avengers (and now, SI), I still recommend the book while it lasts.
I’d guess the book will catch up with Secret Invasion soon, allowing Nick Fury to take over SHIELD again (at which time the book’s name will change and Invincible will be the only “grown-up” IM book being made). At any rate, the Knaufs deserve props for their excellent work!

Oh, and ACTION Annual #11… I really, really hate myself for buying it. But I’m going to. After starting in on a story that held promise, I feel I’m entitled to some resolution. Even if the “surprise” of Chris joining the Kent family has been ruined. Hopefully the damned book is at least worth the wait.
I feel like DC should’ve at least knocked the price down $1, and thrown in the additional pages gratis… As a sort of “thank you” for waiting so long.

I am not someone who is easily satisfied but I have to say your work blew me away. So much ideas and relevant information that you put into it made me see your point of view. Thanks for communicating your reasonable inputs.
