Universal options Guggenheim’s Resurrection

Resurrection #1

Universal Pictures has acquired the rights to Resurrection, the Oni Press sci-fi series by Marc Guggenheim and David Dumeer.

The comic book picks up years after alien invaders have left Earth, as a group of survivors fight to take back the planet. The six-issue miniseries ongoing series began in October.

Universal-based Scott Stuber (The Kingdom, The Wolf Man) will produce the movie with Eric Gitter of Closed on Mondays Entertainment, the production arm of Oni Press. Guggenheim and Oni’s Peter Schwerin will serve as executive producers.

Resurrection is Oni’s third project with Universal, following Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and B. Clay Moore and Jeremy Haun’s The Leading Man.

I have to say I saw this coming, especially after hearing him talk about it in NYCC interviews.

  2. Jason Dincauze Says:

Um.. Awesome, Lolxomic. Your input is so appreciated.

Moving on from that outburst… Guggenheim deserves whatever he gets, Eli Stone has been awesome, and hopefully they will either let him write the screenplay or just leave the damn thing alone so it ends up like what he originally wrote.

Plus, just an observation, but maybe Oni should have one of their projects get released before they pat themselves on the back too hard about all their projects with Universal

  3. Josh Jones Says:

Great news, but “miniseries”? Didn’t Guggenheim and Oni and everyone else involved tout this book as an ongoing?

  4. Kevin Melrose Says:

I don’t remember seeing it referred to as an “ongoing.” The Oni website lists Issue 6 as the “finale.”

  5. Christopher Shields Says:

    That is awesome news!

  6. Josh Jones Says:

“I don’t remember seeing it referred to as an ‘ongoing.’ The Oni website lists Issue 6 as the ‘finale.’”

It was originally solicited as an ongoing, and both Guggenheim and Dumeer have stated in interviews that it is (or was) an ongoing book.

  7. James Lucas Jones Says:

Hey, all! This is definitely exciting news for us at Oni Press! Both posters who commented on RESURRECTION’s format are correct–RESURRECTION is an ongoing *and* issue 6 is the finale. ;) Allow me to explain… Issue 6 is the end of the first arc of the series that has always been intended as an ongoing. It’s also the last issue being published for a few months because we’re relaunching later in the year with a new #1 and a format change–the book is moving to full color!

We love this book and what Marc and David are doing with it so much that we decided we had to do something drastic to get this series into more people’s hands. The relaunch will be all new material that both follows on the events of our first arc *and* starts in a way that’s completely accessible for new readers. Marc has big plans ahead for this comic and we couldn’t be happier to be moving forward in such a big way.

(And for the record, this is just one of a new batch of full color comics from Oni. Stay tuned for more color series announcements as we lead up to Comic-Con International in San Diego.)

Thanks to all the folks who’ve posted kind notes here and been so supportive since the book’s launch last Fall. Trust me, there are plenty of twists and turns, surprises and sucker-punches on the road ahead–we’re just getting started.

  8. Mundungus Says:

I remember it being an ongoing as well.

Great news for Guggenheim and everyone else involved, though it seems anything can get optioned as a movie these days.

  9. Kolimar Says:

And the list of movies keeps growing. YAY! :)

  10. James Lucas Jones Says:

Trust me, sir. There is no back-patting going on around here–to be frank, there’s no time with all the great upcoming comic and graphic novel projects we’re working on. ;)

  11. This is AWESOME Says:

I met the editor i think it was at NYCC. Supercool guy, I am ecstatic that this is going to be turned into a movie. This book is what a sequel to Independence Day might have been. Show what happens after the good guys win, and dont make it so great and wonderful but show the struggle that occurs when civilization is almost exterminated. GREAT NEWS and if they let Guggenheim write it even better. Lets hope the suits at Universal dont tinker with it the way they did Bionic woman.

  12. Chris Rider Says:

I became a huge fan of Guggenheim after his run on the flash. I snatched up Resurrection after seeing the interview here on newsarama (had to convince my LCS to order it, and now they’ve ordered extras).

I love this news on the movie, and on the relaunch in color.

Marc, if you’re reading this and Eli Stone gets renewed, find a way to sneak a spock cameo into one of eli’s visions.

  13. Eric Arsenault Says:

Thanks for the infos Mr. Jones, can you tell us if the TPB collecting the first 6 issues mini will be in color then or still B&W ?

Either way, I am waiting for the TPB, and Guggenheim as stated before that he would tweak the dialogue among other things for the TPB.

Maintenance is also another great serie I would like to see in color, its very funny and full of action and possibilities.

  14. James Lucas Jones Says:

Eric, we have big plans for the TPB but I’m not ready to spill the beans on them quite yet… Thanks for the kind words on Maintenance! I feel very close to that book and wish more people would check it out!
