I grew up reading the Grell Warlord books, and as Travis Morgan's later outfit was far from modest.

None of those things were ignored or forgotten, actually. The whole point of the article is that there so many different motivations involved, no single one is more right than the others.

But also, no one is less right than the others.

You're forgetting two things:

1) Sonja had a different outfit first, and that the "silver bikini" echoed other Maroto characters; that's explained here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Sonja#Bikini

2) Also, Sonja in that garb is an inversion of the damsel in distress prevalent in the paintings of Frazetta and others. Sonja demonstrates that a woman need not only be a sexy additon to a painting or book cover, but an ass-kicker in her own right.

While it's shameful there aren't more strong super heroines modestly dressed, I don't think it's some chauvinistic attempt to balance the woman's role, but because boobs sell. It doesn't take a Master's in psychology to know that the thing underweight and overweight single guys go for is an alluring pair. There's no subtext other than the fact that publishers know their audience. I am all for trying to introduce female characters who don't have to peddle their flesh to attract attention, but I'm also all for not jumping to reactionary conclusions.

Considering the genre, Sonja is overdressed compared to Conan.

A hero in just his underwear doesn't count?

Like Conan? Or Martian Manhunter?

I was just thinking yesterday that it's high time someone creates a male superhero who fights crime in just a G-string and knee boots.
