It doesn't take a Master's in psychology to know that the thing underweight and overweight single guys go for is an alluring pair. There's no subtext other than the fact that publishers know their audience. I am all for trying to introduce female characters who don't have to peddle their flesh to attract attention, but I'm also all for not jumping to reactionary conclusions.
