BOOM! Studios sent over some preview pages of a couple of books they have coming out in June … first, High Rollers:
And here’s the cover to issue 2, due in July … both covers are by Brett Weldele, who worked on The Surrogates:
And here’s a description of the book they sent, which is written by mystery novelist Gary Phillips and drawn by Sergio Carrera, who did Image’s After the Cape II:
A tale of crime and destiny in the vein of SCARFACE, HIGH ROLLERS spotlights Cameron Quinn, “CQ.” a ruthless enforcer out to make a name for himself, with Phillips shining a harsh light on the action and drama of the L.A. underworld. HIGH ROLLERS is a four-issue miniseries, coming out monthly for fans of violent and penetrating crime stories like THE SOPRANOS and THE WIRE!
Next up, a new title called Station, which is also coming out in June:
Honestly I’m not sure what to make of that last image. Here’s the description from the press release:
A thriller in the vein of WHITEOUT, STATION is the creation of Johanna Stokes, writer of the EUREKA TV episodes “Right as Raynes” and “Purple Haze,” with art by newcomer Leno Carvalho. A 4-issue monthly mini-series beginning this June, STATION explores murder at the extreme edges of the earth.
Bringing a Hitchcockian level of suspense little-seen in the comics medium, STATION puts a new twist on the classic “locked room” murder mystery, focusing on space tourist Dyson as he tries to find out why one of his crewmates is dead, who killed him, and why.

“A tale of crime and destiny in the vein of SCARFACE”
So a pointless comic, with ridiculous overacting, AND a horrible score? SOLD!
Wait, what’s the opposite of that? Yeesh.

Brett Weldele collaborated with Gary Phillips once before, doing covers and interiors for the Phillips-penned Oni Press comic, SHOT CALLERZ. Just FYI.

Nice movie pitch.

I like those traced pages. I can almost recognize Jamie Foxx in the main role.
Anyway nobody is going to buy that book, and Boom won’t care because they’ve already sold the option (but fear not it will never be made in a movie).
Nice covers though.
At least they could have paid Weldele to do the interiors.
