Miller wants to direct Hard Boiled
MTV spoke with The Spirit director Frank Miller at the New York Comic Con this past weekend about the possibility of his graphic novel Hard Boiled finally making it to the big screen:
“We’re talking about [it],” Miller declared to us at NY Comic Con. “I’ve got a really unusual way I want to do it.”
But that’s not all…after co-directing “Sin City” and single-handedly helming the upcoming adaptation of Will Eisner’s “The Spirit,” Miller has decided that the only person he’d want directing a “Hard Boiled” movie is himself.
“I’m in love with directing,” he gushed. “I’ve found a way to expand my career. Comics and directing are really two sides of the same coin. That’s what Robert Rodriguez taught me…good drama is good drama.”
Downey: ‘I’m just a guy who knows he has a lot to be grateful for’
Parade Magazine did a feature this weekend on Robert Downey Jr., mostly about his battle with drugs and alcohol, with some mention of his role in Iron Man:
“Look at this!” Downey exclaims delightedly, picking up a plastic doll of himself in Iron Man armor. “I’ve done something most people thought I’d never do. I’ve become a leading-man superhero in a big action movie!”
Iron Man, co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow, is the latest of Downey’s more than three dozen features. Like the superhero franchises Spider-Man, Batman and Superman, it is expected to be a hugely profitable blockbuster.
“I went after Iron Man because Keanu Reeves got The Matrix, and Johnny Depp got Pirates,” he says. “I’m looking at all these posters of the movies I’ve seen with my son, and I’m thinking, ‘Damn! I could do that!’”
Next time maybe he’ll read the whole script …
Country singer Trace Adkins appeared in the adaptation of the comic Trailer Park of Terror, and was kind of surprised by it when he saw it for the first time at the Nashville Film Festival:
“Goldmann, he wanted me to do this devil-type character,” Trace notes, “and I looked at the [scenes] that he sent me, and I was like, ‘Yeah, man, that’d be fun, and it’ll only take me a day to do it. Sure, I’ll do it.’ And I didn’t read the script. I didn’t know what the movie was about.”
Trace was stunned when he finally saw the film for the first time Thursday night with his wife. The picture features explosions, cannibalism, an amputation and various other forms of physical mutilation. Trace knew it was a horror movie, so that part didn’t surprise him. What did come as a shock was the amount of simulated…er…”lovemaking” onscreen.
The Lightning Round
–Liv Tyler, Gwyneth Paltrow and Maggie Gyllenhaal talk about their respective comic movies coming out this summer.
–Damon Lindelof, Javier Grillo-Marxauch, Ron Moore and Tim Kring, among others, are featured in this article from Fast Company about sci-fi fans who have infiltrated Hollywood.
–Remember the Adult Swim “blind box” figures I mentioned a couple of weeks ago? Well, if you don’t like paying $8 for a surprise figure, Tenacious Toys has unboxed some of them and is selling them on their website. Even Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend.
–Terminator on FOX gets a second season.
–io9 on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which sounds pretty awesome.

“We’re talking about [it],” Miller declared to us at NY Comic Con. “I’ve got a really unusual way I want to do it.”
Miller continued: “My idea is to shoot the film entirely on blue screen with a very dark, basically black color scheme with the occasional splash of red. it’s groundbreaking stuff.”
