The latest MyCup o’ Joe went live on MySpace yesterday, as Joe Quesada shared some of the variant covers for Invincible Iron Man #1 and talked about a few of the announcements that have been and will be made at the New York Comic Con, from Mark Waid writing Spider-Man to something called Marvel Apes:
JM: One last thing before we dive into reader questions, and help a brother out here. Two words, you tell me something about them: “Marvel Apes.”
JQ: Yeaaaaaah. Yeah! [laughs] Marvel Apes! I love it! Well, duh, they’re Marvel characters as apes. I don’t wanna give away too much about it ’cause it’s one of our panel reveals this weekend, but…you know, ironically enough, this came from a fan suggestion at a convention! It was the New York Comic Con two years ago, and a fan asked, “Hey, you’ve done Marvel Zombies. Why not Marvel Apes?” It struck me at the time as such a fun, such a natural idea, that I filed it away. We tracked down that fan and discussed it with him, and where he’s not the one writing it, the idea will find its life.
I remember blogging about Marvel Apes about a year ago. Maybe now they will have their day.

You think they can’t come up with a worse idea and someone always does…

Well, I know that Bob Larkin, who painted the covers for Marvel’s Planet of the Apes magazine, was in touch with Quesada about wanting to be the cover artist if the project goes ahead–even worked up a couple sketches of what Spider-Man (and one other character I can’t remember) would look like as apes.
“Get your paws off me, you damn dirty spider-monkey!”

Mike Wieringo did a whole series of sketches based on this idea. J. Jonah Jameson was my favourite.
Oddly enough, I re-read JLApe - DC’s own attempt at such a stunt - the other day. Bag of shite.
