Mortal Kombat Online reported Midway Games has confirmed last fall’s rumor that a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe video game is in the works.

Today, Midway Games confirmed what had been rumored for a while: the first next-generation Mortal Kombat title, up until now called “Mortal Kombat 8″ by the community, is officially titled Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. As the title suggests, it will be a crossover with the characters and setting of DC Comics.

Lots of unanswered questions remain, such as will the game have the signature fatality moves Mortal Kombat fans have grown to love. Details about its gameplay are still unknown, although a past interview with creator Ed Boon revealed that the next installment of Mortal Kombatwould be more serious.

It’s going to be a fighting game, definitely, but after that anything can go”, he added, talking about the fact that he’s starting from scratch for the new game.

The game will have more features, take advantage of motion-sensing controllers and “try to introduce as many new characters as possible”.

Initially, talk of a Mortal Kombat/DC Universe pairing had comic and gaming fans writing off the possibility as a far-fetch senseless idea but in light of the news from today, expect a new round of speculation of how good or bad it could be.

***UPDATE 3:20 pm***

Games Radar posted this trailer featuring Batman and Sub-Zero having a throwdown. The game will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Thanks James.

  1. GQ Says:

    Kinda random.

And not sure I want to see Sub Zero pulling Wonder Woman’s spine out…

  2. Momar Says:

Hahhahahaha. Does anyone still play Mortal Kombat? The last one sucked.

Good for you DC. Better get it out to get trounced by Marvel’s new Spidey game and new Ultimate Alliance.

  3. LurkerWithout Says:

Why would it seem random or senseless as someone else put in one of those links? Marvel vs. Capcom was a pretty succesful series. Why wouldn’t two other companies attempt the same with another mash-up?

  4. James Says:

C’mon Marvel/Capcom: kiss, make up, and show ‘em how it’s done.

  5. Michael Heide Says:

I don’t care if this game will be as good, better or worse as Marvel vs Capcom.

    I will buy it.

  6. Michael Says:

Sweet Both Marvel and DC coming out with great games

  7. lonewulf Says:

I keep picturing Superman completely no-selling every attack by any opponent.

The only way this game gets even close to working is if it’s only DC villains versus the MK characters

  8. ANARCHcorp Says:

    First Rob Liefeld’s Apocalypse now..this.
Will the stupid ideas never end?

  9. Grant G. Says:

Hmmm… Feels like DC is slumming a bit.

  10. Shaun Patrick Says:

Not only does this sound completely enigmatic but on the other side it seems to be very exciting. I don’t feel like its going to make as big of a splash compared to Street Fighter 4. That game looks beautiful.

Also, this seems like it would have been real awesome 10 years ago.

  11. Xolo Says:

Kind of pointless really. everybody and there mother knows Batman will win before it’s even loaded

  12. Evan Shaner Says:

The game could go either way, but that art is bugging me a little. It seems to be a problem for video games to get Batman’s face right. If you try to look at Bats without his mask on, his eyes would be kinda high up on his face. His chin/mouth are pointed outward and down a little too far.

But I’m just being nitpicky, will be interesting to see how this pans out.

  13. rolando Says:

I hate to use it, but this time it seems warranted:

    Meh.

  14. tridon Says:

I’m just hoping this’ll lead to a Mortal Kombat comic book series from DC. That’d be sweet… especially if they could talk Ed Boon in to writing it.

  15. Chief Jon Says:

Cool. I hope they have the Kreate a Kombatant feature on this one. I have a feeling Darkseid might be winning this tournament.

  16. 0bsessions Says:

Meh. The last good Mortal Kombat game was like fifteen years ago. If DC had gone with Capcom for this, I’d be buying it in a second.

  17. Clayton Kinnelon Greiman Says:

Hope they put Karate Kid from The Legion in there (with his high collar of course). He’d be right at home in the MK arena.

  18. Clayton Kinnelon Greiman Says:

Hope they put Karate Kid from The Legion in there (with his high collar of course). He’d be right at home in the MK arena.

  19. Clayton Kinnelon Greiman Says:

MUST have Karate Kid from The Legion in this one!

  20. Luke Says:

Haha, looks like a lot of fun. Definitely reminds me of the Marvel vs Capcom games. I’ve always thought that the MK universe had a great cast of characters, so hopefully this will turn out well.

  21. m3ntalpati3nt Says:

Woo. Mortal Kombat, huh. That was cool in, what year was it, 1994?

  22. Beheader Says:

    “FINISH HIM!!!”

    Superman: “Um, no.”
    Batman: “I don’t think so.”
Wonder Woman: “Do you know how much crap I took after the last time I killed someone?”

  23. Derek Holtom Says:

I am on this like flies on stink

  24. SportyFork Says:

Can’t wait for one of the MK characters to rip Batman’s spine out, with Batman shrugging it off with a “Been there, done that” attitude… then Batman slices his opponent’s head off with a Batarang.

  25. kombayn Says:

Hell yeah! I hope we can see Superman and Aquaman rip Liu Kang in half!

  26. kombayn Says:

Hell yeah! I hope we can see Superman and Aquaman rip Liu Kang in half!

  27. Vij Says:

I like MK. I like DC characters. But this is just stupid. It just won’t work. The thing that makes MK is the gratuitous violence. And you can’t have Superman in a game with someone getting their spine ripped out. They’ll have to remove the fatalities or only have them in a play mode that you can’t use DC characters. Or as one person noted, only they could only have villians. The pic seems to go against that though.

  28. Dude Says:

Well, this is different. I’m not sure what to think just yet, but the idea is intruiging. I mean, since the idea of the series is to pluck the best fighters from Earth and have then fight the best fighters from Outworld, I suppose it is possible that the Earth they’ve gone to this time is the Earth that’s populated by DC characters. We’ll see.

  29. Brion Says:

    OH MY GOD!
Please have Power Girl in it! With Dead or Alive enhanced boob movement! Hahahahaha

  30. Phil Sandifer Says:

They’ll surely have to take the finishing moves out - no way that DC would let their characters get used in an M-rated game, or would want to deal with the bad press of “violent video game where you rip Superman’s spine out.”

  31. buttler Says:

Whoever thought the “Koming Soon” thing was clever - finish him!

  32. Mundungus Says:

That is something I can get behind. Just as long as it has solid and diverse gameplay abilities.

  33. Siii Says:

    ПИЗДЕЦ!

  34. Jared G Says:

You won’t be able to kill the DC characters. There is no way DC will let Sub-Zero rip Wonder Woman’s head off or let Superman melt Sonya’s face. MK, like it or not, for good or bad, is defined by two words: finish him. Without fatalities, MK is not MK. Even if the gameplay is superb, without fatalities, it just isn’t MK.

  35. zombie-kid Says:

this would have been a much better idea for wildstorm characters rather than dcu. midnighter would be right at home ripping off someone’s arms and beating them to death with the bloody ends.

  36. Gordon Says:

@Beheader: I literally, actually, honest-to-God laughed out loud at that. Nice one.

Your comment was in line with what I was thinking — this just seems like a weird match-up; I can’t picture any major DC heroes having any sort of Fatality move… (Maybe Lobo, the Spectre, or Guy Gardner, though.)

    Odd. But hey, whatever.

  37. Ike Carr Says:

It would be neat if they put the Peter David version of Aquaman in this. Have the King of Atlantis impale someone across the arena with with harpoon, and yell, “Get over here !” as he is yanking them towards him.

  38. Matthew Smith Says:

The only way this works is if they focus on the more street level DC characters. I could see most of the Bat family, the Green Arrow characters, the Question, or maybe some of the Outsiders. But if they include folks like Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, of Flash, its just not going to work. There’s no way people like Liu Kang could go toe to toe with those types of powerhouses.

  39. Mek Says:

    Where’s the rape-and/or-mindwipe fatality?

… Hey, SOMEONE had to say it.

  40. Rod Says:

    But will it sell?

  41. Dalarsco Says:

This could work. If they stick to the more hardcore DC heroes and any villains they want then they won’t have to neuter Mortal Kombat. But to put in DC’s big guns would either require them to act completely out of character or remove the ultraviolence that makes MK what it is. The essense of one would have to be compromised. Of course, if they make the villain of the game someone like Maxwell Lord who s mind controlling DC heroes and whipping them into a killing frenzy I could see it working. But if anything Wildstorm would make so much more sense.

  42. Dalarsco Says:

Oh, and I forgot to mention that Marvel vs. Capcom worked because they both have similar violence levels. MK is too gruesome to pair up with mainstream super heroes.

  43. Pete Says:

I hope they include Darkseid, Doomsday, and Black Adam.

I know it soudns crazy, but so did Marvel vs. Capcom when I first heard about it. Zangief vs. The Hulk? How is that going to work?

I’ll wait for reviews of the game before I comit to buying or not.

  44. Jomma Says:

Marvel vs. Capcom is friggin OVERATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There I said it. Bite me Marvel fanboys.

  45. Mega Gear X Says:

If Lui Kang, Sub-Zero and Scorpion can fight gods like Fujin, Raiden and Shinnok, then non-gods like Superman and Wonder Woman should be easy.

  46. Icelator Says:

Marvel VS CapCom was total crap, I punch him and then wait five minutes for the combo to end, I punch him and wait ten minutes for his combo to end, lather, rinse, repeat. I want to play a Fighting Game.

  47. Scavenger Says:

“but in light of the news from today, expect a new round of speculation of how good or bad it could be.”

On a Newsarama blog forum? Someone’s expecting speculation of goodness?

  48. chrishaley Says:

It definitely seems like the Capcom characters would have been a better fit for DC’s universe, but I guess that’s not how business deals are done.

  49. ArmandoB Says:

kinda wish it was MK vs Topcow

  50. Kane Says:

I see this manifesting as Darkseid sponsoring the fights but the actual storyline will be less violent with the fatalities and such being unlockable later.

I would love to see more DCU martial artists like Connor Hawke (snap–brain dead!), Batgirl (good or bad this month?) or Richard Dragon (”Chuck Dixon ruined me with a bad series”)…wait, no, maybe not.

But a Vic Sage Question that disappears in smoke would fit this game well.

  51. gazoo Says:

Wicked, can’t wait, PS3 you got another baby coming home!

  52. KingMattress Says:

Being a Marvel zombie, admitted DC hater, and enormous Mortal Kombat fan, nothing will give me more pleasure than literally killing these characters in disgustingly brutal ways.

  53. Pyramid Says:

It’s about time there’s a DC fighting game but against MK? Then again seeing Darkseid take on Sub Zero would be pretty sweet.

  54. xoasmaggot Says:

Mileena,Frost, crap any of the females in the MK universe could mop the floor with the DC charaters, this game is piontless.

  55. GRIZZAM 512 Says:

    Huh…

  56. Karmix Says:

This sounds like a glorified MUGEN rip-off.
Could be fun, but I don’t know how Ed Boons says it is going to be ” serious”. Who can take somethung like this seriously?

  57. CHINO35 Says:

ii mean maybe iif superman hadd sum red kriptonite lolz, but other den dat..hez tOo much of a boy scout ta rip sum onez head off

  58. Alexiel Says:

They should have done it with Street Fighter or any other fighting game, I have a very hard time picturing Superman ripping people’s heads off or Batman stabbing them to death, or Wonder Woman breaking their ne….Ok I can picture Wonder Woman in that game but still…. Mortal Kombat is an awesome game but not really an environment for a DC game.

That said I’ll still play it but it’s going to be weird.

  59. AdamYJ Says:

I can’t help but associate MK with the ’90s, 16-bit era of video gaming. So, when I think of DC characters to fight MK fighters, my mind instantly turns to the ones from the ’90s.

    Kyle Rayner
    Connor Hawke
    Jared Stevens as Fate
    Long-haired Superman
    harpoon-handed Aquaman

The video games and comics of that specific era are just too closely tied together in my mind.

  60. Sam Robards Says:

Well, this seems like a huge waste of time and money on everyone’s part.

On MK’s side, all the games after the MKII, which was great, sucked. Why they keep making them is beyond me because they don’t attract anywhere near the attention (maybe the revenue?) they did in the mid-90s. Unlike Street Fighter, which actually made gameplay improvements throughout its development (and no, animalities/babalities/friendships WEREN’T improvements), MK has always been about fatalities. That’s why it got popular in the first place. They didn’t play that well and looked marginal at best (the MKI sprites make my eyes wanna barf), so why play it? Because you could kill the other guy. I heard some of the more recent ones were ok, but the series just doesn’t have any kind of pull anymore, unlike Capcom’s franchises. So let’s face it: Capcom > Midway

DC just has a history of going to low-quality game producers in an effort to get their characters into video games (usually to try and respond to Marvel since they did it first). Remember Justice League Task Force? A sucky response to X-Men:Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes. Justice League Heroes? A sucky response to X-Men Legends/Ultimate Alliance. Superman Returns? A sucky alternative to Spider-Man 2 or Incredible Hulk:Ultimate Destruction. This project is clearly meant to respond to the Marvel vs. Capcom games; however, they’re 10 years too late.

What we want is for Marvel and Capcom to make up, go to DC and say, “We wanna make Marvel vs. DC. Interested?” Hell, they could even throw the Capcom characters in there too. Sure, the amount of fighters might be in the hundreds, but Tobal No. 2 had 200 fighters, and that game was made by (then) Squaresoft.

As for this game, unless it gets stellar reviews, it’s just more proof DC is behind the curve when it comes to digital entertainment.

    *End Sermon*

  61. ron clagh Says:

Read on joystiq that there will be no blood and no fatalities. So it would suck.

Imagine, if you could rip the spine out of J@$0nSt0rm. Well, a guy can dream!

  62. Kent Horton Says:

This will be the greatest game ever. I am so buying it.

  63. wilt Says:

Does this mean the MK universe is part of the multiverse now? Could this be the final crisis?

  64. Barbossa Says:

Scorpion ripping Batman in two? Count me in.

  65. Cray_ws Says:

I’d rather it just be a DCU free for all, and only include MK characters as cheats or “easter egg” to the game. DCU has thousands of characters, there’s no way they are going satisfy everyone.

I think this game is 12 years too late. I don’t understand why DCU didn’t partner up with some the newer fighting games out there. Something along the lines of Virtual Fighter or Tekken which uses 3D realm.

  66. Lawrence Says:

Mortal Kombat hasn’t been big since it went 3d. If DC really wanted to try to make a game that got people’s attention they’d have Wonder Woman as an unlockable character in DOA and try to get Batman in Tekken! Now THAT would be huge.

  67. Zenstrive Says:

That Batman is Jason Todd, and the Earth is Earth-15 remade after Superman-Prime destroyed it. To make things safer, there are more furious warriors born there.

  68. jarell Says:

if dc puts spawn in the game it going to be bad ass i cant imagine spawn been in soul calbure before

  69. ElCoyote Says:

This totally makes sense, I mean, we’ve had a teenager eaten by lizard monsters for three pages in 52, Mr. Mind turned into a Lovecraftian monster when a little evil worm is as creepy as one can get, and all manner of death and dismemberment in the DCU since DiDio took over.

  70. jedimastercap Says:

If there are no fatalities as the rumor says then it is NOT MORTAL KOMBAT!

  71. Ortiz Says:

You think it will have a rape fatality? Just kidding… or maybe not. Anyway, I don’t think it’s a good idea, cannot imagine Superman killing someone with his heat vision. I’m gonna wait for it, but I ain’t trilled. Peace.

  72. Marianne Cox Wallor Roberts Raleigh Says:

Unless the PS3 suddenly starts selling like hotcakes and theres a price drop, there is no way in hell I’m playing this game.

People talk about comics and the “events” problem. Well, the video games industry these days is simply pathetic with Microsoft console that can’t even turn on and Gamecube 1.5 being popular for some odd reason.

  73. Byron Dunn Says:

This is the dumbest, most ridiculous, most disgusting and offensive idea ever.

I’m buying a copy and I don’t even have the systems I need to play it. God bless inane corporate Synergy.

(But, seriously, if they choose the right characters and leave out Superman and the other goodie-goodie characters then they might have something here.)

  74. Josh Says:

I think the difference between this and Marvel VS Capcom is that Capcom’s characters lent themselves to over the top superhero-style battles than the Mortal Kombat characters do. They seemed to have something in common with the Marvel characters from the get go, so it only made sense that a company that had a pretty good track record with adapting those characters for a fighting game would do a mash-up with it’s biggest franchises. This just came completely out of left field from a company that has a sketchy track record at best when it comes to adaptations of anything, and doesn’t seem to have much of anything in common with DC. I mean really—Mortal Kombat’s claim to fame is not good gameplay—it’s gimmicky killing moves at the end of fights. How many DC heroes are they going to be able to scrounce up that would fit with this? And let’s not all kiss Marvel’s rear either—they allowed Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects to rear it’s ugly head not too long ago. I’m afraid that’s what this will end up like.

  75. Blessrok Says:

Uhhh there won’t be ANY Fatalities. Newsarama needs to update again cause Gamepro.com is already on it w/the story.

  76. Visucius Says:

First off, I work for Midway. In my opinion, an “elseworld” of “outworld” promises some pretty cool matches between the best of the two universes.

Doing DC justice required a hard reset. The official site provides a glimpse of gameplay - http://worldscollide.com

With Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti crafting story to complement the dark, gritty next-gen graphics of the engine, I think the match-up will reinvent what gamers can expect from a fighter.

  77. AcidicPear Says:

whats next a Chuck Norris vs Arnold Schwarzenegger Game?

  78. Jack be nimble Says:

there making it rated Teen so we wont see any Fatalities with gore, they will have finishing moves, Personally I think its a crappy Idea They coulda thought about something else? I have one why not create a male or female ( for story or konquest) make them follow path of evil or good, create YOUR OWN FAT. and powers. you know wow look at all these Ideas they coulda came up with but no they went to RATED T area now we gotta see S.Man Lose Bye Sub zeros Ice Kriptonight

  79. David Isaac Little Says:

    no coment

  80. Drew Says:

Thanks ED…. I thought you gave up on us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  81. Drew Says:

What in the hell is gonna be the story line for this thing though? Side note: 4 the record..Ive always thought that Raiden’s power was dulled down for the game. Who in the MK universe can take Supes,WW,GL,or the Martian? Im a Sub/zero fan til the death but if you take those JLA’s out, who could take Raiden and Scorpion? It all comes down to what they decide for the storyline, they never said Justice League just DC, so its quite a few ways they could go with this. Hell, create a matchup with this big of a power gap? Why not make an MK vs Street Fighter? It would sell more copies. Eventhough this idea is ten years past due, its what people have really been waiting to see!

  82. Drew Says:

Holy Crap!!!!! How DID I miss that comment right above mine??? Rated T!!!??? What the hell?? Ed Boon whats wrong with you man?? Dont get me wrong I REALLY like the JLA and most of DC, but those of us loyal to the MK universe have standards!!!! I mean its bad enough that MKA had generic fatalities for all kombatants, but Rated T fatalities??!!? We’ve been waiting a long time for something like this and they take away the ass ripping?? C’mon man gas is $3.50, we dont need that!!

  83. Sammy Says:

this game will not match because Dc and Mk are two differnent stories and genres. Mk is all about the blood, guts and gore as to Dc is about justice, crimes capes and spandex. although, we may not know entirely what suprises Mk has in stored.

  84. Sammy Says:

also, Ed Boon will probably eliminate the gibberish each Mk character yells when they attack because it wouldnt match the DC characters, only thing that would make this Mk game dope, is if theres realistic blood, intenses graphics, realistic scenery that can be destroyed and more weapons, moves, combos, attacks, characters, and a tag team battle. I for one, doubt that this game would be a hit especially that the two games have characters that hane completely different costumes. This game is disgraceful and non tasteful and buying it would be wasteful. This is the WORST idea ive ever heard sinse Dynasty Worriors Gundam!!!

  85. Sammy Says:

and by hane i meant have.

  86. Drew Says:

Honestly, I think this brings the overall quality of MK down. The only thing I think that could really turn this thing around is if they give all new powers to everyone including the ones they already have.

  87. Drew Says:

I dont care what they say… No Fatalities= No Mortal Kombat!…Period! It mind as well be a DC game, or either this… Boon should do it like MK1 and make a blood code or something… Do they still make cheat codes for games?

  88. bagheera Says:

HaHa… Aquaman vs. Meat. Kabal vs. Flash. Liu kang vs. Karate Kid. Wonder Woman vs. Sonya. Onaga vs. Darksied. Maybe DC should of went with DBZ. I’ll buy this one just to see how they thought they could pull this off. MK can’t do a vs. fighter. nothing else fits into thier mythologies.

When are we going to see Marvel vs. DC? Come on people! How long must money sit in front of your face before you take it?

  89. Brandon Says:

a have a kouple of questions about this game. Like for 1 is thier still gonna be a kreate a kharacter mode, 2 are they going to down the violence just because there is a whole new audience that they need to open up to that has a lot more younger fans than the MK series. 3 I heard a rumor, and i mean RUMOR that there was going 2 be a kreate a stage mode in it, is this true. 4, will the DC kharacters have fatalities as well because if so i cannot wait to see The Hulk just rip Johnny Cage’s smart ass in half vertically. 5 are there going to be weapon kombat in this because Super Man, The Hulk, Green Lantern, etc dont have weapons so they’re gonna have 2 do something about that. 6, will there be stage fatalities cuz ive always been partial 2 those. and lastly WTF is gonna be the story line for this becuz it says at the top that Boon said the next MK game is going to be more serious well’p if he is looking for serious this was possibly the worst way 2 go. Seriously, this is gonna be a funny-ass game when it comes out. I know this is a lot 2 ask for but ime a huge mk fan as well as a comic geek so this is HUGE 2 me.

    -Brandon

  90. Jordan Says:

To all those idiots who keep spouting Diarrea of the mouth, about how “MK characters can kill any DC character hands down”, clearly you do not know the first thing about DC’s characters. Superman has the strength of a god, and is followed (Potentially even TRUMPED) by Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter. Sindel vs. Wonder woman???? Wonder Woman had to HOLD BACK her powers when fighting superman just to avoid KILLING him when he was hitting her with everything he had. And you are going to try to convince me that Sub-zero, Scorpion, or even RAIDEN, could take her down??? You people need to get your facts straight. Another thing, for those of you who keep saying “Man, MK is going to have to tone down their fatalities”….well, keep it on the record that MK is not the only one having to change some things for this game to happen. DC has had to tone down their nearly god-like characters, to make it a bit more plausible that they are fighting characters with human strength, and being beaten.

I love MK, and i love DC, but you people need to pull ur heads out of your asses before spouting “facts” that are actually more like opinions.

Another thing, those that only bought the game for fatalities (and you make yourself well known, by your obsessing over there being no fatalities) , well, u are the people that i mopped the floor with in the arcades with the games in this franchise. LOL You asshats that were only worried about a fatality, when i was busy learning the combos, and the game-play. MK is more than a set of fatalities. It’s a GREAT storyline. It’s graphic, great story-telling, and most of all, THEY WERE FUN. I think you people are missing the most important aspect of this.

    FUN.

  91. John Says:

Motal K will kick the fukn shit out of Dc I mean some of the motal K characters are immortal
