Maleev Shows You How To Do It.

Want to see how Alex Maleev works his magic? On the Bendis Board, he takes a cover from pencils to finished painterly genius. It’s a really nice cover, and process wonks like me will love it.

I don’t get why this is “magic.” The step that he left out is the actual creation of the drawing, which is obviously just a trace from a photograph. Not actually “magic.”

Considering the amount of photos that Maleev uses in his work, for tracing figures, background images, etc., I find his stuff incredibly dull and lifeless.

    “Magic,” it is not.

He left out the final step – having David Mack appropriate your work and not give you any credit!

I like the simple pencil drawing best, reminds me of some of Mckean’s stuff (Cages).

Once in awhile Maleev will use a style I’m not huge on (the boring but appropriate style for that Illuminati one shot) but for the most part I really dig his stuff (his recent Nova covers have been a bit different from his other work but equally amazing).

All the so called famous classical artists did it with a camera obscura…if Maleev is taking the photos himself, he’s still choosing composition, etc…seeing how it all comes together in his mind before its made, yeah thats magic and just as artistically solid as anyone else. (now if he’s copying these from a magazine that’s a whole ‘nother story)
