Chip Kidd continues to bring the awesome

Behold the covers for Volumes One and Two of Osamu Tezuka’s seminal rogue doctor series Black Jack, as designed by Mr. Kidd hisself.

This was scanned from Vertical’s new fall catalog, which I received in the mail yesterday. Vertical also sent me the first volume of Tezuka’s Dororo, which should be in stores soon. Let me just say that if more Western comic artists tried to take a page from Tezuka’s notebook, the world would be a better place.

I disagree. I think Chip Kidd is getting too into himself, and forgetting that job number one of the jacket designer is to sell the book, and when I can’t see what the title it for a decent distance, than I feel the design is a failure. I can barely make out the title on this.

I think Mr. Kidd needs to be reined in a bit. I mean, have you seen the Batman: Year One cover where he cut off half the name of the book?
