Numerous production shots from Will Eisner’s The Spirit have been leaked online in the past week or so, and in most cases pulled at the request of Lionsgate. But now IGN.com has the first two official stills from the Frank Miller production: Scarlett Johansson as Silk N. Floss, and Samuel L. Jackson as The Octopus.
The Spirit opens Jan. 16, 2009.

Clearly, the mystique of the unseen Octopus will be gone from the film. Not surprising, but also not something that makes me think Miller paid attention to the original material as closely as we would hope. It’s a lot less interesting to have just another Samuel L. Jackson bad guy. (Not that he’s not supercool and a great actor, but he tends to typecast.)
I also seem to recall that people would sometimes think that the Octopus is the Spirit. That could still be done with slight of hand, but it seems a little harder to believe now.

Aww, nuts. Why don’t they show the Spirit already ? He’s a guy with a hat and a mask. Not like the costume is gonna be some big reveal or something. Instead they show the guy who’s supposed to be mysterious first.
