Vixen, by Joshua Middleton

Joshua Middleton continues his series of covers starring DC Comics heroines with this one, featuring Vixen. He doesn’t say which series it’s for, but I presume Justice League of America … unless DC is going to surprise everyone with a Vixen miniseries.

Not that I need an excuse to post this — I’m a fan of Middleton’s work — but this illustration may be particularly relevant given recent discussions about the character’s depiction.

The big difference between this and past examples ones is that Josh Middleton can draw and color unlike other people.

  2. ElCoyote Says:

Anyway, izzat Halle Berry(a shade or two darker)?

    Looks kinda like Halle Berry.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

In fact, it’s the opposite of wrong.

  3. Kev Says:

DC need to get Josh on another series, just having him do covers is cruel.

  4. Luke Says:

I think the nipples are a bit unnecessary. Other than that it’s a pretty good cover — the pose fits her, the figurework looks nice, and the foreground works nicely with the figures and the background.

  5. Shaun Says:

Nice art! And hey, at least Vixen’s the right color in this drawing. :-) That’s a big step right there.

  6. mario boon Says:

you know Luke, women tend to have nipples and they tend to show a bit through a tightly fit shirt. Even more if the woman isn’t wearing a bra. :)

  7. Ken B. Says:

So, are covers all Middleton can draw? He’s almost as big a waste to DC as the Kuberts have been.

I like his work and all, but let’s see some interior work that doesn’t require a complete disregard of a schedule.

  8. Luke Says:

Yes, Mario, they do. But it is not required to render them in a drawing.

Oh, please, with the crappy artists DC will force on people to meet a deadline I’d rather see 22 pages a year from a guy like Middleton than one more fugly issue of 52 or Countdown.

And don’t even get me started on how they completely screwed up Infinite Crisis by not giving Phil Jimenez enough lead time, they KNEW he was slow, they couldn’t hold off a couple extra months and we got half issues of Ivan freakin’ Reis.

Same thing goes for the way they chopped up Busiek and Pacheco’s run on Superman. DC’s become obsessed with being on time, even if it means putting out mediocre product.

  10. UberShep Says:

Joshua Middleton has no more plans to do do interior artwork for the DCU. He has no qualms about doing covers, but he can’t stand drawing superheroes for more than the equivalent of one page, and he gets paid A LOT more to produce many covers instead of many pages.

  11. roger rabbit Says:

that is halle barry from that james bond movie with the ice hotel

  12. Adam D. Kline Says:

Ah yes, Luke is going to take it upon himself to save us from our heathen, godless selves. Onward, Christian soliders…!

(Nipples are so unnecessary. Let’s have them removed!)
