Unfortunately my three years of high school Spanish left me ill-prepared to read this interview with Northwind and upcoming Spider-Man artist Alex Cal … but I don’t need Babelfish to see the artwork, featuring Cal’s upcoming work on Spider-Man with J.M. DeMatteis:

That’s the nicest Spider-Man art I’ve seen in years.
What book is this for? DeMatties isn’t on Amazing right?

So… DeMatteis is coming back to work on Spidey? Damn. I loved his Spider-Man.
If anything could’ve gotten me to end my personal embargo on buying BND Spider-Man this would’ve been it. But I’m still going to pass. DeMatteis is one of those great writers who proved that a married Spider-Man did indeed work. I wonder how he feels that his entire run with Spidey — including the beloved Kraven’s Last Hunt — has been invalidated?
I gotta say, this is some great artwork too. I wish I could bring myself to buy this, but I just can’t under the current editorial mandate.

Love the Ditko influence on Spidey’s mask.

Notice how someone can draw a character’s backside facing the “camera” as is appropriate for the action and the shot, without undue emphasis? This is lost on many contemporary pencillers.
This is pretty good pencilling overall.

That… all of my… are.
All of them. They are.
I will need many towels and some disinfectant.

Yeah, it’s too bad. It’s seems to much of us like Spider-man’s dead. He’s been replaced with a totally irrelvant character. Who wants to read the adventures of the cowardly idiot?
