Very sad news from Mark Evanier, who’s had to announce way too much of this lately:
One of the most prolific artists to ever draw comic books, Jim Mooney, passed away in Florida on Sunday. He was born in 1919 and had been in failing health for some time, especially since the passing of his wife Anne in 2005.
Mooney was one of the greats. He’ll be missed.

That is sad. Mooney worked on a lot of neat college/postgrad-era Spider-Man stories, back in the ’80′s – including a faboo Doc Ock/Black Cat arc in Spectacular Spider-Man.

Jim Mooney was a true gentleman, and someone who left a mark on comics in six different decades. Although he’s best known for Supergirl, he probably worked on more pages of Spider-Man once he left DC, and even after he retired, he added to his already impressive page count with a run on the Superboy comic which was based on the live action TV series. In the ’90s he was a regular contributor to Claypool Comics, both on Elvira and Soulsearchers & Company, the latter of which was written by Peter David and pencilled by Dave Cockrum before Mooney added his inks. Anyone who’s seen his commission artwork knows that he could still draw exceedingly well even up ’till recently, and that’s quite the accomplishment. He was a true professional in every sense, and one which today’s artists could learn much from.

It is always sad when one of the all time greats passes away, and make no mistake about it based on his body of work Jim Mooney was one of the greats, and one of the Marvel work horses of the seventies. He could do it all, pencil and ink his own work and ink other artist’s work, also his pencilos stood out when inked by people with styles much different than his own. When you stop and think of all the different characters he lent his talent to,all the different “eras” he worked through, you wonder if any of the “young artist” working today could possibly have the staying power of this man.

I’ve been loving his work on Ms. Marvel, which I’m reading the Essential of right now. Clean, dynamic storytelling. It’s wild to think he was pushing 60 when he was doing that work.

Wow – surprised this isn’t a Newsarama feature.
A great artist from a different time (altho if the stories of how he drew Supergirl are true, maybe he’s an artist for the ages (wink wink nudge nudge).

We lost another great artist. My feelings to his family.
Rest in peace, Jim. I will always love all your Spider-Man´s Marvel Team-Up stories.

Rest in peace Jim. A highlight of a trip to my first Minnesota FallCon was getting to spend time chatting with you. You were a true class act.

RIP Jim, some of my favorite Spidey comics were written by you, thanks for all your hard work!

Sad news. Mooney was one of the mainstays at Marvel during my youth. His run as inker/finisher over Keith Pollard’s pencils on Spider-Man was one of my favorites.

this man gave me as a kid more heroes…and more busted-up telephones that my parents could deal with…with his incredible “dial h for hero” series, back in the day. and although he didn’t know what it meant either, a final “sockamagee” to you, dear sir!

This should be a main article, not a blogspot. More evidence that the focus strays form comics far too much.

Very sad news. Jim Mooney was one of the greats. I bought a Spider-Man page from him once and was so excited to get a personal e-mail from him and a beautiful work of art in the mail. He will be missed.

I am very sorry to hear about Jim’s death. He was a very nice man and one of my favorite artists. I was lucky to commission both Foolkiller and Legion of SuperPets drawings from him in recent years.
Jim created Streaky the Supercat, another favorite of mine.
