Somehow, Richie Rich gets a free pass

March 28th, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

Just as I was beginning to forget adaptations like Brenda Starr and Sheena, EW.com breaks down its list of the “20 Worst Comic-Book Movies Ever.”

Nic “Not the Bees!” Cage should take heart: While he appears just once on the list, for Ghost Rider, Jennifer Garner pulls double duty with Daredevil and Elektra.

Daredevil’s not really THAT bad. In fact, the director’s cut is actually kind of cool. I don’t think it deserved a spot on the list, at least not when there’s more deserving crap like TMNT 3, Hulk, and Superman III out there– not to mention the complete slap to the face that is X3.

They are kind of un-necessarily harsh on Fantastic Four, too. That is a completely acceptable superhero fantasy movie that didn’t hurt anybody. In a world where we have been force-fed garbage like Spawn, I’ll take it.

  2. Richard J. Marcej Says:

Wait, they list the Shadow and the first FF film but don’t list dreck like Spawn, Superman 3 and Batman 3?

  3. Shaun Says:

Really, I’d like to know why Superman Returns gets a free pass. It got generally good reviews according to Rotten Tomatoes (though it should be noted that many of those “good” reviews still have plenty of criticisms and/or faint praise), but viewer opinions — whether fanboys or average moveigoers — were pretty negative.

I guess just about everything on the EW list truly was worse than SR, though I’d honestly rather watch Daredevil (at least the Director’s Cut). I’d also add Spider-Man 3, Supes 3, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Ang Lee’s Hulk to the list.

Oh, and I’d also add the JLA 90210 movie before it’s even made. :-)

  4. Scott William Foley Says:

Daredevil had some goofy moments, but overall I actually enjoyed it. Same goes for the Punisher (with Tom Jane). Now the Punisher with Dolph Lundgren, there was a stinker.

Same goes for both of the Fantastic Four movies and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I always assume the movie can’t capture the spirit and nuance of the comic book (and, in most cases, years of character development), so I take them for what they are–film adaptations.

I’ll admit it, though, Batman IV and Ghost Rider were pretty awful.

  5. The Ugly American Says:

They better have listed SMASH EVIL.

  6. The Ugly American Says:

OK, they did. Punisher was not as bad as some other movies. And I had no idea Barbarella was a comic movie.

  7. Matt D Says:

pah! The Phantom’s a really fun movie.

  8. Michael Hoskin Says:

The Shadow? It was actually decent!

Unlike…Timecop, Hulk or Virus (which are missing from the list)

  9. Shaun Says:

I remember seeing The Shadow and thinking, while it wasn’t great, that it had its moments. Another pass at the script might’ve done the trick.

And I definitely felt (at the time) that Alec Baldwin would’ve been a great Batman/Bruce Wayne. Far better than Keaton or Kilmer (or Clooney, who should’ve been a good one but wasn’t).

  10. Jason M. Bryant Says:

I actually agreed with them on The Shadow. It had a lot of elements that seemed like they should have been cool, but I just couldn’t buy it. Something about the world didn’t gel together properly.

  11. Billy Ray Says:

I think we can all agree that a truly COMPREHENSIVE list of bad comic-to-film adaptions would be much, much longer than 20 films…

  12. Simon DelMonte Says:

Add me to the list of people who liked The Shadow. It bears no resemblance whatsoever to the original, but I liked it, and I think that Baldwin has somehow become an underrated actor.

Not sure why Barbarella is on this list? Is it based on a French comic I never heard of? Because otherwise it’s not bad superheroics, it’s bad SF.

And diss Steel the film, but leave the comic book John Henry Irons alone. He was and is a great character who deserves a lot better than this film. Though I still say that Lakers fans owe their team’s titles to the failure of this movie, which probably helped to get Shaq put aside his acting career in favor of concentrating that much more on b-ball.

  13. Shaun Says:

Baldwin’s made quite the comeback with 30 Rock, actually. I can’t stand to watch Tracy Morgan’s character, so I rarely watch it, but Baldwin’s hilarious.

His parenting skills, however, are highly questionable. :-)

  14. Frank L Says:

There is no way that Fantastic Four, LEG or the New Punisher were worse then either The Captain America Movie, The original Punisher or the Nick Fury move with the Hof.

And Barbarella was a comic book?

  15. Shaun Says:

I’d forgotten about the 80′s (or early 90′s?) Cap movie… Both that, and the first Punisher, were straight to video weren’t they? That might be why they weren’t included. But yeah, those should probably be on the list too.

Someone needs to explain to me how a naked Jane Fonda — back then — could be possibly be “bad.” As noted, both Sheena and Swamp Thing are least noteworthy for hot women doing a topless scene.

  16. Joseph Says:

That list is ridiculous. No way FF, Daredevil, and The Punisher belong with the rest of the dreck on that list. Just the fact they have Elektra tied with Daredevil makes the list lose all credibility.

  17. Evan Waters Says:

THE SHADOW wasn’t bad, and I disagree somewhat with the stereotyping charge- as I remember it, at least, the villain was decently developed as a character. And there are some genuinely cool setpieces in the film overall, plus a nice tone. It’s been a while since I watched it (the lack of a widescreen DVD is part of that- I don’t mean anamorphic, even, I mean letterboxed.)

  18. Dave Says:

“Not sure why Barbarella is on this list? Is it based on a French comic I never heard of?”
You know there’s this awesome, obscure website called “Google” that can help you find answers for questions like this. I don’t blame you for not knowing about it, it’s a pretty well-kept secret even among experienced internet users.

  19. Shaun Says:

There’s wikipedia too, but I’m too lazy to look it up. Heck, I’ve barely done any work at my job today…

  20. john Says:

And this list shows why I never read what a reviewer has to say. Their taste and mine are always way off.

  21. Craig Says:

The thought the Thomas Jane Punisher was worse than the Dolph Lundgren one? Idiots.

I also enjoyed The Phantom & The Shadow.

One last thing, where were the two 1970s Captain America flicks? At least the late 80s/early 90s one had him looking like Cap instead of throwing around a see-through shield.

  22. Shaun Says:

Those 1970′s Cap flicks (was there more than one?) were made for TV… Just as there was a Dr. Strange made for TV movie. Those aren’t being counted here… I’m sure it’s just theatrical flicks.

That’s probably why the more recent (also awful) Cap movie and the Dolph Lundgren Punisher probably aren’t on there. Those were straight to video movies, though they’ve been, subsequently, shown on TV as well. Not often, because they suck, but they pop up now and then.

  23. GQ Says:

Worra lorra crap. Poorly thought out list that forgets it’s purpose half-way through. At no point does the Supergirl reviewer explain why he thinks the movie is bad and while STEEL the movie sucked, John Henry Irons is a great character.
And, of course, they utterly failed to mentioned the main reason why Judge Dredd was so awful – he takes his damn helmet off in the first ten minutes!

I must know where you got your layout from im trying to start my own blog and yours is the coolest.
