Nothing terribly exciting, though I’m hoping the movie will be good. The thing is, it’s been so long since the show has been on AND EVEN LONGER since I’ve watched an episode of X-Files (Except for the final episode, and I’d bet that’s true for a lot of people) it’s kind of hard to muster up a lot of enthusiasm for this.

Is this going to pick up where the last episode ended? I barely remember anything about how it ended, aside from Mulder & Scully no longer FBI agents and on the run (Why? No idea anymore)… That, and Cancer Man thinking he was Timothy Leary and apparently getting firebombed in a cave (Again, why? By whom? No clue).

I’m hoping this will be a solid, entertaining stand-alone story, but this is gonna be really hard to pull off methinks.

Even harder: Getting people interested in X-Files so many years after it limped to its finish, especially with The Dark Knight, Indy, and Iron Man out there. At least Indy and Iron Man will have been out for a couple of months by that point.

It’s a non-mytharc standalone, Carter insists, yet the trailers feature a lot of gooey stuff surrounding some characters’ eyes.

  3. Joe S. Walker Says:

The thing about The X-Files is that its basic premise was a quest, or rather a double quest: would Mulder find proof of ETs? and would Scully come to accept that the paranormal existed? It was a very good set-up for a series, but not for long: before the end of season 2 the show was going round in circles. And no, I can’t see much of an eager audience for another film in 2008.

    Grouse, gripe, complain, discourage interest.
Don’t know why anyone would see this.
Don’t know why we make movies anymore at all.
    Why get out of bed?

  5. Shaun Says:

Umm… Anything of substance to add here, Julius?

Sure, I’m not particularly eager about this movie. Only five posts (counting this one) have happened here, and they haven’t been particularly enthusiatic psots, says a lot. Hardly scientific, but few seem to be talking up this movie the same way people are talking up Dark Knight, Indy, and Iron Man.

I’m still going to see this one… I started watching X-Files near the end of its first season, and I was a huge fan for the next five seasons or so. After that I began to lose interest in the show as (like Joe said) the show stared spinning its wheels and it became clear Chris Carter was really just making it up as he went along. The show was collapsing under its own weight, it ceased to be fun, and the ratings dropped like a rock. THEN Duchovny left.

So here we are, years later. Will there be a lot of interest in this movie? Hard to say… I’m thinking about renting the final season of X-Files, in the hopes it’ll mostly make sense, refresh my memory of the final episode, and (hopefully) be able to make sense of the movie.

I’m not trying to be negative about this movie’s chances. I just think this movie has its work cut for it. The first X-Files movie only did about $80 million domestically, and that’s while the show was at the peak of its popularity. Hard to say how this one will perform.

    Shadows don’t work that way.

Half-way interested to see what this story is going to be about.
