‘The Marvel universe will not be the same’

March 26th, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

From "Secret Invasion" #1

Entertainment Weekly has the first look at Marvel’s Secret Invasion #1, and talks with writer Brian Michael Bendis about what the event holds for the publisher’s superhero universe:

So how does Secret Invasion end?
The Marvel universe will not be the same.

That’s what everyone says about an event comic!
Well, we’ve proven over time that House of M, Civil War, Secret War — none of these did leave the universe the way it was. The criticism going into Civil War is that it’s going to be a draw: Captain America’s dead and Tony Stark is running the world. That wasn’t the way it was when we started. These are big things for the characters. So on that note, we can only stand by our track record. But that’s why you buy the book. The Avengers teams will be dramatically shifted. There will be a huge upset of power in the Marvel universe. Huge.

Secret Invasion #1 goes on sale April 2.

The Marvel universe will not be the same…Well, it will be the same in the bigger sense that it will be the same will-not-be-the-same event as we foisted on you all last year. But it will be a very different not-the-sameness. The same as in it’s different of course because we acheive our not-the-sameness in different ways but definitely different. In a same sort of way.

    See?

  2. Shaun Says:

Thanks, Dawn… It’s all clear to me now. Clear as mud. :-)

Actually, that was beautifully stated and I couldn’t possibly improve upon it. Well played!

  3. Shaun Says:

Just read the EW preview… When did Dugan start talking like a hillbilly? “All y’all”?

That seals it. Dugan’s a Skrull. Or Bendis just sucks. Take your pick.

  4. Rich Says:

Shaun, did you read the Secret Invasion prologue at Marvel.com? You’re on to something…

  5. Shaun Says:

About Dugan being a Skrull, or Bendis sucking? :-)

Seriously, no, I haven’t read the prologue… I guess I’ll have to now!

    Secret War?

  7. Dave Says:

Jesus, if she isn’t a Skrull looking to play both sides, then Spider-Woman is the most annoying goddamn character ever.

6 months ago: “Oh god, I don’t trust anyone on the New Avengers, Tony Stark is the only person I can trust!”

Now: “Oh god, I don’t trust Tony Stark, the New Avengers are the only people I can trust!”

Cover of Secret Invasion #3: “Make out with me, Tony Stark!”

  8. Dawn Says:

    Thanks Shaun! :D

  9. Steven R. Stahl Says:

If, for example, the SI storyline claims that any longtime Marvel hero has been a Skrull sleeper agent since the ’70s stories, I would regard that as evidence of creative bankruptcy, to a greater degree than anything Marvel Editorial has come up with before, including “One More Day.”

  10. Alan Coil Says:

Event fatigue has been talked about quite a bit recently. I’m not sure I agree, but what I am TRULY getting tired of reading is:

“The Marvel universe will not be the same.”

  11. Lawrence Says:

    Spider-Woman isn’t a Skrull; she’s only working for them.

  12. somebody Says:

I think they should end it by retconning everything. Completely erase all the complicated histories of the characters are start over with a completely blank slate. No cosmic war to precipitate it, just one day BANG! the storyline in progress vanishes and is replaced by telling a new version of everyone’s origin stories (or, better yet, just start new plots and see how long it takes people to figure out that everything has changed).

The main reason to do this is to piss on all the rabid fanboys who have been forcing comic companies into creative straightjackets to begin with.

All I have to say is I know Cap is not dead, And yes, I added 2 + 2 already.
