March goes out with a bang as the last Wednesday of the month delivers a veritable treasure trove of quality releases.
Yes, I said “veritable treasure trove.”
New issues of Gilbert Hernandez’s Speak of the Devil, Jason Lutes’ Berlin and Kevin Huizenga’s Ganges all hit this week. Kid-friendly fare comes in the form of Flight Explorer, Power Pack: Day One, The Clouds Above and Wolverine: First Class. Geoff Johns retells the origin of Hal Jordan in the pages of Green Lantern. And David Hajdu revisits the anti-comics crusades of the 1950s in The Ten-Cent Scare.
To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.
Kevin’s pick of the week: Fairy Tail, Vols. 1-2
Perhaps taking a cue from Viz Media’s “Naruto Nation” initiative, Del Rey Manga smartly releases the first two volumes of Hiro Mashima’s (Rave Master) addictive fantasy-comedy-adventure. Sure, it’s a bit of a genre hodgepodge — a powerful character with a silly weakness (motion sickness) and enormous appetite, a cute animal sidekick, senseless fights — but it’s all so genuine and fun, none of the cliches seem to matter.
In Mashima’s world, wizards are (mostly) well-meaning, if not always well-behaved, celebrities with obsessive fans who hang on every detail about their idols revealed in Tiger Beat-style magazines. When they’re not drinking, eating or brawling among themselves, these wizards, assembled in separate guilds, hire themselves out as mercenaries — not so much for the money as for the challenge, and the fame. As you may imagine, that leads to one quest after another, as our heroes face increasingly, and absurdly, powerful foes.
But it also leads to loads of mindless fun. For a second opinion, check out Chris’ review from a couple of weeks ago.
Chris’ pick of the week: The Ten-Cent Plague
In a week stuffed with wonderful releases, David Hajdu’s neatly takes the top spot. That’s partly because I just finished reading and reviewing the book, so its stories about Frederic Wertham and the anti-comics crusade are still fresh in my mind. Hajdu paints a vivid picture of the era of crime and horror comics and the men that published them. Hajdu clearly stakes his claim that this battle was the opening shot in the culture wars of the 60s, and he makes a compelling case. Expect to see this book top a lot of best lists, both on comics blogs and in the mainstream media, come December.
Apocalypse Nerd trade paperback
Chris: Peter Bagge’s six-issue series about a loser forced to “rough it” after Seattle is nuked marks some sort of odd turning point for Bagge, though I can’t quite articulate how or why. It’s certainly one of the darkest things he’s done so far: Its main characters lack anything resembling morals, and it doesn’t so much end as just stop (presumably before it gets any worse). That doesn’t mean it’s not worth reading. Far from it, it’s an intriguing and occasionally hilarious imagining of how people behave once the glove come off. I’m just curious as to what he’ll do for an encore.
Speak of the Devil #5 (of 6)
Chris: Hot damn, here’s another issue of one of the best limited series currently running. Gilbert Hernandez’s blood- and sex-soaked tale hits the road in this latest issue, as the three main characters take their murder spree cross-country. Gilbert Hernandez, Rob Zombie. Rob Zombie, Gilbert Hernandez.
All-Star Superman #10
Kevin: Although I ‘m not as enthralled with this series as I once was, this remains my favorite take on the Man of Steel in, well, forever. Expect all the pieces to begin falling together as Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely wind down their run.
Green Lantern #29
Kevin: I didn’t realize Hal Jordan’s origin required a retelling, but apparently Geoff Johns thinks it does. This issue starts the “Secret Origin” arc which, I imagine, will insert clues/references to the “Blackest Night” prophecy into Jordan’s back-story.
Hellblazer #242
Kevin: Andy Diggle and Leonardo Manco wrap up the immensely enjoyable “Laughing Magician” storyline with this issue.
Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus, Vol. 4
Chris: Completing Kirby’s New Gods run, this fourth volume is especially notable for containing his graphic novel The Hunger Dogs, which, if memory serves, was Kirby’s attempt to wrap the whole story up. All that plus 25 restored pages and a collection of art Kirby did for the 1980s Who’s Who series.
Showcase Presents: Booster Gold, Vol. 1
Kevin: I loved this series when I was a kid — well, at least the first half-dozen or so issues that I bought — but I’m not sure how it’ll hold up to rereading. This 600-plus-page edition collects Booster Gold #1-25 and Action Comics #594.
Newuniversal: Everything Went White trade paperback
Chris: The trade paperback release of the “first season” (ie issues 1-6) of Warren Ellis’ attempt to revamp the New Universe characters comes out just in time to get readers pumped for the arrival of the “second season” in May.
Power Pack: Day One #1 (of 4)
Kevin: After several miniseries starring the Power children, Marvel retells their origin in what’s supposed to establish a “new continuity” for the team.
Wolverine: First Class #1
Kevin: I’m guessing this new all-ages series may be in anticipation of the Wolverine and the X-Men animated series, as it focuses on the “next generation” Professor Xavier’s recruits — namely, Colossus, Storm, Nighcrawler, Kitty Pryde and, of course, Wolverine.
Asterix Omnibus, Vols. 1-2, hardcovers
Asterix Omniubs, Vols. 1-2, softcovers
Chris: No doubt inspired by those Tintin compendiums that hit stores a few years ago, the Asterix Omnibuses (omnibusi?) give you three classic stories for your $20, which is a pretty good deal, especially if you haven’t been introduced to the super-strong Gaul’s adventures yet. The first book collects Asterix the Gaul, Asterix and the Golden Sickle, and Asterix and the Goths. The second collects the later Uderzo books Asterix and the Actress, Asterix and the Class Act, and Asterix and the Falling Sky. I’d choose the former over the latter, as the later Asterix books tend to fall short (to be charitable) compared to the early works with writer Rene Goscinny.
Berlin #15
Chris: I take back all the mean things I said about Jason Lutes’ glacial pace on this series. He’s really been churning the issues out at a speedy (for an small press series) pace and the quality hasn’t dimmed one iota. Bully for him.
The Clouds Above
Chris: Jordan Crane’s charming all-ages series about the magical, surreal adventures of a boy and his cat as they make their way to school a more affordable paperback makeover.
Daddy’s Girl hardcover
Chris: This almost was my choice for pick of the week, and I’m still not sure I made the right decision. Debbie Dreschler’s harrowing, episodic tale of sexual abuse is one of the seminal works of the 1990s. It’s a emotionally stark, disturbing and apparently somewhat autobiographical account of a young girl forced to deal with her father’s unwelcome visits in the night. No, it’s not a “fun” book and it won’t leave you happy inside. At times it’s almost too painful to read. But I sincerely doubt you’ll read a more affecting or more powerful work of art this week. Preview here.
Dark Wraith of Shannara
Kevin: I imagine this Del Rey adaptation, by Robert Place Napton and Edwin David, will only be of interest to die-hard fans of Terry Brooks.
The Education of Hopey Glass hardcover
Chris: Collecting some of the recent Locas stories in the (soon-to-be-defunct) Vol. II version of Love and Rockets, Education finds Hopey adjusting to a new life and career as a teacher’s aide while Ray attempts to romance the increasingly annoying “Frogmouth.” A pretty good jumping-on point for newcomers, though probably not as good as the previous Ghosts of Hoppers. Preview here.
Flight Explorer, Vol. 1
Chris: A decidedly more kid-friendly version of Kazu Kibuishi’s anthology. Most, if not all, of the stories have a decided fantasy feel to them, and the debt to Hayao Miyazaki is immense. Still, the art’s durned pretty. Kizubishi, Kean Soo, Phil Craven and Jake Parker are among the contributors.
Fritz Lang’s M
Chris: This is a bit of an odd coincidence for me, as I just bought the Criterion edition of this classic Fritz Lang film. Not that you care one way or the other, but … well, it seemed odd to me. Anyway, this is a repackaging of Jon J. Muth’s attempt to adapt the Lang film, about a serial child killer on the loose whose seemingly unstoppable presence brings not just the police, but also the criminal element after him. I remember it being a pretty solid adaptation. Comes complete with a DVD of the film.
Funeral of the Heart
Chris: The debut graphic novel by Leah Hayes, though at first flip-through it appears to be more of an illustrated story (or stories, as the case may be) than outright comics. Semantics aside, Hayes proved with her sketchbook comic Holy Moly that she has a unique style and vision. I look forward to seeing how she applies it to a narrative.
Ganges #2
Chris: Man, obviously it must be Tempt Chris With Awesome Comics Week. Here’s the second issue of Kevin Huizenga’s ongoing Ignatz series. Expect more stunningly rendered slice-of-life stories about everyman Glenn Ganges and his metaphysical musings. I know I can’t wait.
The Mammoth Book of Best Horror Comics
Kevin: It’s only fitting that David Hajdu’s The Ten-Cent Plague is released the same week as this 512-page tome, which collects some of the stories that fueled the 1950s panic. But it also includes more modern works by the likes of Mike Ploog, Steve Niles, Bernie Wrightson, Mike Kaluta and others.
Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 trade paperback
Kevin: David Petersen’s beautifully illustrated anthropomorphic fantasy at last gets a softcover collection.
That Salty Air
Chris: A debut graphic novel by Tim Sievert. It’s about a fisherman whose mom dies and then he gets mad at the fish. There’s also a giant squid. I’m oversimplifying here. I should have a lengthier review at the end of the week.

This is way too much stuff. And isn’t Haunted supposed to be out this week as well?
March 25th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Dick — Supposedly, but I didn’t see it anywhere on Diamond’s list, so I’m surmising most stores won’t get it until next week.
March 25th, 2008 at 5:27 pm
Well, it’s not like this week lacks for quality. I’m dying to read Ganges #2.
March 25th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
Haunted’s been all over the place for the past 3 weeks? It isn’t officially out?
March 25th, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Hey, I’m just glad that SLG is finally putting out Gargoyles #8. My wife’s been on me for months wondering when the next issue would hit. Now that she’s posting here regularly, I wonder if we can get some answers from Jennifer as to why such a massive six month delay…
March 25th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
I think the big news this week has to be Blue Beetle #25, as the triumphant second-year-arc of one of the best comics out there comes to a close.
March 26th, 2008 at 7:55 am
BLUE BEETLE #25 you fools!
March 26th, 2008 at 8:28 am
Tucker — where have you seen copies? I got mine from D&Q yesterday but I haven’t seen any sign of in book stores or comic shops.
March 26th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
I think it’s only 3 1/2 months since the last Gargoyles, but the last time there was a long delay, Greg Weisman told the fan collective that the comic was stuck sitting on some Disney exec’s desk, waiting for approval. I suspect this happened again, and will continue to happen. Which is a shame since this comic is really quite good but can’t really build momentum. (At least I can tell you what happened last issue. I can’t do that with Runaways or All-Star Superman.)
In addition to Gargs and All-Star Supes, I am getting two books that are still on probation, Teen Titans and The Spirit. The current run on TT has been readable, but it feels like there’s not much new here, and the small cast of fairly minor heroes (aside from Robin and Wonder Girl) needs some help. (Why do we need a separate Titans book?)
The first issue of the Aragones/Evanier Spirit was cute but a letdown after the Cooke run, and while I much prefer lighthearted and lightweight to dour and depressing, I didn’t see much that isn’t old hat in that one issue.
