Drawn & Quarterly bookstore is open and ouvert

An “Open, Come In” sign at Drawn & Quarterly’s new Montreal bookstore has run afoul of Quebec’s language law because it is in English only.

The Montreal Gazette reports that an inspector from the Office québécois de la langue française (OLF) was dispatched to the Bernard Avenue West store on Friday in response to a complaint that its signage contained too much English.

The sign, which appears on the door of Librairie Drawn & Quarterly, is about 12 centimeters in diameter.

An OLF spokesperson told the newspaper that while the rest of the store “seems okay,” D&Q’s Chris Oliveros probably will be sent a letter asking that he includes a sign that reads, “Ouvert/Fermé.”

Oliveros notes that he had a previous encounter with the language office because the Drawn & Quarterly website was in English only.
