We really need a “scurrilous gossip” tag…

Okay, so we know that the cover to New Avengers #39 has been changed (although not because Rich pointed out any swiping or anything, ohhhhh But, over at Talk@, there’s a hint that the cover change came later than previously thought:

its now coming out MArch26th cause of that idiot rich johnston of lying in the gutters, usually i enjoy his column, but all the swipe nonsense is just getting beyond ____in ridiculous, supposedly marvel had to pulp the entire cover and mack has to do a new one. The swipe section was all fun and games but now it is directly leading to late books which is just wrong and must be stopped

Rich himself shows up and suggests that he had nothing to do with it:

Really? Bendis said the cover had been changed before LITG came out.

Might have had something to do with the legal letter Marvel received.

The previous cover was pulped because of legal threats? Interesting.

Cue the people coming in saying this sort of thing happens all the time and it wasn’t a legal issue and that, despite the trade dressing being on it, the swipe cover was never the final…

Cue the people coming in and saying: “Who cares?”

    Um…who cares?

You know, if you don’t swipe/steal/use existing artwork / photgraphs and um, you know, come up with your OWN artwork/poses/designs then you never have to worry about legal issues, late books.

Heh. Sooooo what’s worse, doing something sketchy or pointing out something sketchy?

I thought the same “idiot” reported a year or so back that Marvel’s legal folks sent around a letter to all their freelancers warning them against swiping?

Personally, I’d rather they be pointed out BEFORE they were published rather than after. It save the artists and company embarassment and, hopefully, gets the swipers to think before doign it again. Or, at the very least, getting their friends and family to dress up in funny comstumes for reference like Alex Ross does.

Yeah. I’m personally amazed at the way the Bendis tactic is working. His saying it isn’t the final cover (not that it never was the final cover) is actually getting a bunch of people to think the original was never supposed to be the cover (when Bendis never said that).

That’s the kind of work that, while it is a bit frustrating, I have to begrudgingly respect. Bendis didn’t lie, even if his comment was phrased in a way that he had to know would lead to many having a false impression.

    Everyone hates getting caught.

“Sampling” in music is legit if you credit the source. Borrowing passages without citations is called plagerism.
Didnt see anyone here doing that until they were exposed.

It seems that there are many artists working at Marvel today who know too much about how to copy other works.
