The Los Angeles Times profiles “Hollywood start-up” Marvel Studios as it prepares for the May release of Iron Man, its first independently produced film.
The Times wonders why Marvel has waited until now, after its major properties have already hit the big screen, to wade into the movie-making business. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has an answer: “We’re not in the movie business, we’re in the Iron Man business right now. Marvel owns the intellectual property. We have an Iron Man video game coming, the toys, the comics, we have an animated television show coming, a direct-to-DVD animated Iron Man movie last year. We’re going to have an Iron Man ride at an amusement park in Dubai in a few years. We have a different perspective.”

Um, they’re having an amusement park ride in Dubai? Oddly disturbing.
And what’s with the stealth marketing approach to Hulk? Must be pretty bad.

Personally, I don’t think their blowing off the Hulk movie. I believe they are just pushing their projects in the order in which they are coming out.

I hear there will be a Hulk trailer in theaters next week. It’s not like there has been a ton of marketing blitz yet for Indiana Jones, and that comes out a month sooner than Hulk.

Is it true that Marvel is making all these solo hero movies to lead up to an Avengers movie?

Jon Favreau has mentioned it.

Given that they could barely keep a single Iron Man book afloat 2 years ago … I think you’ll be seeing a lot of Iron Man merchandise at 60, 75, 90 percent off, final clearance in a few months. It’s absurd to have 8 pages worth of Iron Man junk advertised in Marvel comics this month, just like there was 8 pages worth of tie-in products for the last Hulk movie, etc.

Maybe they should take some notes from the HULK crew. The IRON MAN movie isn’t even out yet and I’m already getting tired of it.

It’s too bad that Iron Man in the comics is a complete douche. Kinda takes the excitement out of it for me.

I’m still excited for the movie since it’s Iron Man in his early days, but I’m kinda with Daniel on this. For me, the current version of Tony in the books is not appealing. Seeing him get thumped by **spoiler?** Hulk, Thor, Bucky, and Namor recently all made me smile.
I’m still up for the flick though.

You’d be in the minority

Really wasn’t a big Tony fan to begin with, and after all the events that have happened recently I really could care less for the movie. The Dark Knight!

I’m with the crowd here that says my enthusiasm has been relaly dampened by the comic interpretation of Tony, although the flick itself looks strong. We’ll see if I can bring myself to go see it in theaters.

This could be the best Marvel movie ever.
