Rich at Comic By Comic spotlights this Secret Invasion promotional piece that writer Brian Michael Bendis has begun using in his message-board signature. I love that it exploits the imagery of ’50s sci-fi movie posters, which oozed with Red Scare paranoia.
I realize there’s an incongruity between the “serious” tone of modern superhero comics and the campy “horror” of those films, but I’m pretty sure I would enjoy a Secret Invasion that cast aside all pretense and gleefully embraced that B-movie sensibility. (“Drawn in SkrullScope”? Come on!)
Update: Larger versions of the image can be found here. (Thanks, Travis.)

A much larger version of that would make a great widescreen monitor wallpaper.

Isn’t this all just a matter of…
Marvel Jerk 1: “Hey, we turned the character’s faces into zombie faces and that sold pretty well. What else can we turn their faces into?”
Marvel Jerk 2: “Umm, Skrulls are ugly like zombies.”
Marvel Jerk 1: “What’s a Skrull?”
Marvel Jerk 2: “Um, shape changing guys.”
Marvel Jerk 1: “And they are ugly? Perfect. Who owns that?”
Marvel Jerk 2: “Umm, we do.”
Marvel Jerk 1: “Genius! Have it ready by spring!”

Maybe Marvel can take a cue from the Roddy Piper classic cult film “They Live!” Marvel could sell special glasses that, when worn, reveal the hidden Skrull on a cover…
Cash cow! I’m onto something here!

Just waiting for the zombie versions of the Skrull covers.

Wow, Shannon Smith, Marvel-hating agenda much? Your post doesn’t even make sense, it’s just venom and vitriol from someone who probably has to go look up the latter word on Dictionary.com. Typical DC-dron troll on Newsarama. Sad, really

Shhh, Ethan! Shannon Smith thought he/she was being funny. Don’t burst the bubble for him/her!

It’s fun, though I think it’d be better had they put an -O- in SkrullScope. “Drawn in Skrull-O-Scope!” just sounds more 50′s B-movie to me.
March 6th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
“Wow”, Ethan. You think that is “venom and vitriol”? I’m not trying to knock Marvel’s hustle. I just think it’s funny how much it looks like the Marvel Zombies stuff. For me to imply that Marvel would re-use gimmicks that have made them money in the past isn’t really “venom and vitriol”. I’m not knocking it. It is what has kept them in business all these years. I just think it’s funny and I wonder what they will turn the characters into this time next spring.

Shannon, I’m hoping for Mini Marvels. Every book for the duration of the event.
Franklin Richards will be at fault.

Bendis has had his 15 minutes.

SOrry, Shannon, for assuming about you. That said, you do realize that Marvel is doing a storyline involving the Skrulls replacing people and this promo poster is for that event, whereas the Marvel Zombies covers last year were just variants? This isn’t a gimick, it’s something to promote their series, so it’s totally different. At least I think so…
March 6th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Yeah Ethan. I was just looking at it from a marketing standpoint.
As far as event comics go, I don’t think it’s a bad idea. Skrulls are fun. Skrull Kill Krew was highly underated.
