The Times on … Buffy’s latest intimate relationship?

March 5th, 2008

Oh, the things you’ll find in The New York Times.

In this morning’s edition (WARNING: SPOILERS), George Gene Gustines, who regularly reports on comics for the newspaper, talks with Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon about his heroine’s latest intimate entanglement, as revealed in this week’s Issue 12.

Buffy Summers has had relationships with the vampires Angel and Spike, and with the super-soldier Riley. There was even that sorry one-night stand with Parker.

But this week …

(WARNING: SPOILERS AFTER THE JUMP)

… she sleeps with fellow slayer Satsu. A woman.

That disturbing sound you hear is the collective squeal of Buffy/Willow slashfic writers merging with the throaty “Ohhhhh” of countless fanboys.

Whedon is quick to clarify the storyline which, he says, “evolved naturally.”

“We’re not going to make her gay, nor are we going to take the next 50 issues explaining that she’s not,” he tells The Times. “She’s young and experimenting, and did I mention open-minded?”

With what sounds to be a Japanese woman. This comic sounds like it hits on every fantasy possible for the straight male and gay female buffy fan. Shoot, I bet you the rest of the Buffy audience is turned on by this issue.

You better order your CCG copy off Wizard now.

  2. Simon DelMonte Says:

Joss might be the only writer I can think of who won’t let this be at all sensationalized.

I just wish the Times would have waited a day to run this. They would never run a story ruining a plot twist on Lost, but they always do this for comics – Spidey in CW, Cap’s death, and now this.
