Ah, it’s nearly springtime, when a publisher’s thoughts turn to launching new series.
Marvel returns to Stephen King’s Dark Tower universe with The Long Road Home, takes another crack at a Cable ongoing, and hands Wolverine over to Brian K. Vaughan and Eduardo Risso for the three-issue Logan.
At DC, Darwyn Cooke, J. Bone and Dave Bullock revisit The New Frontier, David Lapham kicks off his new Vertigo monthly Young Liar, while Wildstorm dips its toe into the superhero pool again with The New Dynamix.
Elsewhere, the Action Philosophers team of Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey tackle the lives of legendary creators with Comic Book Comics, Terry Moore introduces Echo, Antony Johnston and Ben Templesmith visit Dead Space, Chica Umino’s Honey & Clover jumps from the pages of Shojo Beat, and The EC Archives: Weird Science gets a pricey leather-bound volume.
Plus, Mark Evanier’s Jack Kirby biography finally hits the shelves.
To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.
Kevin’s pick of the week: Logan #1 (of 3)
My first exposure to Wolverine, and the X-Men, was in 1983, with Uncanny X-Men #173, which threw me into the middle of a story set in Tokyo, where Wolverine and Rogue battled the Silver Samurai, Yakuza, Viper and a bunch of ninja assassins. The enemies defeated, Logan goes on to his wedding ceremony, where he’s deemed unworthy by his bride-to-be, and unceremoniously dumped. Despite not knowing who any of the characters were, I was enthralled. There was something about the seeming contradiction of blood-thirsty killer and honor-bound warrior that appealed to me, even as a kid. My interest in Wolverine soon waned, but I still like the idea of a noble Logan in Japan, even if the stories themselves rarely live up to the promise.
“Rarely” is the operative word, as I’m certain this three-issue miniseries by Brian K. Vaughan and Eduardo Risso will be an exception. I like the premise well enough — the always-reliable “Wolverine returns to Japan to settle an old score” — and I enjoy Vaughan’s writing. But I’m not going to lie: It’s Risso’s art that’s the big selling point for me. I’m a big fan of his work — 100 Bullets, Chicanos, Batman: Broken City, etc. — and the thought of him illustrating a quasi-samurai/revenge tale has me absolutely giddy.
Chris’ pick of the week: Comic Book Comics #1
Despite some rough patches, I really enjoyed Fred Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey’s attempt to make philosophy more palatable via their last series, Action Philosophers. This new ongoing series, detailing the lives of various seminal comics folk like Jack Kirby and Siegel and Schuster, intrigues me even more, if only because in the past a lot of attempts have to tell various creators’ stories have tended to gloss over the dark patches in favor of a glossy, PR approach, less we discover our heroes have feet of clay. How, for example, will van Lente and Dunlavey come down on the Kirby/Lee debacle of who created what? Put me down as extremely curious.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #12
Kevin: Writer Drew Goddard (Lost, Cloverfield and the Buffy TV series) comes onboard for the four-issue “Wolves at the Gate” story arc, which strongly hints at the possibility of werewolves. In Tokyo. They’re writing comics just for me this week.
All-New Atom #21
Kevin: This issue sees the debut of new regular creative team Rick Remender and Pat Olliffe.
DC Special: Raven #1 (of 5)
Kevin: Raven co-creator Marv Wolfman joins with Damion Scott for a five-issue spotlight on the Teen Titans empath.
Fables: 1,001 Nights of Snowfall softcover
Chris: The softcover edition of Vertigo’s attempt to do a Endless Nights-style anthology, only with the Fables universe. I remember it being not as comparatively strong as the series itself, which doesn’t really make it a good place for newcomers to dive in. Some lovely art by folks like Tara McPherson, though.
Justice League: The New Frontier Special
Kevin: Coinciding with the release of the direct-to-DVD animated movie, this 48-special features a collection of stories starring King Farraday, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Sgt. Rock and others.
The New Dynamix #1 (of 5)
Kevin: I hate to be cynical — really! — but I have to wonder why Wildstorm is bothering with another superhero title. The New Dynamix may be the greatest thing since oxygen, but aside from Ex Machina and, perhaps, The Programme, the imprint hasn’t had much success with new “superhero” concepts in … well, a while.
Teen Titans: Year One #3 (of 6)
Kevin: Oh, Amy Wolfram and Karl Kerschl, how I love this miniseries. Who must I bribe to make your version of the Teen Titans an ongoing series?
Young Liars #1
Kevin: Stray Bullets creator David Lapham kicks off his new Vertigo series about a dysfunctional group of losers that, the solicitation text tells us, “will run from poorly disguised assassins, demented billionaires and psychotic midgets” in a quest for fame and fortune.
Casanova #12
Chris: The mystery of when Casanova Quinn is continues in this latest issue.
Dead Space #1 (of 6)
Kevin: I know nothing about the video game on which this is based, but the names Antony Johnston and Ben Templesmith are enough to sell me on this horror comic.
Cable #1
Cable Classic, Vol. 1
Kevin: Two things come to mind: New Coke and Coca-Cola Classic; and, Is Cable one of those characters that’s such a product of a specific era that he defies successful updating? I admit that I’ve never followed the character closely — I wasn’t even reading comics during his heyday — but he seems so quintessentially early ’90s that he sticks out like a cybernetic sore thumb in most any other setting. Nevertheless, Duane Swierczynski and Ariel Olivetti launch the character in another ongoing series that the writer describes as “a sci-fi spaghetti western police procedural samurai story.” Maybe the genre grab-bag is the way to bring the futuristic, giant gun-toting mutant from the 1990s into the 21st century.
The Dark Tower: The Long Road Home #1 (of 5)
Kevin: What’s with the popularity of “The Long Road Home” as a subtitle? It was the name of the first Buffy Season 8 arc, then it was the name of an Army of Darkness series, and now it’s the name of the follow-up to the successful Dark Tower miniseries. Anyway … this five-part miniseries reunites Peter David, Robin Furth, Jae Lee and Richard Isanove for another crack at Stephen King’s creation. Yesterday, Tom Spurgeon remarked that there doesn’t seem to be the level of anticipation for this series as there was for The Gunslinger Born. I’m pretty sure he’s right.
Secret Invasion Saga #1
Kevin: From what I gather, this is a free trailer, of sorts, for Marvel’s big summer event.
Andromeda Stories, Vol. 3
Chris: The third and final volume of Keiko Takemiya’s sci-fi series comes to comic shops this week, though it’s been out in regular book stores for quite some time now. I’m still trying to get my hands on a copy of Vol. 1, so I can’t offer too much of an opinion except to say that I enjoyed To Terra quite a bit.
C’est Bon Athology, Vol. 4
Chris: This looks interesting. An anthology featuring work by Rutu Modan, David Mack, Trina Robbins and others. I doubt it “pushes the boundaries” as much as the pr copy would have you believe, but it’s probably worth a flip through.
Daybreak, Vol. 2
Chris: Brian Ralph’s ongoing, first-person viewpoint zombie story continues in this second volume from Bodega. If you like zombies or apocalyptic stories (and these days it seems everyone does), I highly recommend checking this out. Preview here.
The EC Archives: Weird Science, Vol. 1, limited leather-bound hardcover
Chris: For those who thought the first volume wasn’t expensive enough, here comes a deluxe edition bound in — mmmmmmm — leather.
Fever, Vol. 1
Kevin: I cracked open Hee Jung Park’s (Hotel Africa) drama just last night, but I already like what I’ve seen: After her friend commits suicide, high school student Hyung-in seeks an escape. When she meets meets two boys on a bus, they set off on a journey to the mysterious Fever. As I said, I haven’t read it yet, but the art is certainly stunning.
Guin Saga Manga, Vol. 3: Seven Magi
Chris: The final volume in the “leopard-headed king slays evil wizards” fantasy manga saga from Vertical. I should have a review of the whole shebang up this Friday.
Honey & Clover, Vol. 1
Kevin: After a stint in Viz Media’s Shojo Beat, Chica Umino’s popular romantic comedy-drama about a group of students at an art college finally sees a full North American release.
Lucky Luke, Vol. 9: Wagon Train
Chris: Hey, kids! Kids comics!
Naruto, Vol. 28
Chris: “Naruto Nation” having proven to be an unqualified success, Masashi Kishimoto’s uber-popular ninja saga returns this week with a new storyline that jumps ahead several years to find a teen-age Naruto attempting to save one of his former teammates.
Rose Hip Rose, Vol. 1
Kevin: I’ve been craving action-packed and violent comics lately — of the non-superhero variety — but while Rose Hip Rose has plenty of gunfights and explosions, it has an almost-equal dose of panty/upskirt shots. Unfortunately, I’m having trouble balancing them in my mind.
Terry Moore’s Echo #1
Chris: It’s an odd self-publishing confluence going on right now, what with Jeff Smith, Dave Sim and Terry Moore all debuting new, lengthy series within the same short span of time. This week sees the debut of Moore’s Echo, about a young photographer named Julie Martin, who becomes the host to “a symbiotic nuclear weapon.” Huh.
Kirby: King of Comics hardcover
Chris: Mark Evanier’s long-awaited biography about Jack Kirby finally sees the light of day. This could turn out to be one of the most highly-acclaimed comics-related prose books of the year. I know I’m eager to read it.
Service Industry
Chris: This mini-comic by T. Edward Bak floored me when I originally picked it up at SPX several years ago. Now Bodega has republished it an nice oversize format. It’s hard to describe the book — it’s sort of Bak’s train of thoughts about his place in life — but well worth your time. Sample pages can be found here.
Otaku Magazine USA, Vol. 3
Chris: The numbering here seems a tad off, but if I’m right, this is the latest issue of the upstart manga and anime magazine, featuring Bleach on the cover and articles on CLAMP and Golgo 13.

I’ll wait and see about “Logan” I guess… A Wolverine story that doesn’t disappoint would be a refreshing change.

Light week for me - just Buffy and TT:Y1.
As much as I love BKV, I just don’t care for Logan. I was in the library last week and found TPBs collecting old Wolvie stories by Goodwin and PAD with art by people like Byrne, and still couldn’t muster interest to read them for free.

The Kirby book isn’t the actual big ass biography. It’s a coffee table style books with a short version of the bio and a lot of really fantastic art. The detailed bio comes out later on.
