CW renews Smallville, Supernatural, four others

March 3rd, 2008

Smallville's Tom Welling

Variety reports that The CW has given the go-ahead for six shows to return next fall, including an eighth season of Smallville and a fourth season of Supernatural. For some reason I thought this was the final season of Smallville, but I guess not.

Also given the green light are America’s Next Top Model, Everybody Hates Chris, One Tree Hill and the best new show of the season, Gossip Girl (XOXO). Still on the fence are two other shows I like, Reaper and Aliens in America.

I imagine he’ll eventually be the next superman in something theatrical.

seems like common sense, now that Roth isn’t returning.

  3. Jason M. Bryant Says:

Probably not. Doing a movie would completely typecast the guy forever. He’s probably going to have a problem with that anyway, but this would make it impossible for anyone to think of him as anything but Superman. John Schneider has actually told him he shouldn’t do it because of that.

Plus, the movie makers probably wouldn’t want him. It would tie them in with Smallville continuity when they will almost certainly want to tell their own story.

Also surprised to hear Smallville’s coming back, and thought this was the last season. Was that announced at some point? Maybe it just seems like the right time to wind it up. The CW obviously disagrees.

  5. Kevin Huxford Says:

Michael Rosenbaum said something about this being the last few episodes for him as Luthor, I think…so that might be what has given life to the idea the show is ending.

I don’t think this was ever reported in the US, but in a British magazine titled SFX a few years ago they had an article about the aborted DRAGONFLIGHT tv series which, right after the WB bought the series concept, they lost BUFFY to Fox. So the WB wanted DRAGONFLIGHT retooled to have teenage heroes, etc. The producers refused because that wasn’t the concept they sold, so the WB dropped that project and hired someone to create a new series, which became SMALLVILLE, which has a hero with powers who fights superpowered evil around his small town and has a circle of friends. . .
