Justice League on for 2009

February 27th, 2008
Author JK Parkin

The Justice League, by Alex Ross

Variety reports that the Justice League movie, which was shelved earlier this year due to the writer’s strike, is back in business:

Scribes Kieran and Michele Mulroney are busy polishing up the script, which is expected back at the studio in several weeks, and the cast has been advised to keep training for their superhero roles. Director George Miller is in pre-production in Australia.

Adam Brody, cast as the Flash, is the biggest star in the superhero lineup. Rapper Common nabbed the Green Lantern role; other roles went to lesser-known thesps such as Armie Hammer Jr. (Batman) and Megan Gale (Wonder Woman).

  1. chr70 Says:

Oh man, I hope they made it right….

  2. Jor-L Says:

This is possibly the only bad part about the resolution of the Writer’s Strike. I wish I knew why DC and WB were insisting on going ahead with this one before other properties are developed properly and with greater skill than this film bears.

  3. Strange Says:

This movie should NOT be made for the time being. The cast is quite poor and it seems to me if they’re going to rush it out.

However, if they do make and release it I will watch it and give it a fair chance.

  4. Duke Jupiter Says:

When I first read that, I thought they had Adrien Brody cast as the Flash. Now that’s an inspired decision!

  5. Brent Says:

Megan Gale is the number one female fashion model in Australia. She has an air of Lynda Carter but will bring heaps more to the role. Trust us Aussies guys, if anyone can do it she’ll make a great Wonder Woman.

  6. rolando Says:

This movie will seriously destroy any good momentum and good will created by the latest Batman movies and even Singer’s Superman.

I just read George Clooney’s TIME interview where he said his worst film was Batman and Robin because “they gave us a release date and then told us to go make a movie.” Sound familiar?

This will be another Batman and Robin. This will be an atomic bomb on DC based movies. Hell, it could be so bad, it’ll be an atomic bomb on all comic-based movies. Thanks WB.

  7. Gavin Says:

Justice League makes baby Jesus cry.

  8. Alex Holt Says:

Its a bit harsh to judge something before we know anythign about it beyond part of the cast and that it is a Justice League film. It could be awful, it could be superb, but it’s definatly in DCs and Warners interest to try and make it good. As for destroying momentum: bear in mind that a film doesn’t have to be criticially appraised to be successful. I’m going to wait until we have something more than words to base this on and then I’ll tart forming an oppinion.

Batman and Robin was a bad film because it was a bad film, time restraints may make it harder, but they don’t make or break a film on their own.

  9. tridon Says:

I really doubt this’ll be any good. The only way this could possibly be good is if they DON’T include Batman and Superman. None of the other characters have had their own films so it won’t matter if they’re in there.

  10. Retconned Says:

This will be a white-hot mess. Meagan Gale is an awesome choice…but put her in a stand-alone WW movie.

This won’t work. I hope it does, but it won’t.

  11. lebeau Says:

    What a bunch of whiners!

Why do people have to confirm the “comic book guy” stereo type everytime a super hero movie comes out? It’s a movie. Not the end of the world.

If it’s good, you will all be singing it’s praises when it comes out. If not, it will be forgotten and other super hero movies will take its place.

    Grow up a little!

  12. caats19 Says:

    i’m surprised

  13. Woburn Says:

jebus christicles, why are some of you so reluctant to give this a chance? i think Adam Brody could handle Flash’s wise-crackiness, Common is a great choice for Jon Stewart, Megan Gale will do a pretty good Wonder Woman, the writers will TRY not to fuck it up for you, and the director will do his job and DIRECT the fecking thing. no one is setting out to make a bad movie here.

  14. AUTOVTAIM Says:

    OH-MY-GOSH!
    PLIZZZ JESUS,NOT MEGAN GALE!
I’m italian and in Italy she’s the chick from mobile phone spot and the typical”valletta”.
And she is veeery skunk in those roles…so i can’t imagine her as WW!

  15. AuH20 Says:

Lebeau, a comment that is almost devoid of content other than attacking other people is hardly constructive.

To the little substance you add to this discussion, it isn’t necessarily the case that a bad Justice League movie would have no negative impact on the future of superhero movies. Executives could become less inclined to greenlight solo movies about individual members of the League, which frankly includes pretty much every high-profile DC superhero. Worse, Christopher Nolan could (rightly) perceive a JL movie in 2009 as intruding on his very serious, very literary approach to Batman and then refuse to make a third movie.

My concern is that, in an attempt to keep up with Marvel’s output, DC is trying to do too much, too quickly. The end result won’t be the end of the world — no one suggested that it would be — but it could do damage to the high-quality films that would otherwise be made.

  16. Rich Says:

Is Scott Porter still attached for Superman? Because that casting would certainly sell me.

And see who’s playing Martian Manhunter here: http://comicbycomic.blogspot.com/2008/02/martian-manhunter-cast.html

  17. Fanboy Menace Says:

Why try them one at a time when you can crash and burn all of your superhero properties in one fell swoop.

  18. Jon Grasseschi Says:

I’d have been on board with this five years ago.

Then Spider-Man 2 and Batman Begins came out and set the bar for superhero flicks ridiculously high.

Unless this flick starts shaping up to be the Citizen Kane of the spandex set, pass.

  19. ugh Says:

Not using Brandon or Christian is a HUGE mistake. I hope the movie bombs terribly. Maybe the JL will be remade correctly like whats happening with the Hulk movie.

  20. AuH20 Says:

Fanboy Menace has it exactly right:

Why try them one at a time when you can crash and burn all of your superhero properties in one fell swoop.

If movies for the “big five” of the Justice League had already been released; and if most of the most recent releases had been reasonably well received, and some very well received; and if there was a compelling story that brought these characters together that honored what had been done before: then and only then would a Justice League movie make a whole lot of sense.

JL isn’t like Fantastic Four or the X-Men: a poor X-Men movie doesn’t directly impact high-profile characters like Spiderman or Hulk, but a poor JL movie would affect other movies about Superman and Wonder Woman because they’re directly involved. It’s an obvious risk in terms of putting too many eggs in a basket.

Of the criteria I listed above, only one could possibly fit. We haven’t had movies for Green Latern, Wonder Woman, or Flash. Batman Begins was very well received, but Superman Returns didn’t approach reaching its potential. The only hope is that JL is attached to a story so fantastic that it must be made now: sooner rather than later, before any related franchises can even get started.

In the absence of any evidence, that hope is probably irredeemibly naive.

  21. Brian Davison Says:

This trainwreck is actually going forward? We’re as doomed as doomed could be.

  22. Garion115 Says:

Why is it everytime a new movie based on a license property is announced, with little information available, does every uber-geek automatically assume the movie will suck. I am not saying every movie released is good or great (ex. Dolph’s PUNISHER, X-Men 3), but wait till it gets released before deciding one way or the other.

When it was announced that Daniel Craig was the new Bond, the fanatics said they would boycott it because he had blonde hair….how stupid was that. Casino Royale was praised by critics and fans alike, and is concidered by many as the best Bond out there (though I still think Goldfinger is better lol).

All I’m saying is give JLA a chance….you never know, it might surprise you.

  23. Deep shock Says:

    YEEEESSSS!!! GO JLA GO!!!

  24. B|ackPanther Says:

Like this will ever come out.

  25. Sam Says:

Not to be all doom and gloom, but this is a horrible idea.

They obviously just wanna compete with Marvel’s output, so they’re just throwing anyone they can in tights and telling ‘em to make a movie by X-Date.

Yeah, Marvel’s putting out a lot, too, but they’re at least taking a little more care and time with theirs, especially since they’re funding their movies now.

  26. gee Says:

Note to Blog Moderator: Sorry about complaining, but can someone change the title. Justice League Flick still kind of looks like Justice League F*ck, and I don’t think that’s what you were going for when you typed it out.

  27. Jack Says:

Hmm.. Hope this is the right way to go with unknowns. Would love for this to work out. But does the public want to see a super team movie with a cast like Armie Hammer Jr & Common.. or does a movie with Robert Downey Jr. Edward Norton and Kevin McKidd sound better?

  28. Skyrider Says:

I was hoping the writer’s strike would kill this film dead. I can only pray this never actually hits the screen because all signs are pointing to a horrible production not in touch at all with the characters or the comics.

The fact that we haven’t heard of any involvement from ANY of the DC Comics creators AT ALL just solidifies my position.

  29. Michael Says:

Justice League is going to kick the Avenger movie ass mean what loser would want to see all single hero movie just to see them team up with their 50 year old get it when their young or don’t do it at all

Mean look at how smallville did it that was perfect

  30. Chris Says:

Yikes. Not excited for this news. I would MUCH rather wait a few years for a movie with a decent chance of being good….

  31. eddie young Says:

    Who is MC Hammer Jr??

  32. Roy Says:

I would rather have “JL” as a CGI-animated film than…this.

At least the “Watchmen” film seems sound (Check out the pic of Rorscrach burning that SWAT cop on the official website! :D )

  33. Rjackson Says:

That guy they cast as Martian Manhunter was the character Toecutter in the original Mad Max movie . . . a George Miller directed masterpiece. Now, in my opinion Miller has fallen pretty far since then (although Babe was excellent), but maybe this will turn things around for the director. I haven’t been thrilled with the casting (at least for Batman and Superman), but I know nothing about the WW actress, so I can’t judge her and she does have the “look.” I think Brody as Flash is good casting actually - if you can’t get Ryan Reynolds, at least.

I am going to hold off on complaining - I want to, but I also want this to be good so I am going to try and wait until there is a finished script and we start seeing stuff from the shoot.

  34. Shaun Says:

Smallville did it “perfect”? I actually tried to watch that JL episode… Let’s just say it doesn’t bode well for this movie.

I’m sorry, but the guy playing Batman is named “Armie”? I’d like to see his Batman go up against Christian Bale’s Batman and see which one is left standing. HINT: It won’t be “Armie’s.”

I’m not saying a JLA movie can’t work, but this “JLA 90210″ approach is NOT the way to do it. Let the Nolan Bat-franchise do its thing, work on rebooting Superman for the 21st century, and maybe then if all goes well consider a World’s Finest (or Superman/Batman these days) movie.

That could lay the groundwork for eventual JLA movie nicely, but one that has actors who actually look like adults, not rejects from the CW network. As someone else mentioned, get actual comic writers involved.

Who wouldn’t want someone like Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, or Greg Rucka (or if those guys aren’t your style, some other acclaimed writer) involved in crafting an intelligent movie that treats the characters — and audience — with respect? Not some rush job with a bunch of young, pretty faces and (likely) little respect for the source material.

I just think the timing is all wrong and that this project has the potential to destroy any potential for bringing DC characters to the big screen, with the exception of Nolan’s Batman since that’s already well-established. But even then, this movie could serve to confuse audiences and derail interest in a third Nolan Bat-flick.

  35. Jason M. Bryant Says:

“I’m not saying a JLA movie can’t work, but this “JLA 90210″ approach is NOT the way to do it.”

    How is this “JLA 90210?”

  36. M Says:

This is the worst comic movie news ever.
If this movie goes into production for sure, I’m cancelling every D.C. comic on my pull list PERMANENTLY. I’m done with DC and Warners.
Why even bother releasing the Dark Knight??
Why are they ruining Batman again?!?! RUINING IT!
D.C. sucks so bad it gives me a headache.
The should have just gotten shumacher back, and put nipples
on Batman, and brought back Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, and Chris Odonnel as Robin, and added Vern Troyer as Bat Mite, and Ace the Bat Hound too.
Warners officially sucks. I wish the strike could happen again, simply so this movie couldn’t happen. I hope D.C. is happy when this movie comes out and ruins Batman, Superman, Flash, and Wonder Woman in one fell swoop.
The only good news is, Marvel’s still making decent movies…
I want to go back to sleep and hope I wake up again and this was a bad nightmare.

  37. hypestyle Says:

they need to put this movie out with a big budget and excellent costumes and special effects, lots of CGI..

  38. j smith Says:

I hope they make it.I hope they include Superman and Batman.A JL film without these two is like X-men without Wolverine and Professor X.I have no issues with newcomers.Sometimes seasoned actors have too much baggage, and truth to be told I like Megan Gale for Diana and Brody for Flash.People are talking as if the general movie going public really care about continuity. As if we care about Lois and Jason after Singer’s failure to awe audiences. And if you’re a Bat fan what does that have to do with JL affecting you?The average movie goer wants to be awed and inspired and entertained. It’s what translates into bucks.

  39. Nat Gertler Says:

Michael Keaton? As Batman? Seriously, what is Tim Burton thinking?! This movie’s gonna crash and burn the first weekend. Nobody wants to see Mr. Mom fight crime!

  40. The Observer Says:

they can’t get the comic book right. i have little hope for the movie

  41. Matt D Says:

They’re basing it on a Rucka story. I don’t see how it can be THAT bad.

  42. Asuma Says:

I’m just confused as to why they are using John Stewart Green Lantern. I would think that Hal Jordan or Kyle Rayner would be better off but that’s just my bias towards those characters perhaps showing through a bit. Does the JLU cartoon really make John Stewart GL that much more recognizable?

  43. Karmix Says:

Adrian Brody in the Flash role? I don’t know,I don’t think he looks like any of the Flashes I’ve seen before!

As for the rest of the cast, I think it is a good idea to have relatively unknown actors to play the important roles, otherwise it would become very expensive to have Christian Bale and Brandon Routh ( or even Tomm Welling) in the movie, just because of their respective franchises.

I have mixed feelings about this one, but if it is done I will be in the line to watch it.

  44. Roy Says:

    How is this “JLA 90210?”

    Comment by Jason M. Bryant

Getting a youthful cast to play adult characters.

  45. Michael Says:

Man this is why I hate live action movie because the fans bitch and cry when its don’t go their way well screw the fans i say closed down DC and marvel and then let see who complying

  46. metlaneth Says:

Please! Someone! Kill this movie before production starts!!!

Warner Bros. is full of idiots.

This movie will suck. It’ll be another Batman & Robin disaster. We all know it… except the heads of WB.

Continue Batman frachise with Chris Nolan on board. Restart Superman franchise (no Singer). Start Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern franchises (at least do one solo movie). THEN go for a JLA movie with the SAME actors.

WB should learn something from Marvel Studios and how they’re handling Avengers movie.

  47. Michael Says:

Are you stuipd Marvel Studios doesn’t have a damn idea what their doing their wasting money and time making all their heros live action

  48. Jason M. Bryant Says:

“Getting a youthful cast to play adult characters. ”

One of the actors is 22. Okay, that’s a little young.

The rest are 28, 28, 31, and 35. That means most of the cast is *older* than the characters were when they joined the JLA.

People are calling this “JLA 90210″ when most of the actors are older than the characters.

  49. AirDave Says:

This could be like one of two things: 1) A gapers block at a multi-car pile-up on the interstate or B) 4th of July fireworks. I’m hoping for the 4th of July fireworks. If we can see Kelsey Graemmer as The Beast, then I would like to see DC’s Magnificent Seven. Even if Superman and Batman only make a cameo at the end, I would be happy. I would rather see Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, J’Onn J’Onzz and Wonder Woman. There have been so many cool versions of the League’s origin written that could be adapted…

    4th of July fireworks VS. multi-car pile-up…Hrmmm…

  50. Michael Says:

so Bale is 25 playing a character that 50 year old

  51. chewitt Says:

Come on…seriously, no one is asking for this movie, no one wants this movie. Why force this future disaster on an unsuspecting public?

  52. Rev. O.J. Flow Says:

You know what this discussion is lacking? Hyperbole. :)

  53. J-Rad Says:

Man, nothing about this movie sounds good. I mean, I like the idea of using JLA to springboard certain characters into their own flicks. Smart way to do it.

But, with a cast and a director that I can’t muster any excitement about (and actually, have a tiny sense of dread for)I think this could well be a rushed, crassly greedy disaster.

  54. Michael Says:

Well no one was asking for a other batman and superman movie and we got those too disaster

  55. Wayne Says:

Good lord. A brief blurb and a short cast list, not even an alpha version of the script done and already people are trashing the film in spittle-driven fits of nerd rage.

Adam Brody as The Flash is a great idea; he’s a fine actor (he was the comics fan on The OC). Relative unknowns all around for comics characters are perfect, since we’re going to see the characters and not the actors.

  56. marcus de sade Says:

sorry but this doesnot sound good at all it s going to be awfull and you all know it. remember the old tv movie from the late 90’s?

  57. Teerev Says:

A live action JLA movie in my opionion wont work, no matter how well the script is.

You have your two biggest properties with ongoing movie continuity and you are going to throw that out the window….because?

  58. Dario Says:

It’s great how much loathe and hate there is towards this movie, and how many people already KNOW this is going to be the worst movie in hystory, based solely on the casting. gotta love the internet!

  59. superman987654 Says:

Can anyone say BATMAN & ROBIN PART 2?

THIS MOVIE IS A BIGGER MISTAKE THAN ANYTHING WB HAS EVER DONE! THIS WILL BE AWFUL!!

  60. chewitt Says:

“Well no one was asking for a other batman and superman movie and we got those too disaster”

Umm…if you thought Batman Begins was a disaster, I’d hate to know what you think is good.

  61. Dean Trippe Says:

good grief i wish someone would kill this thing already

  62. FD Says:

Aside from Common, I don’t feel as if the casting is particularly inspired. None of the actors/actresses seem to really fit the role.

I want to see this movie get made, but not until the script is solid (right now, it’s supposedly a popcorn flick) and the members are re-cast (save for Common).

  63. Andy Red Says:

Im going to say it. Worst idea since Greedo shooting first. No Hal Jordan = annoying for Green Lantern Fans and stupid. Before people jump on me i know why they are doing it. Doesnt mean i agree. They need to stop, think and listen to the fans. After all we’re the ones who are going to give them money to see it.

  64. kalorama Says:

“other roles went to lesser-known thesps such as Armie Hammer Jr. (Batman)”

Armie Hammer? Junior no less? Really?

    God help us all.

  65. Jason M. Bryant Says:

“Armie Hammer? Junior no less? Really?

    God help us all.”

Oh yeah, guys with ‘Junior’ in their names are always complete wusses. Thus, based on the name alone, we can tell that this guy will be just as wimpy as Louis Gossett Jr.

  66. Evil Twin Says:

It’s amazing that you have an Academy award winning and multiple nominated director/writer/producer leading the thing and people are still screaming disaster. Based on nothing more than a rumored cast list.

Were you all out boycotting Michael Keaton as Batman too? Or perhaps moaning about flames on Optimus Prime?

  67. Andrew Says:

Why use John Stewart? He is a worthless character, while Hal Jordan, DCs greatest character gets the shaft.

  68. kalorama Says:

“Thus, based on the name alone, we can tell that this guy will be just as wimpy as Louis Gossett Jr.”

You can conclude whatever the hell you want. (And clearly you have.) I really don’t care.

I just find it amusing that he’s appended “Junior” to what is almost certainly a made up stage name.

  69. Steve Says:

    DOOOOOOOM!!!!
    wait.
    wait.
    wait.
    wait.
    one more time.
    DOOOOOOOM!!!!
i think it deserves to be said
    one more time.
    DOOOOOOOM!!!!

    DOOOOOOOM!!!!

This movie is going to be SO god damned awesome. Just you wait.

  70. maximumrob Says:

this is interesting, cant say that the cast is that inspiring, but will see what happens,Sorry but I hate Adam Brody awful actor and annoying voice reeeally winey. But to all you bitching fanboys out thereSHUT THE F…K UP! ALREADY! what a bunch of cry babys.Jeeezzz no wondernobody in Hollywwood takes this seriously.it funny how the comic industry is ignoring some great comic writer vets for flavor of the mouth hollywood screen writers but HOLLYWOOD isnt falling all over themselves to hire some of our great writers like MORRISON,BRUBAKER,ELLIS,JOHNS,BUSICK etc. sad waht and inferiorty complex this industry has and only hnors it great when their six feet under. RIP steve Gerber.

  71. JK Parkin Says:

No matter how you feel about the film, there’s no need for personal insults. Comments have been deleted.

    Please knock it off.

  72. Raleign Says:

See, and I have fairly good expectations for this. The concepts behind the script sound great, and the shelving/unshelving makes sense due to the strike. I think you guys are just being nervous. I have a feeling this will be a great film.

And wow - I don’t understand how people can so harshly judge a film that hasn’t even started filming yet. I have no problems with the cast, and everything I’ve heard about the script has been fairly positive. Do people honestly thin they’re intentionally trying to go out and make a bad movie? This isn’t like Catwoman - it sounds like they’re sticking to the basics.

And I don’t think I could think of a better choice for the Flash than Adam Brody. He’s the biggest comic geek in all of Hollywood. He’ll pull it off.

As for the loathsome reaction to the cast - prior to Batman Begins, Superman Returns, and even Superman the Movie, all of the lead actors were basically unknown. The one main high profile casting in a DC film lead was Keaton - and those whocan recall remember that choice was HATED by fans until the film came out, and people quickly shut up.

  73. Emanuel Valente Says:

Hal Jordan is the great GL ever!

I WANT HAL JORDAN IN JLA MOVIE!! =(

    villain… Darkseid! Despero! Starro!

    Cameos… Ray Palmer!

  74. Muhamado Says:

Megan Gale would look super hot in a WW costume.. probably the only reason why I’d watch this movie…

  75. Jake Says:

I wish they would use Hawkgirl in the film so it would reflect the Justice League Animated cast. I always dislike when WW is the only female member of the League. Hawkgirl would rock. I also wouldn’t mind if they used the Martian Manhunter guy from Smallville.

I’d also love cameos from Vic Sage/Question, the Atom and Plastic Man!

  76. SUPERMAN Says:

GEORGE MILLER RULES THIS MOVIE WILL RAWWWWKKKKKK

  77. Roy Says:

Why use John Stewart? He is a worthless character, while Hal Jordan, DCs greatest character gets the shaft.

    Comment by Andrew

Uh…you know that comment makes you sound like a bigot, right? Even though I’m against the making of the film, I don’t think having an all-white cast helps…

  78. Rob Postuma Says:

This movie has to be seen as it’s own beast, rather than as a mix of characters from other films. It worked for the X-Men films, it may work here.

And - Batman or Superman in this film - doesn’t have to have any more effect on their separate films, than the comic JLA has on the different Batman and Superman books ( where they almost appear to be different characters ).

    I hope it works.

  79. Nick Alan Jones Says:

Call me when they have a release date. The “up and down” of this train ride is making me a bit queasy.

  80. nathaniel and amber banton Says:

please try not to make Superman or greenlantern ugly. Dont make anything nasty, make Lex Luthor in this too.

dont make flash be a flirt, why cant we have a good howesome movie. they should have Lex Luthor, Darkseid, and Braniac as the main villians.DONT MAKE WONDER WOMAN UGLY and animate John well

  81. nataberr Says:

Luthor in this too.a good howesome movie. they should have Lex Luthor, Darkseid, and Braniac as the main villians.DONT MAKE WONDER WOMAN UGLY and animate John well
