Chester Gould-Dick Tracy Museum to close

February 25th, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

The Chicago Tribune reports that The Chester Gould-Dick Tracy Museum in Woodstock, Ill., will close in June due to lack of funding.

Interest in the 17-year-old shrine has dwindled since its opening in 1991. In the early years, the museum attracted more than 6,000 visitors annually; last year, just 3,464 people paid the $2 admission fee.

Gould, a Woodstock native, created the hard-boiled detective in 1931.

    Boy, that’s sad news.
I wish it weren’t almost 10 hours away from me or I’d go see it before it closed.

That is definitely sad. If there was only a way to move it to another location or part of a larger museum.

A ray of good news from the article:
“By the end of the year, family members expect the museum to debut on the Internet with a site that will showcase the strip, fan letters and some of Gould’s unpublished work.”

Not the same as seeing it in person, but I’m looking forward to the site.

Out of the article, I love the whole Groundhog Day (movie) side story that played a role in the discussion.

How far is the Dick Tracy Museum from the UP train station?
I would like to take the train to Woodstock see the Museum and eat lunch and then take the train home.
    I live in Des Plaines.
