Add two more names to the ever-expanding cast of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Variety reports that former Lost star Dominic Monaghan will play Barnell — aka Blackwing and Beak — while model-actor Daniel Henney will portray Agent Zero — aka Maverick — a member of the Weapon X program.
Earlier this week Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch and will.i.am were announced as Deadpool, Gambit and Wraith, respectively. They join Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Liev Schreiber (Sabretooth), Danny Huston (William Stryker) and Lynn Collins (Silver Fox).
X-Men Origins: Wolverine, directed by Gavin Hood, will film in New Zealand, Australia and New Orleans. It’s set to open on May 1, 2009.

The more I see the size and diversity of the cast involved in this “Wolverine” movie, the more I’m thinking it will turn out to be shite. Beak? Really?
February 21st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
wow…i thought liev schreiber and ryan reynolds were inspired bits of casting…but this cast is already too big…it’s going to be worse than x3…it’s going to be alot of introductions and no development “hi, im barnell, call me beak” ::beak flys off into battle::
wolverine and his team of sabretooth, deadpool, and MAYBE maverick on some kind of secret mission would be fine…but this is getting out of hand.
February 21st, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Aw, I really liked Beak. That’s cool I guess that he’s going to be in Wolverine…I guess…
…god I’m tired of Wolverine.
February 21st, 2008 at 11:27 pm
Will this be the first time a Grant Morrison created character will appear on the big screen?
I think Beak was created by Grant Morrison. The first I heard of him was New X-Men but up until then I had stopped reading the X-books. Beak could have appeared in fifty consecutive issues of X-Force, X-Factor or X-Pensive Winos for all I know.
February 22nd, 2008 at 12:17 am
Yay! Beak!
All we need now is Ugly John, and we got ourselves an movie!
Oh, and Thunderbolt Ross.
And Nick Fury.
And Tony Stark.
And Shemp Howard.
And Tom Green.
And Andy Sugden.
And Leslie Neilsen as John Diefenbaker.
…what?

Ian: Yeah, Beak was created by Morrison in New X-Men.
I’m already disappointed. It was fine when they said Weapon X characters who had no connections to Wolverine’s past will appear in the movie (Deadpool). I was even cool with the addition of non-Weapon X/Wolverine origin cahracters (Gambit, Blob). But Beak just kills it for me. I’m happy for Monaghan getting a job, but hate the idea of Beak in a Wolverine origin movie.

I don’t see the problem with these additions. If they’re doing a movie about Wolverine being involved in Weapon X, then it makes sense that there are going to be lots of mutants involved that the program is experimenting on. Beak’s not such an established character that he can’t be refit to that purpose, and it drives home the point that, whether he likes to or not, Wolverine always ends up helping that not as powerful as him. Beaks the perfect type of character to make Logan realize that things are wrong, weak mutants are being victimized, and he has to do something about it.
February 22nd, 2008 at 8:35 am
Well, considering I thought it odd that Maverick wasn’t in the last casting annoucement, this serves me right.
February 22nd, 2008 at 8:38 am
I agree but I hope they relax with adding anymore characters or this will turn to crap. here’s to hoping
February 22nd, 2008 at 8:39 am
Just so everyone understands, it’s not Beak. It’s a new character. That has the first name Barnell. And newsarama took that common first name and decided to jump the gun and say that the character in the movie is going to be beak.
February 22nd, 2008 at 8:46 am
I don’t think it will be Beak though. Maybe they’ll use the same name of Barnell but this is not Beak unless I missed something.
“Monaghan will play Barnell, a mysterious character from Wolverine’s past who has the ability to manipulate energy and electricity.”
February 22nd, 2008 at 8:53 am
I’m all for more characters, as long as they continute to use such inspired casting.
Seriously, when it comes to comic book movies I really want my reaction to be “Awww COOL!” instead of “this could be a real Oscar contender.”
So far, I’m incredibly excited for this movie. More so everyday.
February 22nd, 2008 at 8:55 am
Oh fuck me.
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:17 am
Totally agree that a WOLVERINE movie should be a popcorn flick. Lots of cool and fan-geek moments - WITH a plot and decent ending - not a series drama.
Batman Begins - for all it’s seriousness - was really cool for the Who is Ra’s - cool bat tank and on screen moments with Gordon and Fox.
For 100+ minutes - @ $7.50+ I want to escape to something NOT real.
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:18 am
The reports on this movie get worse each and every day.
I am officially going on a media black out and will wait for the trailer
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:58 am
i can’t wait
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:58 am
I’m actually more confused by the casting of Daniel Henney. Agent Zero/Maverick is supposed to be an east german freedom fighter, and he’s being played by an asian man.
I’m fine with diversity, but c’mon, that was the only thing that made Maverick INTERESTING.
February 22nd, 2008 at 11:46 am
They are really stacking the deck here as far as the casting of characters is concerned. Not that I’m the biggest fan of any of these characters, but it is kinda cool.
I’m not sure I understand the issue that people are having with this cast, though. There are complaints about these appearances possibly only being cameos, yet whenever there’s a Spider-Man movie, a bunch of fanboys get on here and say “Oh, why couldn’t there have just been a quick scene with Spidey punching out the Shocker or the Rhino?” ::confused:: You know what? You’ll probably never get a Deadpool movie, or a Beak movie (and it doesn’t even look like this Beak now, anyways), or whomever else we’ve got in this Wolverine flick. It’s either this or nothing. Besides, wasn’t everyone practically begging for Ryan Reynolds to be cast as Deadpool, anyways?
February 22nd, 2008 at 2:13 pm
In yesterday’s press release, didn’t someone make a joke about “Where’s Maverick”? lol This is nuts…I get the sensation of a “Batman and Robin” happening.
February 22nd, 2008 at 2:21 pm
YAY! One step closer to a New Warriors movie!
TWENTIETH!
February 22nd, 2008 at 5:29 pm
1. There was no way that a Wolverine solo movie was ever going to be anything other than crap, just like all Wolverine solo comics after the first mini years ago. This would actually be better if they dropped Wolvie and just did a “third string mutants” flick.
2. While I was initially surprised by all these characters being loaded onto a Wolverine movie, I then realized this was not such a bad thing, as it would dilute the general level of Wolverine-presence in the film.
3. I’m actually quite happy with getting to see characters like Deadpool and Beak, you know, when I see this on DVD much later on, preferably having tricked a friend into renting it. What? In the theatre? As if.
4. Gambit? Nooooooo! Just pray it falls through like it did in X3.
5. Liev Schreiber as Sabretooth? Really? I mean, he’s a fine actor and all, it just seems like perplexing casting.

Hey Ed …
Just a few points
1> Yo obviously don’t care for Wolverine … so breathe in.. breathe out, its okay, we won’t come and evict you if you don’t see it.
2> See answer # 1
3> Its not Beak as has been pointed out above - that was an error on rama’s note (I believe)
4> Okay , you don’t like Gambit either….thats okay
5> According to Schrieber’s website he is going to be a young Stryker and not Sabretooth which I think would fit better….but who knows, I was pleasantly surprised at Jackmans Wolverine - I thought it was going to suck
February 23rd, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Ah, I don’t mind Wolvie all that much, as long as he’s used as a part-of-an-ensemble character and not a solo megastar. I’ve enjoyed plenty of comics with him _in_ them, but I won’t touch any of his solo titles.
Gambit, however, doesn’t just need to be killed off, but retconned into never having existed.
By the way, I’m just giving an opinion here, you’ve really got no basis for the “take a breath” stuff unless I load up on capslocks and multiple exclamation points.
February 24th, 2008 at 7:52 am
Haven’t any of you retarded breain specialists who posted earlier or who are still complaining about hows theres too many characters casted realized that not all of these mutants aren’t going to be real characters at all? Some of these guys are going to simply be either cameo characters or no namers played by actors known by everybody for the sake of getting people to go see this flick. Geez, I’ll bet you guys are the same losers who judge a book by its cover whether it be a novel or a comic book. Don’t knock it til’ ya try it dweebs.
February 24th, 2008 at 8:03 am
Oh, and “Ed” there IS a basis for having things thrown at you such as earlier posts. You said the movie is going to suck, therefore, I must ask, have you seen it yet? Is it any good? I mean, after all, I couldn’t say if a movie sucked or not until it’s been released. You remind me of those idiots who try too hard to stand out by saying Cloverfield sucked before they even saw it (if they even did that is). So why don’t you do us all a favor and continue your negetaive email campaign against James Cameron for killing Jack in Titanic and be done with it okay?
February 24th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
This movie ain’t shite without Fantomex…
February 24th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
@WolvieExpert
You can tell a movie/book/comic is going to suck without having seen it.
For example, you could easily tell Wolverine would suck if saw, Tom Cruise or John Travolta was playing Wolverine. Or if Spider-man was played by Will Smith. Or if Superman was played by Rob Schneider. Mm?
February 24th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
Aaron, I think a Superman movie starring Rob Schneider would easily surpass all of the previous films. I imagine it would be incredible!
February 24th, 2008 at 8:21 pm
Wolvie eXpert:
I’ve stood up elsewhere against people prejudging Cloverfield and other things. Don’t make assumptions about people you don’t know. Where does that Cameron thing even come from?
In this case, I have a very solid basis for being able to determine that this will suck: it’s a Wolverine solo movie. Read what I said above about Wolvie in an ensemble like the X-Men vs. solo. No Wolvie solo comic book series since the first mini has been any damn good at all. There’s an infinitismal chance that a movie could escape the pressures of history and be OK, but the chance is something like a 0.00001% possibility.
Also, take an English class.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Will Smith is Spiderman?
Gettin Jiggy wit It!
February 25th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
And thank god, somebody mentioned the butchered grammar going down here. I’ve seen better structured grammar on Sprnger.
February 25th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
The more I hear about the “solo” Wolvie movie, the more sucky it sounds. They’re watering down what needs to be a foundation movie building on Wolvie primarily and then later the sequels can build on rounding out a wider view of mutant-kind. Hopefully these characters will still allow the main character, Logan, to be prominently featured. A little Deadpool will go a long way and the other characters are hopefully cameos.
February 25th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
warm up the ski-boat, because Wolverine is on the brink of jumping the shark-or has that already happened while I was watching the Spider-Man franchise spiral downward?
March 6th, 2008 at 7:35 am
Good lord comic fans are a pretentious picky lot. Could you all just at least try to enjoy it since we all know as much as you bitch and moan, you’re still all going to go pay to see it. Sheesh.
