The most Wonder-ful time of the year

WonderCon returns to the San Francisco Moscone Center this weekend, along with special guests Jim Lee, Sergio Aragonés, Bill Willingham, Kurt Busiek, Brian Wood, Becky Cloonan, Bruce Timm, Tim Sale, Darwyn Cooke, David Mack and many, many more. In addition, Hollywood makes the long trek up the 101, bringing Steve Carell, David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Chris Carter, Jon Favreau, Kristen Bell and James McAvoy, among others, to the Bay Area to promote their latest movies.

The complete schedule of events is available. Some thoughts and observations:

–DC, BOOM!, TokyoPop, Image, Dark Horse and SLG all have panels to share the latest news and answer questions; Marvel, however, isn’t coming.
–On Friday night, Gahan Wilson will be on hand for a screening of Gahan Wilson: Born Dead Still Weird, a new documentary about Wilson.
–Becky Cloonan and Brian Wood are scheduled for spotlight panels on Friday, but Saturday brings a panel featuring both of them AND an exclusive announcement. What could it be? A Demo TV show? A new Vertigo series from the duo? Guess we’ll find out Saturday.
–The Gumby comics crew, who have a panel on Saturday, were recently profiled in the Contra Costa Times.
–There’s a comics retailing panel on Sunday featuring folks from SecretHeadquarters Comics and Atlantis Fantasyworld, two awesome California comic shops. I haven’t been to the other two shops represented at the panel, but look forward to, knowing they’re on a panel like this.
–Some of the folks from Jericho and the Terminator TV series will be at the show as well, including Brian Austin Green. Heh. How can you not love a show where David Silver is Kyle Reese’s brother?
–New animation premieres … on Saturday, fans can check out the first episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man. And on both Saturday and Sunday, fans can check out Justice League: The New Frontier. There’s also supposed to be some new WALL•E footage at the Disney panel on Saturday.
–The Artist Alley listing reveals a lot of other creators who will be at the show, including Matt Wagner, Mike Mignola, Art Adams, Brent Anderson, J. Scott Campbell, Jim Mahfood and many more.
–Isotope Comics will host a couple of parties during the weekend, with Ben Templesmith and Antony Johnston on Friday and Darwyn Cooke, J. Bone and David Bullock on Saturday.

I’ll be reporting on some panels for the mothership this weekend and most likely will blog from the con, so stop by to see what’s going on in San Francisco.

I need to check out this con next year. After three years of San Diego I’m switching up for New York this year.

  2. Great White Snark Says:

I’ll be there, JK. I’ll be the one asking for photographs from costumed conventioneers and fawning over Kristen Bell at the Forgetting Sarah Marshall panel. Have fun.

Has Marvel ever come to WonderCon? In the three years that I’ve gone, they haven’t been there.
