USA Today looks briefly at the debut of the red Hulk in this week’s Hulk #2.

“I wanted to bring a danger back to the book,” writer Jeph Loeb says. “The Red Hulk is the kind of Hulk we haven’t seen before — a thinking, calculating, brutal weapon-toting kind of Hulk. … Everything the Green Hulk isn’t, the Red Hulk is.”

–Jeph Loeb says, “The Red Hulk is the kind of Hulk we haven’t seen before — a thinking, calculating, brutal weapon-toting kind of Hulk. … Everything the Green Hulk isn’t, the Red Hulk is.”

Isn’t that the description of the Grey Hulk?

  2. Darthphere Says:

It would actually be a mixture of Grey Hulk, Mr. Fix It and Maestro.

  3. Pedro Bouça Says:

“Everything the Green Hulk isn’t, the Red Hulk is.”

    Boring?

    Best,
    Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

  4. ResIpsa Says:

So, does Loeb or his editor have no knowledge of any of PAD’s run…?

  5. The ECoyleomist Says:

“The Red Hulk is the kind of Hulk we haven’t seen before — a thinking, calculating, brutal weapon-toting kind of Hulk”

Alright, let’s face it: Jeph Loeb has never had an original idea in his head in his life.

  7. Beheader Says:

“So, does Loeb or his editor have no knowledge of any of PAD’s run…?”

That’s what I was thinking. For a quite some time Hulk had Banner’s intellect and was known to pick up a gun under PAD’s writing.

Then again, I wondered if Loeb actually read The Ultimates before he started writing it.

  8. buttler Says:

Also, the Yellow Hulk embodies fear, the Violet Hulk represents love, the Orange Hulk is all about greed, the Indigo Hulk advocates compassion, and the Blue Hulk brings hope.

  9. Jason Truong Says:

    bring me the Alpha Hulk!

  10. OM Says:

…Oh give us a break, kids. The Red Hulk is a Skrull - the color change is to throw us off.

  11. Rob Herfenflurfer Says:

Like USA Today, the Red Hulk is lame and not worth reading.

  12. pedro Says:

Issues 3 and 4 have already been rescheduled and will be over 1 month late. LAME!

  13. Joe Lawler Says:

I have an idea for a Superman unlike any the world has ever seen. He’ll be black, a woman and live under water.

I owe Seinfeld for part of that joke.

  14. Sam Says:

I don’t care what anyone says, I liked the first issue a bunch and I can’t wait for Wednesday!

Oh, and does anyone have a link confirming this delay that Pedro talks about? Thanks!

  15. Marc Says:

Loeb says. “There is no other Hulk book.”

When the hell is Son of Hulk coming out. And Sam go to Marvel.com catalogue section and you can see how much the book is going to be delayed considring its supposed to be monthly and theres no book in March.

  16. Daniel Says:

That’s exactly the kind of Hulk we saw in World War Hulk!

  17. Sam Says:

    I certainly shall. Thanks!

  18. AUTOVTAIM Says:

Oh pliiiz!Stop with all those bulls#@*ts!
    We want PAD back!
His Hulk was one of the best Marvel stuff ever!
Bring him back, with total freedom and a good artist and e will kick your @$$!!!!
    P.S.WWH SUUUUCKS!!!!!

  19. Peter David Says:

Personally I like what’s being done in the current “red Hulk” book. And yeah, my assumption is that Jeph simply didn’t read those issues of my run. Then again, those were a long time ago and not especially relevant to what’s going on right now.

    PAD

  20. Feb Says:

“Everything the Green Hulk isn’t, the Red Hulk is.”

A woman? Puerto Rican? Transgender? Albino? An AIDS victim? A pacifist?

Loeb certainly doesn’t have a good grasp of hyperbole.

  21. albert Says:

Puerto Rican? I thought that was the new Cap?

  22. MK. III Says:

Like it or not PAD (and I assume you would like it because it essentially means we love your writing and want to give you soft huggles) many of us consider your Hulk stuff the high standard to measure others work against. Seeing similar ideas retreaded in a less satisfying fashion would make us sad pandas so here’s hoping the red hulk has something new to say that doesn’t make us want tojust go and read our old PAD Hulk issues instead and save our money.

  23. Quentin Beck Says:

Well, I read the first issue. It may actually have a discernable plot. Yay?

  24. B|ackPanther Says:

To bad its written badly, but it is only the first issue.

  25. steviecool Says:

I think it’s cool that PAD supports others, but wow, that’s above and beyond to support someone who hasn’t read the top-tier versions of Hulk. I have liked a lot of Loeb’s stuff, but it’s a shame that sort of quote takes away from the Red Hulk storyline.

  26. The ECoyleomist Says:

The trouble is, even if Loeb didn’t read PAD’s work (and I agree, there’s no reason why he should) it’s still bizarre to assert “it’s a cold calculating Hulk that uses weapons!” after Planet Hulk and WWH.

  27. Komikfan Says:

Loeb’s writing of late has been really terrible. I couldn’t even bring myself to by a single issue of Ultimates Vol. 3 after what he did to it. I miss Millar and Hitch dearly; they really have their work cut out for them when they come back (and they have said they do want to come back some day).

As for this new Hulk book…well…I wouldn’t give it any awards, but I’m willing to finish the first arc before I pass judgment. Besides, I love McGuinness’ art.

But it is kind of insulting how Loeb implies he was the first writer to think up a cunning, calculating Hulk.

  28. Komikfan Says:

It’s as though Loeb thinks that all of the 1980s and 1990s Marvel lore, as well as the stuff that happened in time that he was over at DC from 2003 to 2006 didn’t happen or something like that.

  29. ejulp Says:

Loeb was just speaking to a more general audience of non comic kids…I’m sure he’s familiar with whats come before.

Whatever though, at least I got the Inc. Herc. out of this shuffle…dun’ really care about Loeb, and am Hulked out by Pak’s excellent run.

  30. Predabot Says:

RED. HUUUUULK!! >>:)) I love this concept. And I have an excellent theory on who he is, that no-one’s touted online as of yet. ^^

Eagerly picking up next issue. :)

  31. Sam Says:

It’s great to see Mr. David is on our side. I just recently started picking up his Hulk work, and he’s right.

What happened 10 and 20 years ago isn’t really relevant to what’s going on right now, so it’s not a big deal. Unless the Red Hulk wears a suit and goes by Joe Fixit?

My point exactly. But if you’re not interested, just don’t read it.

Don’t make ad hominem attacks on Loeb or any of the people that like him and his work. That’s only fair.

  32. Vij Says:

It’s only been one issue. We should give it a least two or three before completely bashing it. I mean, I hated the concept of Brand New Day, but I at least gave it a shot.

  33. Feb Says:

Vij, how many comics must one read before they can judge them?

  34. Ken B. Says:

I like how Loeb speaks about the Hulk to general non-comic readers, and then the same day it’s discovered the book is delayed.

    Ha freaking ha.

  35. AUTOVTAIM Says:

Don’t misunderstanding me.I’m a big fan of Loeb’s works.I love his Bat-Halloween tales, and i judged him very brave when he become Awesome co-chief.But i think he misses his touch in the last3/4years,too.He writes books for top artists, but he doesn’t built the story. His best work in those years is the3pages story with Sale in Superman/Batman Secret Files,in2003.
Sorry to say it but his recent stuff has a videogame plot.
    I WANT PAD BACK!!!
    His Hulk is an evergreen(everGREEN)milestone!
    He made me laugh,and cry,and think…

  36. AUTOVTAIM Says:

PAD’s works is great’cause he used a green monster to speak about psychoanalisys, death, capital punishment, love, war, anger, child abuse…
Hulk, his world, and his anger was a metaphore to explore the human condition.
Now we have a stupid green skunk who fight,smash,destroy,etc.etc.
OH CRAPOLA!We have a simil The gladiator storyline,a boring70’s plot, then revange, fight and the same soup.
I know that Marvel must offers a book also for non comic readers, but in this way Quesada makes the same mistakes of Harras…

  37. James Says:

Very classy of Peter David to step up and comment favorably on the Red Hulk and the comparisons to his run. I’m also getting the impression that in execution this is going to be a very different Hulk. Seems a bit more malevolent to me.

  38. Mig-EL Says:

I want to start off by saying “Hey fanboy\crybabies before you guys comment (an I use the term loosely) on anything…find your spell-check button! All the people that had negative comments about the “new” Hulk story and then miss spell simple words, makes anyone reading your comments…question your literacy. How would you guys know good story…when you’re not able to read in the first place? Anyone that goes on message boards or writes letter pages (even though there aren’t that many comics that have a letters page) and complain all the time. I have one question for these fanboy\crybabies. How the heck can these people say they care about the comic industry? All they’re doing is making people not want to buy comics. The easiest way to express dislike towards a book is simple…DON’T BUY THE BOOK!!! People should be leaving comments like “…if you liked this book try…” A simple way to show dislike for a book without chasing people away is say”… if you didn’t this book try…” all negativity does is chase potential or existing fans away. An if you(the reader of this ramble) still think there’s nothing “good” on the racks, here’s a solution…GO AN F’N MAKE A “GOOD” COMIC!

  39. Duke Jupiter Says:

Read the new issue today. A whole lotta style and not a lotta substance.

  40. AUTOVTAIM Says:

    I agree with Duke.
The books written by Loeb have great art but not a solid story.
This isn’t Marvel Style but Image(of the first years ) Style.
Loeb can counts on an all star crew but we can can’t on his verve.
    I REPEAT:I was a Loeb fan,so i hope this is a period.

  41. Alec Says:

    Dear Mig-EL,
Puncuation and grammar should fall into the same bucket as spelling. Don’t criticize spelling, and then incorrectly spell the word “MISSPELL”! PWNED!

    Love,
    Alec

  42. John Says:

First and foremost let me say that I do think that Peter David is a true voice or perhaps, no disrespect to Stan Lee or Jack Kirby, but a founding father to the Hulk mythos. I also happen to be a huge fan of Jeph Loeb and couldn’t be more excited that he is working on a Hulk series. Here’s the thing, I know that there are some writers that we don’t ever want to have them go or leave a series, because they, as we feel are the only ones that truly know how to tell the story relating to the series, but we have to realize, the writers have other interests and they get assigned to other projects, that’s just life along with everything else. Maybe Jeph Loeb didn’t look at the grey Hulk run that Peter David had, but it doesn’t necessary mean that just because the red Hulk has some similarities to the grey Hulk doesn’t mean that he’s copying or stealing ideas from Peter David, because there’s always a different approach, new ideas to go about it and that might very well be the case here. I think that we should just wait and see what Jeph Loeb reveals in his Hulk book, he’s one of the best storytellers ever, I would just hope that the rest of you would have alittle more trust and faith in him is all. Just my opinion is all.

  43. John Says:

Jeph Loeb is known for pushing the envelope further and when you have a statement that says, what the green Hulk isn’t, the red Hulk is, that’s bigger then words, now it’s about seeing if he could prove it. I think alot of fans feel that this isn’t the same Jeph Loeb that they are used to, they feel as though he can’t fill in the shoes of Stan Lee or Peter David, but you have to admire that at least he is giving it a shot. I haven’t picked up Hulk #2 yet, but I can’t wait to see it and I look foward to all the issues Jeph Loeb is willing to put forth with the Hulk. Can red surpass grey or green, we’ll all find out sooner or later.

I wanted to share my idea about who the red Hulk might be.

In the back of my mind I still want to hold on to the idea that the red Hulk could be a hybrid, a new Hulk that is a mixture of Hulk and the Sentry, without Bruce Banner or Robert Renolds.

There’s big talks about the Skrull and right off the bat there were talks about the red Hulk being a Skrull, but I think when they have the green Hulk take on the red Hulk, somehow someway, I think the green Hulk will end up being a Skrull instead. I think at the end of World War Hulk # 5, when the red cannon blast reverted Hulk back into Bruce Banner, I think it took away the Hulk essance so to speak, unknown where it went, but somehow the Hulk essence became a red Hulk and took everything that Bruce Banner was ever mad at or hated and is now taking it out on anyone or anything that comes his way.
