I have it on my TiVo and haven’t watch it yet myself, but what did you think of Black Canary’s appearance on Smallville last night?

I could take or leave the actual plot of “Siren,” where Dinah is a mercenary who stops criminals out of an unbending sense of justice for no good reason that’s ever explained, and who’s change of heart is equally flimsy. There were also actually precious few Green Arrow/Black Canary in-jokes here, though the reference to Superman: The Movie was hilarious.
BUT, that they got the little yellow stripes on the gloves and boots, a la Dinah’s Birds of Prey costume, made me happy to no end. It’s the little things.

I thought is was a pretty bad episode, and I say this as a huge fan of the show, warts and all. The costume was good, and the resolution with Oliver and Lois was fantastic, but shoehorning Lana into the plot was really rather banal.

I was nervous about the revamped status quo and look of Black Canary, and while the face paint did look a bit ridiculous and the mercenary bit seemed a tad easily discarded, I enjoyed the actress who played her–and Justin Hartley’s return as Green Arrow–so much that I’d be down to see more.
As a side note, what a crazy JLA line-up the Smallville world has: Green Arrow, Aquaman, Impulse, Cyborg & Black Canary with Superman and sorta-Oracle as reserve members. That’s funky.

How is this show still on? Can someone please tell me? This episode along with the other episodes that had cameos by DC characters was horrible.

It was kind of stupid; the makeup face was dumb (but a good switch from a mask), and her super-acrobatics were not only a lame addition to the character, but they were really poorly executed.

Smallville is, at this point, nonsensical dreck. That people still manage to be surprised to learn this after many seasons of suckage amazes me.

I have never watched an entire episode and I have no reason to. I loved the initial premise — a sort-of real-world Superboy without costumes and nonsense. But the integration of DC superheroes IN COSTUMES in the last few seasons seems to kill the mood of the show altogether. I now have NO reason to care. Blech.

I thought the episode was pretty good, with more hits than misses. Yes, I did think the facepaint took away more than it gave, and some of the jumps were a little off, but overall, I think they did a spot on job with the rest of it. I also liked that they gave her short blonde hair and a black wig, reversing what was done in the book by dinah’s mom (long blonde wig, short black hair). I agree, there weren’t as many in jokes as I would have liked (a reference to a guy named conner would have been nice, is all I’m saying), but then I’m a nerd, so there are never enough in jokes. I liked the actress, and I’m looking forward to seeing more.

It wasn’t as terrible as I thought it’d be, but the face paint still was ridiculous. As an episode in the larger series, it sort of just treaded water.

It made me sad.

I watched LOST instead.

She looks like she escaped from a bad 1980’s music video.

The best part for me was the insane “Gun Kata” fight between Lex and Green Arrow. Clearly, someone watched “Equilibrium” before setting up the VFX for this episode. And when did Lex become bad ass enough to get all ninja on Ollie like that?
Beyond that, it wasn’t bad. Alaina Huffman did a fine job, though her motives and switch of allegiance were more than a little contrived. They should’ve just introduced her as a hero and built conflict that way. I also can’t believe that Black Canary’s sonic scream is enough to clown Superman, a guy with Eardrums of Steel.
Smallville is what it is. If you go into it understanding that it’s a radically different continuity with different interpretations of the characters (Lana as a Machiavellian power broker ex-wife of Lex, for example), you can enjoy it.

I agree the “Gun Kata” stuff left with a WTF moment. That and it went on 30 seconds TOO long.
And when did Lex get all Hong Kong Fui?
Overall - the BC was really NOT representative of who she should be - but I guess as an introduction of what she could ‘become’ it was - well - sorta ok.
The Clana thing is so so so so so so so so damn old now - just drop her off a bridge or something…

She, from the costume to the actress’ face itself…looks just like a Frank Miller drawing.
February 10th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
“It made me sad.”
So it was a typical episode of Smallville.
February 10th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Better than an average episode.
Black Canary was OK - and I thought the actress looked totally different with the brunette wig - so like Sydney Bristow, I think a wig does a better job as a disguise than a man’s pair of glasses anyday.
Did anyone else think they cast her because when she opened her mouth it was quite big?
I really like how GA has fit into the series, of course if you picture him as Bruce Wayne it would be even cooler.
Also agree on the WTF Gun-Fu stuff with Lex…but that typical slow-mo scene with the 4 of them shooting/throwing always rocks and I never get sick of it…just imagine what a Flash TV show would look like today.
And I still say Erica Durance is playing the BEST Lois Lane ever. I love Margot Kidder but always thought that Lois was hotter, but not so mean like Terri Hatcher.
Although I am sure I am in the minority, any time the mass world gets invited to our party, no matter how wrong the end result is, I’m still happy that people are being introduced to characters like Black Canary, Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter through this show.
Is this the last season? And how many more episodes before this season is over because of the strike?
