R.I.P. Bob Callahan

The Smithsonian Book of Comic Book Stories

I was waiting to see if there were any sort of official obituary announcement, but since none seems to be forthcoming, I’ll go ahead and post this: According to a couple of blog posts, writer and editor Bob Callahan passed away in San Francisco last week.

Callahan was one of those important “behind the scenes” figures in the development of the alt-comix movement over the past fifteen years or so. He’s probably best known for editing the Neon Lit line that included David Mazzuchelli’s acclaimed adaptation of Paul Auster’s City of Glass (Callahan also wrote the Neon Lit adaptation of Barry Gifford’s Perdita Durango). He also edited the 1991 anthology, The New Comics, and, more recently, The New Smithsonian Book of Comic Book Stories: From Crumb to Clowes. In addition to that, he worked with underground cartoonist Spain on the Dark Hotel Webcomic anthology that Salon ran back before we called those type of things Webcomics.
Tom Spurgeon has a nice, concise memorial up with more details and links. Eddie Campbell, meanwhile, reminisces about him on his blog.
