Did you get your hotel room?

San Diego madness begins …

Edit: Looks like the system is starting to move again … or at least isn’t giving error messages anymore.

Managed to book mine after veeerrrryyyy slow page loads.

    Now to find a flight…

The site died on me after 55 minutes of trying to get stuff to load, right in the middle of verifying my credit card. Amazingly though, an hour and a half after the hotels became available and after everything crashed and started up again, I got the same room in the same hotel I tried for earlier. And I got it in 3 minutes! This year’s experience is definitely a memorable one for me, and by far the worst I’ve ever seen it.

I wonder why more people don’t book through internet travel services like Orbitz, etc. I’ve been to the Con three times and have found some great (albeit basic) rooms very easily and extremely cheap ($40-$60 per night). No, and they weren’t in Crime Alley. Yeah, for people who want a room two blocks away, or want to “party with the pros” may want the high demand rooms…but man, the solution is right there for people to take.

Yeah, that’s a good point, Mark … there are other alternatives to the SDCC system and a lot more hotels in the area than what’s on their list. But if you do want to be in one of those close hotels, they offer some nice discounts.

(For the record, I already had a hotel room, not to mention an aunt on Coronado Island who I could have stayed with … but you can’t beat being a stone’s throw from the convention center when you’re trekking back and forth all week).

I tried to get pages to load for nearly an hour, but finally got through by phone. Luckily, I got through by phone was surprised to get my 2nd choice hotel. I’ve tried the other sites to book rooms in the past and they are prohibitively expensive, particularly when you factor in a rental car, cab fare, and or parking. This is the way to go for me. Last year I got a room in a hotel off of the shuttle line initially, but called about 6 weeks before the con and got a great room – albeit expensive, on the shuttle line. This time I’m both on the shuttle and only 9 blocks away AND paying $30 a night less than last year so I’m happy.
