Can’t Wait for Wednesday

February 5th, 2008

Can't Wait For Wednesday!

The first Wednesday in February feels a little light on the superhero front. We get another installment of the weekly Countdown to Final Crisis (now in the home stretch) and the almost-weekly Amazing Spider-Man, the return of Alan Davis’ ClanDestine, and the second issue of the enjoyable Teen Titans: Year One, but otherwise there’s not much of note happening on the capes-and-tights front.

That’s okay, though, there’s plenty going on elsewhere: Brian Selznick’s award-winning The Invention of Hugo Cabret finally arrives in the direct market, serious 30 Days of Night fans get a hardcover omnibus edition, SLG Publishing rolls out two new titles, The Boys starts a new storyline, and, in Ral Ω Grad, a teen boy fights monsters and squeezes boobies.

To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.

Crickets #2

Chris’ pick of the week: Crickets #2

If he were to only serve as the editor of Kramer’s Ergot, Sammy Harkham would have his place in alt-comics history assured. But the fact is, he’s a noteworthy cartoonist in his own right, as 2005’s Poor Sailor and last year’s debut of his series Crickets showed. That issue combined humor and tragedy in the ongoing story of a wounded, seemingly immortal man and his mute Golem. I’m eager to see how that tale develops and also in what other ways Harkham chooses to develop his considerable talent.

Kevin’s pick of the week:
Abe Sapien: The Drowning #1 (of 5)

Abe Sapien: The Drowning #1

I’ve been impressed with how consistently good the B.P.R.D. miniseries have been, so much so that it’s difficult to choose a favorite. However, I get the feeling this five-issue spinoff may end up being the winner. It has a lot going for it: First, it stars one of my favorite characters, Abe Sapien. Second, it’s written solely by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola. And third, it features art by Jason Shawn Alexander, whose stunning work lifted otherwise so-so series like Damn Nation and The Secret. You can see an all-too-brief preview of this first issue here.

Blood +, Vol. 1

Kevin: A sequel to the popular Blood: The Last Vampire anime, Asuka Katsura’s manga series picks up several decades after the events of the film. Plagued by nightmares, amnesiac high school student Saya Otonashi begins to discover her submerged powers — just in time to battle shape-shifting, blood-craving creatures called Chiropterans. The plot seems kind of cookie-cutter, but Katsura’s art is sure pretty.

Diana Prince: Wonder Woman, Vol. 1

Diana Prince: Wonder Woman, Vol. 1

Chris: I’m probably wrong about this (I usually am) but I believe this collects a series of WW stories from the 1970s where they felt the character needed a hip, modern update, ditched the costume and the super-powers, and tried to turn her into a Diana Rigg type secret agent. I don’t think anyone’s ever talked about it in glowing terms, but you can call me curious to say the least.

Incognegro hardcover

Chris: Continuing their “once and done” hardcover format, this graphic novel by Mat Johnson and Warren Pleece deals with a black reporter who is able to “pass” as white, giving him the ability to report on lynchings and other hate crimes in the South. As hooks go, it’s an admittedly compelling one, but I could just as easily see the book becoming all concept, with little in the way of characters or plot. I just got my review copy in the mail today, so I figure I’ll find out soon enough.

Northlanders #3
Omega: The Unknown #5 (of 10)

Chris: I am still reading these, yes. How about you?

Scalped, Vol. 2

Scalped #14
Scalped, Vol. 2: Casino Boogie

Kevin: Here’s one of those series that’s truly as good as everyone says it is. Let’s hope all of the positive buzz translates to higher sales.

Swan, Vol. 12

Chris: If you can set aside the romantic melodrama, this is a beautiful series, full of lush, stunning compositions and layouts that floor me. Koyoko Ariyoshi is a genius.

Teen Titans: Year One #2 (of 6)

Kevin: Although some timeline/continuity purists may be a little put off by this miniseries, I enjoyed the first issue immensely. Amy Wolfram, who wrote for the animated series, obviously knows her franchise history, basing her retelling of the team’s beginnings on the “secret origin” from Teen Titans #53 (from 1978), and including an Easter egg like the band The Flips, who appeared in Showcase #59 (from 1965). This issue focuses on Karl Kerschl’s redesigned Aqualad, who also receives a personality tweaking, and brings Speedy into play as the sidekicks try to determine why their mentors have gone rogue.

Albert and the Others

Albert and the Others

Chris: As with Aline and the Others, this is a collection of short, wordless gag strips by Guy Delisle (Pyongyang) focusing on his background in animation and more humorous, cartoony style. The never-ending battle of the sexes is the basic theme here.

The Boys #15

Chris: Beginning a new story arc that, I hope, will get the ball rolling a bit more on the larger themes of the series.

The Complete 30 Days of Night Trilogy hardcover

Kevin: I was about to scoff at the $100 price tag, but now that I look at it, that may not be such a bad deal: This collects the first three franchise miniseries — 30 Days of Night, Dark Days and Return to Barrow — in a numbered hardcover, signed by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith. Still, it probably only appeals to serious 30 Days fans.

Ubu Bubu #1

Contraband
Ubu Bubu #1

Kevin: This week sees two very different offerings from SLG Publishing. The first, Contraband, is a graphic novel by Thomas Behe and Phil Elliott about a near-future “citizen journalist” named Toby who tries to document an underground movement devoted to capturing acts of violence on their camera phones. When his efforts are discovered by a cell-phone channel called Contraband, Toby’s forced to work for them. (You can read a preview here.)

The second title is the debut issue of Jamie Smart’s (Bear) adorable-yet-slightly terrifying miniseries, Ubu Bubu, about an ancient demon intent on destroying Earth who possesses the body of a cute lil’ kitten. (You can read a preview here.)

Gyakushu, Vol. 2

Gyakushu, Vol. 2

Kevin: The second volume of Dan Hipp’s bloody swords-and-revenge saga was almost my pick of the week. I don’t know, maybe it should’ve been. What I do know is that Hipp’s work, here and on The Amazing Joy Buzzards, just explodes with excitement and energy. It’s virtually impossible not to enjoy it.

Hotwire Comics, Vol. 2

Chris: Set up as a deliberate contrast to the literary stylings of anthologies of Mome, Hotwire is a decidedly in-your-face anthology, the kind they used to do back in the good old ’80s, before comics got all high-falutin’ and artsy-fartsy. This new volume contains work by Ivan Brunetti (in Haw mode), Mary Fleener (remember her?), David Lasky, Bob Sikoryak, Sam Henderson, Michael Kupperman, Craig Yoe and more. As with the anthologies of yesteryear it’s a bit of a hit or miss affair, but if you’re sick of compilations that try to be all sweetness and light, this might cleanse your palette nicely.

I Never Liked You

I Never Liked You (new printing)
It’s A Good Life If You Don’t Weaken (new printing)

Chris: Two classic D&Q titles, one by Chester Brown, the other by Seth, see new life this week. Of the two, I think I like Brown’s stark, wrenching memoir of his emotionally withdrawn adolescence over Seth’s fictional attempts to track down an obscure New Yorker cartoonist. But only just.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Chris: The Caldecott-winning hybrid novel/graphic novel by Brian Selznick arrives in comic shops this week.

Krazy & Ignatz, 1941-1942: A Ragout of Raspberries

Chris: If you’re not reading these books by this point I really don’t know what to tell you. It’s one of the finest works of art ever to come through the comics medium’s saloon doors, though its obtuse enough in its language and structure to put off those expecting something a bit more traditional as far as comic strip fare goes. If it helps at all, this new volume contains some of my favorite Herriman works ever. And his color work is sumptuous. Of course, I could have easily said that about the last volume as well.

Ral Ω Grad, Vol. 1

Ral Ω Grad, Vol. 1

Kevin: I really, really wanted to enjoy this shonen fantasy, the follow-up by renowned Death Note artist Takeshi Obata. And I did like his detailed art (though not as much as I did on the thriller). But Tsuneo Takano’s story — one incredibly distracting character “quirk,” in particular — is another matter entirely. Fifteen-year-old Ral has been imprisoned in darkness since shortly after birth in hopes of keeping his powerful Shadow dragon, Grad, contained. His only human contact has been the voice of his tutor Mio. When their quasi-medieval kingdom is attacked by an army of Shadow creatures, Mio convinces Lord Roy — he’s Ral’s father — that his son and the Shadow dragon are their only hope. Ral is released, promptly kills the father who imprisoned him … and then rips open Mio’s dress so he can squeeze his tutor’s breasts. You see, he’s never laid eyes on breasts, so he must squeeze them. Again and again and again. Ral and Grad defeat the creatures, and then the boy ends up in his tutor’s bed … then in his own bed with two girls … and then in a bath with a half-dozen other girls, whose breasts he fondles for good measure. When he’s not fighting Shadows, or squeezing breasts, he’s talking about breasts — excuse me, “boobies” or “titties” — or fighting for a chance to squeeze them. Maybe this really is (heterosexual) teen-boy fantasy: to be an insanely powerful savior, unfettered by parents, and with an endless supply of boobies at your disposal. If that’s the case, this title should rocket up the charts.

We get the finale of “The Good Prince” at last in Fables. This is the first story arc in the series that didn’t really do it for me, but Willingham still has enough going right that it could all come together.

Detective is by Dini this month, so it’s bound to be good. Likewise Buffy by Joss.

“Diana Prince: Wonder Woman, Vol. 1…I don’t think anyone’s ever talked about it in glowing terms, but you can call me curious to say the least”

How things change, when this came out - the argument was whether this was the best WW of all time, or just the past 20 years…

Not excited about the return of Scud? Come on!
