I don’t know. I think there’s a fun action to be had out of the comic, but when you strip it down like they do it comes off bland.

  2. Lucas Siegel Says:

You know, I really feel like they’re underestimating the story’s selling power. They get a little bit more towards what it actually is about with this one, but really, if I hadn’t read the book, I’d know virtually nil of what the hell this movie is about. These have not been good trailers thus far; I’m really disappointed with the editing. I hope that doesn’t carry over into the movie.

  3. Jim Says:

The first time I saw the trailer I thought it looked ok, then when I saw it at the cinema I realised just how bad and how far away from the book this really is.

I don’t really see the point in paying for the rights to something to then totally change the story.

But, if they keep the ending of the book all will be forgiven ;-)

I’m surprised how good this looks. The comic was a bit ridiculous (e.g. the guy made of crap) but worked well enough for the medium.

Millar’s initial idea behind Wanted was supposed to be for a non-superhero book so this is one of the few times hollywood made the right call and pulled out what just doesn’t work (e.g. yet again, the guy made of crap).

  5. adam Says:

Apparently, the scripting began when Millar finished the first issue, so all they had to work with was the first issue.

  6. Dave Says:

Yes Lucas, Hollywood sure is underestimating the selling power of a power-trip fantasy about a mass-murdering serial rapist who not only goes unpunished for his crimes, but also devotes the ending to an extended monologue about his contempt for those in the audience who didn’t wake up one day and decide to indiscriminately rape and murder to make their lives more interesting.

Wow, I can see Middle America just lining up around the block for that one. It’d be bigger than Pirates of the Caribbean and The Matrix COMBINED.

Why buy the rights to a story you dont have any intetion of using? It seems to be a waste of money and it takes away the possibility of somebody (unlikely as it is) making a real adaption.

  8. Hebime Says:

The story of Wanted as written was of interest only to us, the comic book fans who read this stuff and have a frame of reference for what Millar was trying to subvert.

Now, whether or not you like it is a separate question, but the story as written was unfilmable.

The only way to do Wanted justice would be to make it the third film in a trilogy, with the 1st two about the now dead super heroes. And I tell ya nobody would find that joke very funny.

This might not suck. But than again its being directed by the guy who birthed that GODAWFUL Nightwatch series. guh.

  9. Zeitgeist Says:

I didnt like Wanted, i thought it was the comic version of Torture Porn, i just think its stupid to buy the license and then take out everything that makes it unique.

  10. Jason M. Bryant Says:

It is a reasonable point. If the movie really is so different from the book as to be unrecognisable, then they could have made a few cosmetic changes and not bothered with the rights issue.

  11. Lucas Siegel Says:

    Dave,
Yes, exactly. Have you watched the news lately? Make it dark, make it a satire on the horrors mankind accepts and is even excited by, and it’ll get a lot more viewings than a pretty standard action flick. Right now, based on these trailers, it’s a standard action flick.
I’m not saying anyone should support the actions portrayed in the book, but you’re kidding yourself if you don’t think everything you so crassly put in your post sells.

  12. DaVeO Says:

Adam, don’t tell me you actually believe that they only had the first issue to work with.

  13. Kyle Says:

I have to echo the sentiment that I hope it still end with “THIS IS MY FACE WHILE I’M F***ING YOU IN THE ***.”

  14. Johnny.Blaze Says:

F this. Where’s the new Iron man trailer!!!??

  15. JK Parkin Says:

    Top of the page, dude.

  16. RT Says:

I remember seeing something from Millar where he said that the movie is closer to his original vision of the story than the comic, which sounds believable because I believe the studio bought the rights before the book was released.

I thought the core point of the story, though, wasn’t supervillains running the world, so much as it was about what happens when a repressed, spineless loser discovers that he has the power to do whatever he ‘wanted.’ Hopefully the movie will address that concept in a way that doesn’t involve the main character becoming a serial rapist (and, of course, hopefully the movie will be good).

  17. BOb Says:

I’ve never read Wanted. A book about serial rapists who never get punished.

Wait, are you sure the book isn’t about HOLLYWOOD itself?

    :)

  18. Norro Says:

I just miss Rictus. How can you beat line like “I dont f&@k sheep. I make love to them.” or the act of roasting your enemies.

  19. Adam D. Kline Says:

RT’s obviously on his fourth cup of the Millar Kool-Aid.

  20. RT Says:

    hey, it’s delicious.
