Punisher: War Zone

Lexi Alexander, the director of the upcoming Punisher: War Zone film, shares photos and commentary from the set on her blog:

My team and I spent a lot of time researching the comic books, Tim Bradstreet’s art and all the reference films we decided upon. I think we watched one of those films at least 25 times during prep. Thank God Montreal has an endless supply of excellent wine and cheese, which made those sessions much more enjoyable.

Tim Bradstreet was especially helpful to us during prep and we were lucky enough to get him on the phone a couple of times to pick his brain. So you can imagine how stoked I am to get Tim’s first reaction to what he had seen of the film so far. Here is an excerpt from his email: “I had an opportunity to see a ton of stills from the film and it looks sensational. The Jigsaw makeup is top. LOVED seeing Doug Hutchinson look like such a hard assed nut, and of course, Ray Stevenson looks AWESOME. They lit a lot of it like I light and [they] did a great job.”

He still looks way to much like Steven Seagal.

  2. Sluggo Says:

Oh, Good God. All of the positive things that have come out about this movie, that it’s set in New York, that it striving for the look and feel of Ennis’s Punisher MAX stories, that they’ve assembled an amazing cast of actors, etc. and all you can contribute is that he looks too much like Steven Seagal for you?

What does that even matter, anyway? Have you seen Ray Stevenson act? He is a brilliant actor and can be so intense it’s downright scary when he wants to be. So his hair being slicked back makes him look like someone you don’t like. So what?

    Some perspective, please.

  3. Ian Says:

He can be as “intense” and “downright scary” as he wants, but that doesn’t change the fact that to me he looks like Steven Segal. And i really cant take that very seriously.

  4. Jesse Says:

Ray Stevenson was in Rome and he played the most bad assed character on the show. If the writing is there there’s little doubt in my mind he’ll pull off the best performance of Frank Castle ever. Not that they’s much competition but still.

  5. Sluggo Says:

    Alrighty then. Your loss.

Watch “Rome” and maybe your mind will change. But I think there’s an actor in that who looks kind of like Jean-Claude Van Damme, so that might ruin your enjoyment of it.

    Dolph. Now and Forever.

  7. David Says:

Is the Thomas Jane/John Travolta version worth watching?

THAT may be THE hottest director I’ve ever seen! :-O

  9. Sluggo Says:

I actually liked the Thomas Jane Punisher. Jane was a great Punisher in an imperfect movie, but I thought it worked more often than it didn’t (the fight with the Russian, his assault on Saint’s house at the end, the scene with the popscicle, taken directly from a scene in Chuck Dixon and JrJr’s great opening arc of the original Punisher: War Zone).

This new movie seems to be correcting many of the mistakes of the Jane version, i.e. set in New York, harder, more serious tone, more violence (sorry to sound so bloodthirsty, but what’s the Punisher without graphic violence?).

  10. kalorama Says:

I liked Jane’s performance in Punisher, but it was wasted in an otherwise awful movie.

  11. RMC Says:

This is shaping up to be pretty cool. Third times the charm.

  12. Alex Says:

“Made you kill your friend, made you kill your wife.”

Wait, they’re allowing women to direct movies, now? What is this country coming to.

  13. Sanford Williams Says:

“Suck my cock, the lot of yas! I’m Titus Pullo, Right?!”

I’ve seen ROME, and I do know that Ray Stevenson can pull it off. That and I hope Lexi Alexander can pull it off and keep it true to the orginal foundation laid by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru, and not knock off the Garth Ennis works.

  14. Weaponx Says:

Gran look !,mucha influencia al parecer de las historias de Ennis, espero que se mantenga asi, al fin al cabo , Punisher debe ser y parecer una maldito hijo de pu….

  15. mrpoizun Says:

What are you fools arguing about? You can’t tell a damn thing from those blurry little pictures!

  16. elvee Says:

I really like what I see here. The color and lighting reminds me of Bradstreet and some of the shots from Taxi Driver.
