On his blog, Sean Phillips posts his artwork for The Criterion Collection edition of Blast of Silence, Allen Baron’s 1961 noir thriller. Phillips also previews the first pages of a four-page comic adaptation included with the DVD. Beautiful stuff.
Darwyn Cooke and Danijel Zezelj illustrated covers for Criterion in 2006.

This is a great movie and worth checking out. I picked up a copy after reading a review in Brubaker and Phillips’ Criminal.

As a Criterion maniac (click my website link, it’s a blog where I review their DVDs), I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out the other comic book illustrator covers:
Mike Allred
Jaime Hernandez
Bill Sienkiewicz
I had the pleasure of seeing Blast of Silence many years ago but had forgotten the name in the interim. I thought I’d never set eyes on it again!

I’d somehow forgotten about Allred’s cover, but I don’t believe I’d seen the ones by Hernandez and Sienkiewicz. Thanks, Jamie!

…not to mention the covers we’ve done with Jock (Drunken Angel) and Kent Williams (Miss Julie)
Blast of Silence is one of my favorite films in a while, and Sean did an amazing job on the project.
Thanks for the mention, Kevin!

Oh, wow! I didn’t catch that Williams had done Miss Julie. I need to pay more attention to the interior credits.
(Alas, Drunken Angel is hopefully my next purchase.)

I saw this and went to add it to my netflix queue and it isn’t there! I may have to buy this, given the comic adaptation phillips is doing.
