What goes around…

January 22nd, 2008

Jim Beard thinks that he’s discovered the blueprint for modern DC comics - in a mini-series from almost a decade ago:

I was re-reading the SILVER AGE miniseries from a few years back and came across these fun facts:

- At the end of the 80 Page Giant, Platinum of the Metal Men says that maybe there’ll be a “Great Disaster” someday that they’ll all have to team up again for.

- The Power Rings of the Rainbow (ala Sinestro Corps War) show up and are used by the villains.

- The group of villains switch bodies with the heroes, discover their identities, and have to have their minds wiped at the end (ala Identity Crisis).

If this means that we’re heading towards a new Dial H for Hero revival, then I’m all for it…

And hopefully it won’t be frontloaded with loathing for superhero fans or endless daddy issues.

I just reread Gruenwald’s Squadron Supreme last weekend and I was thinking how much THAT series was the prototype for Marvel, circa 2006-2008. Basically everything Civil War and Initiative-related seems directly inspired by what Gruenwald did in SS 23 years ago.

Yeah, but unlike DC’s recent output, the SILVER AGE event (minus Millar’s wretched JLA) and SQUADRON SUPREME weren’t reheated faeces on a stick.

Well yeah, when you ignore the good books I’m sure it’s bound to be that way.
