In its monthly analysis of Diamond’s direct-market numbers, ICv2.com reports that 2007 was “a very strong year” for comics sales, with graphic novels up 18 percent over the previous year, and single issues up 7 percent. That makes for a combined 9 percent increase.

That overall growth isn’t as strong as in 2006, during which combined sales rose 13 percent over 2005.

As Newsarama noted yesterday, Marvel’s The Ultimates 3 #1 was the top-selling comic in December; ICv2.com estimates 131,401 copies were sold to specialty shops. And what was No. 2? The Amazing Spider-Man #545, the conclusion to the controversial “One More Day” storyline (an estimated 124,481 copies).

Graphic novel sales, down nearly 30 percent from November, were led by Garth Ennis’ The Chronicles of Wormwood: Last Enemy (an estimated 6,023 copies). ICv2 credits November’s performance to strong backlist sales of expensive hardcover editions.
