Sources of future frustration and bitterness, pt. 23.

The Bendis Board ponders something that all comic nerds have considered at least once:

“Naming kids after comic characters [...] Cool? Lame? Horror stories?”

“Let’s just say Sue Dibney’s not a popular choice.”

“I wanted to name a son Logan for the longest time, but once I heard it was starting to make the rounds as a girl name, I nixed it. I don’t like any other comic names for the most part enough to name a child after.”

“Depends on the name. Actually naming your son Kal-El is pretty retarded. Harley Quinn Smith is a nice name. Peter Parker Kirkman is a nice name. etc.”

“My cousin and her husband named their daughter Mara Jade. I was the only 1 in the family that got the reference…”

“Proabably not what your talking about but, my youngest I named Ian Kurt, Ian after one of my favorite artist Ian Churchill and Kurt for Nightcrawler. Edit: The daughter I never had was going to be named Myung from Macross Plus.”

“Any kid named Captian America is getting mad ass IMO..”

“You name your kid that, and I will name mine Red Skull.”

I’ve introduced you to my son, Orion Lightray Darkseid McMillan, right…?

When I was six, my parents let me pick my baby sister’s middle name, Gwen, which was of course a tribute to Peter Parker’s recently cloned dead girlfriend.(I had originally lobbied to name her Thor.)

When my second kid was on the way a few years ago, I teased my wife that I wanted to name him Kamandi.

I say “teased” only because she didn’t like it.

Finally, a few years ago, I bought my house from a guy whose 4-year-old kid was named Mjolnir. Now that’s just fantastic.

I love the name Cole, for no other reason than I used to think that Grifter was the coolest guy ever. I’ve been saying for years that I want to name my first son that. My dad didn’t like comics, but he’s a TV junkie. I was named for Adam Cartwright, and my sister was nearly named after Athena from Battlestar Galactica.

  3. Augie De Blieck Jr. Says:

I believe “Peter Parker Kirkman” was a gag, though.

what’s wrong with naming a kid Kalel? :[

    I always liked it.

My wife said I could give our son the first name James and the middle name Tiberius. I think I would be reaching to throw in the Kirk, but you never know…
