The Minneapolis/St. Paul City Pages has an article up on “reals” – folks who put on costumes and head out into the streets to fight crime:
BY MOST OBSERVERS’ RECKONING, between 150 and 200 real-life superheroes, or “Reals” as some call themselves, operate in the United States, with another 50 or so donning the cowl internationally. These crusaders range in age from 15 to 50 and patrol cities from Indianapolis to Cambridgeshire, England. They create heroic identities with names like Black Arrow, Green Scorpion, and Mr. Silent, and wear bright Superman spandex or black ninja suits. Almost all share two traits in common: a love of comic books and a desire to improve their communities.
Geist, pictured above, uses smoke grenades, pepper spray, a slingshot, bolos and a pair of six-inch fighting sticks to fight crime. The article also mentioned Hero Gear, a website that sells costumes.

…
I can’t even say anything. My head’s shaking back and forth too fast.
January 17th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I hear ya Vinnie… I had much the same reaction. Wow.
January 17th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Hey, I’m totally for this. There’s more than enough bigoted, ignorant assholes in this world devoted to completely terrible ideas and notions. These guys might be foolish, but at least their idyllic. They’re simplistic and there’s nothing wrong with that. No need to shit on their parade, at least they’re TRYING to do something even if it won’t amount to much in some people eye’s. If they’re happy and they try to stand up for positive ideals, Kudos.
…still it’s kind of funny.

Going and helping out at a shelter or maybe visiting sick kids or something in costume is great.
Acting as a vigilante… not so much.
January 17th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
You guys should really check out Mr. Silent’s MySpace page. It’s inspiring and hilarious. (Like Mike Huckabee.)
January 17th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
Considering it’s going to reach a high of 0º here in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area this weekend, my guess is that there aren’t too many “Reals” lurking about fighting crime.
Or criminals committing crimes for that matter.
January 17th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Imagine if everyone was inspired to do good?
Can’t pick on anyone that reads comics and tried to help their community. sure they can become obvious targets…but i like the idea that one day the crime fighters might outnumber the amount of criminals out there.
it just shows that local crime enforcement has their hands full as well.
entertainment coming our way daily.
January 17th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
How long until we get a headline about one of these fools getting killed because they wanted to play superhero?
January 17th, 2008 at 2:58 pm
As long as nobody strays into vigilantism, I have no problem with this.
January 17th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
Every now and again on I come across news articles about masked martial artists or swordfighters taking down muggers and theives and I just get this feeling of wierd feeling of giddyness mixed with confusion.
January 17th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
Please tell me this is viral marketing for Watchmen.
January 17th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Are we sure that this isn’t all more publicity for Millar and Romita’s upcoming “Kick-Ass” (which is essentially about a “Real”)?
January 17th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
This is real. Not marketing. Mister Silent is someone I talked to a few years ago. He’s been on the news a few times and alot of people feel like he kinda helped push all of this.
January 17th, 2008 at 4:16 pm
I think this is Viral – if you read the whole article, one of the Reals says that comics are “kick-ass” and that he volunteers in the Banner Desert Hospital children’s ward.
These might be real people they are using in the article, but the article itself seems to be a marketing stunt.
January 17th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
If this is real…
“Ultimately, police wouldn’t prosecute unless The Eye revealed his secret identity—a concession he was unwilling to make—but he nonetheless chalks it up as a victory.”
then that sentence perfectly sums up exactly why these people do deserve to be mocked and insulted.
January 17th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
…You know, Captain Sticky would have *loved* this one
January 18th, 2008 at 4:11 am
this is real. i’ve met a few of these people, and used to check out a message board they circulated through.
most of them are innocent do-gooders, doing neighborhood checks, chasing off vandals, reporting anything REALLY serious to the police and filing a report (just…you know, in costume), but there are a few that are a bit more…hardcore about it, infiltrating gangs and sabotaging them from with in under deep cover.
it’s pretty crazy/amazing, and really takes alot of balls, even if people do think its silly.
January 18th, 2008 at 9:18 am
OM beat me to it.
I remember Captain Sticky from the seventies – he was a lawyer in CA who dressed up to draw publicity for the pro bono cases he was…lawyering.
He was on Real People (Hi, I’m old…) and there was a song about him on one of Rhino records’ first albums.
I think he ended up gettin indicted for misapproriation of funds. Which…isn’t a really good ending to the story. Sorry.
January 18th, 2008 at 9:19 am
Notice how most of these guys are, for lack of a better term, blue collar? So much for the bored, rich philanthropist conceit.
January 18th, 2008 at 9:35 am
How do these guys find crime?
January 18th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
One of the reasons comic book super-heroes don’t appeal to me as much as they used to is that the real crime, the real problems in the world are not street crime. Those are the symptoms of it. Capitalism run amok, politicians whose sole aim is to line their pockets and those of their cronies, war for the sake of making a handful of people richer at the expense of the entire country: THESE are the real evils in society.
Yet if Green Arrow went around murdering CEOs who made $400 million per year while their employees (or their foreign “contract workers” thanks to outsourcing) get horrific working conditions and slave wages, of course he’d be a “villain.”
But that would be justice.
P.S. Yeah, I’m a left-wing nutjob.
January 18th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
All that said, I would love to see THIS in a comic book: “I horse-shitted myself into thinking I was being a symbol for people and all that,” Superhero says. “But then I just faced the truth and admitted I do it ’cause it’s hella fun.”
January 18th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
Still not as powerful as Mr. Silent but Deadly “He who smells it and deals it”
January 19th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
Yeah, Grant Morrison already predicted we’d see “real” superheroes. (I’m surprised no one said this already.) I find them amusing. At least until the first “Batman” shows up.
January 20th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
i don’t want to be a stick in the mud, but i think this is a mark millar prank.
January 21st, 2008 at 2:18 pm
RJackson…found this link to the Banner Desert Hospital.
I dunno if this is the place or not…http://www.bannerhealth.com/Locations/Arizona/Banner+Desert+Medical+Center/_Banner+Desert+Medical+Center.htm
but it’s a “real” place.
REALLY not knowing how I feel about this. part of me wants to support the movement, and these guys and women…a bigger part of me wants to hide my head in shame because these are another group that give the comic community a…questionable rep.
i just don’t know…all I say is…do good, guys!
January 24th, 2008 at 1:57 am
Can’t say these articles aren’t being written by journalists that want to ride the storm of the “comic/movie” sweep, BUT WE are here to help.
Community support, Crime Prevention, Disaster Response… If citizens need help, we are there for them!
There are those, as any community, who take things too far… Personally I have yet to hear of any accounts.
February 1st, 2008 at 8:12 am
While researching the RLSH movement I found most of the reals are harmless. Of course with any group there are the hardcore people. One in particular comes to mind… he goes by the name of Supreme. An ex Army Ranger court-martialed for unknown reasons turned his focus on protecting the country another way. Talking to Supreme was intense. Look into this guy. Awesome. myspace.com/justiceassociation
