Supernatural: Rising Son #1

TVGuide.com has the cover and preview pages from Wildstorm’s Supernatural: Rising Son, a sequel of sorts to their Supernatural: Origins mini-series. The cover, posted here, is by Dustin Nguyen.

The site reports:

Set a few years after Origins, the story picks up with an 11-year-old Dean and a 7-year-old Sam traveling with their father, John. “Whereas the first series was more about John and his becoming a hunter, this one’s much more of a dysfunctional-family story,” explains writer Peter Johnson, who’s also a coexecutive producer on the TV show. “We’re really going to explore the differences between Sam and Dean in this one. Dean is becoming aware of what his dad’s up to and we’ll see him training and hunting a little bit, while John will start to key in on something different about Sam.”

They also note that The CW has four more Supernatural episodes in the can before it goes on a writer’s strike-enduced hiatus.

Any word on the artist? I love the show but was disappointed with the art on the last mini. If there is an art change I’ll definitely buy the new mini, otherwise I’ll probably pass.

  2. Simon DelMonte Says:

As much as I love the show, the first comic was only passable. Peter Johnson is not in the same league as the show’s actual writers. But it’s still good to see that the comic sold well enough to warrant a sequel.

  3. Paul Nolan Says:

The art is by Diego Olmos…. (it’s in the corener of the preview pages)

  4. QNetter Says:

Um, a co-executive producer *is* a writer on a show.

Peter Johnson is co-executive producer, but he seems to have a very different idea of the series from what’s been aired, based on the previous run of comics. I would be greatly reassured if Sera Gamble or one of the regular series writers had editorial oversight, but we can all dream.

Even Eric Kripke, creator of the series was mentioned to be involved in the production of the first one, and the only way I can reconcile that with how off-base with the series as shown that comic was is that he was distracted from the canon discepancies by being incredibly busy with the series itself and his new son, and perhaps by the shiny chainsaws in part four.

That said, I am greatly heartened that there is a new artist who can hopefully draw children, and I am looking forward to the new series with extremely guarded optimism.
