The Comics Journal message board starts to collectively shake its head at Marvel’s UN comic plans…:
“With gritted teeth….. he punches food into wartorn orphans mouths as they open them in shock and awe! UNICEF MAN!!!”
“This sounds as ill-conceived as the results when the ACLU commissioned some superhero comics… Do not, in a doofus version of the Midas Touch, these garishly costumed übermenschen instantly demean both the seriousness and tragedy of whatever real-life problem they touch, and heighten their own inherent absurdity as well? If any proof be needed, consider the inferiority of every single page in those 9/11 comics which featured a Spandex-garbed ‘hero.’ Or that comics cover with Superman overcome with dismay at some African famine: rather than making the Kryptonian ‘relevant,’ it merely points out how ludicrously irrelevant he and his masked and caped kin are.”
“This is all part of a secret One World Government plot to prepare earth for consumption by Galactus.”
…And then things get more than slightly derailed by a discussion over whether or not the UN is a nefarious organization attempting to undermine democracy, freedom and apple pie. Which is, oddly enough, an interesting read in and of itself. Click through and see.
