The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review talks to frequent Harvey Pekar collaborator Ed Piskor about his new, self-published book, “Wizzywig — Volume 1: Phreak”:
“Wizzywig” follows a young hacker who starts off with simple phone pranks before progressing to more dangerous schemes. Piskor has received orders for the book from some cult figures from hacking circles, and plans more books in the series.
Not bad for a guy who, a few years ago, was just hoping to get some steady work as an illustrator or graphics artist. After graduating high school, Piskor attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in Dover, N.J. His goal was not so much to hone his craft as it was to network, and after a year of study Piskor left the school determined to find outlets for his art.
“I did a bunch of strips on my own and sent them to the comic book publishers, who pretty much rejected them immediately,” he says. “I had no idea what I was doing wrong, so I started sending them to cartoonists I respected for feedback.”
