Was this Wizard interview with Daniel Way about his new Deadpool ongoing book with Steve Dillon the least-noticed announcement of a new Marvel book in quite some time, or have I just missed more than usual in the last few weeks?
Obviously I love working with Steve. That’s why I do it so often. But look at those 12 issues of Punisher he did with Garth [Ennis]. It went very light and dark. It was funny until you got punched in the gut, and I think Steve just shined like a star during that whole thing. I think that’s going to come back out in this Deadpool stuff. You talk to Steve, and obviously the man has a wicked sense of humor, so it’s one of those situations where not only do I want to bring out the character in Wade Wilson/Deadpool…I want to bring out the character in Steve Dillon! [Laughs] And myself, while I’m at it. I want to get back to writing these madcap caper kinds of things. That’s what I dig reading, and when I went into this, the plan was always, “I want to write books that I want to read.” And we’re going to get back to that. Both with the Deadpool stuff and with Origins as a whole.

I guess he was refering to the new arc in Wolverine Origins co-starring Deadpool, the first issue is out this week.

Nope - The article is about a new series that Way and Dillon are working on. Dillon is leaving Origins to work on it.

He does talk about this, but the article specifically states that Dillon is leaving Origins to launch a new Deadpool on-going with Way. I just glanced over the article and didn’t see a launch month for the new title. As this was an exclusive for Wizard and happened right before the weekend, I’d say it’s only a matter of time before the other sites pick up on it. Graeme already did, obviously.

I dropped Wolverine: Origins because of Dillon’s art. I think he’s got talent and skill but in my opinion it just doesn’t fit with Wolverine. As for him drawing Deadpool, well I guess I’ll have to wait and see some preview pages before making a decision. We all know Deadpool is going to be a snarky series so it will depend on how Dillon adjusts to the new character for me to decide on picking it up or not.

I hate Way’s writing. There are some authors I love and other authors everyone else love that don’t do anything for me, but Way is the only one I can think of that I hate. I gave Origins a chance and dropped it after 12 issues or so which is far more time than I should have gave it.
It’s nothing against the guy, he might be a pretty cool guy and he may in fact be able to write something good but if that’s the case I’ve yet to read it. Any more if I see something with his name on it I don’t even bother opening the cover.

I lament how fun and lighthearted and thought-provoking Cable/Deadpool was. I really do.

Way’s real strength as a writer is, as he said, the more madcap, black comedy action pieces he did before Origins started, and if he and Dillon are firing on all cylinders, this could be up there with Bullseye’s Greatest Hits and Supreme Power: Nighthawk as some of the best black comedy Marvel has put out since Welcome Back, Frank.

Way has strength as a writer?

Ah, bollocks, he’s actually writing a Deadpool series?
This Wolverine Origins issue is awful, he’s just not funny!

I’ll still pick up the first few issues of a new Deadpool ongoing, but if Deadpool in Wolverine origins is any indication, things aren’t looking up. The duck duck goose bit was clever, but then we’ve got weird things like Deadpool looking like he’s about to cry… And where are Deadpool’s yellow word bubbles?
