Getting a jump on the Smurfs’ 50th anniversary

Peyo (Pierre Culliford), with a Smurf

This ABC News story about the 50th anniversary of The Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs) botches a key fact: Belgian cartoonist Peyo’s little blue creatures didn’t first appear on this day in 1958. The year is right, but they didn’t come along until Oct. 23, in a Johan & Peewit story in Le Journal de Spirou.

However, I presume the rest of the article, which mentions yearlong plans in Belgium to celebrate the occasion, is correct.

Okay, smurfiness of this smurfy story aside, can you imagine the uproar if that picture with Peyo, a Smurf statue and a lit cigarette had been released as a current shot today? I can see it now… the newest Smurf to join the mushroom village… Smokey Smurf!!!
