    Hahahahaha … DROPPED

  2. Phoenix Says:

Why do all Ramos’ figures need enormous feet?

  3. Scud-O Says:

Man, I LOVE Ramos’ stuff. I’m really looking forward to this new run.

  4. Matthew Says:

Sigh…not looking forward to his art on such a good book. Ramos is just not right for Runaways. I mean, really…we’re going from Michael Ryan to this?!?!? And dear God…he put Karolina in crocs…uggggh. Why does he have to draw feet so HUGE?!?!?

Well, I guess this is what we’ll be seeing in the book…in early 2009 when Whedon finally finishes his last two issues!

  5. MrFlantastic Says:

I actually like his work but without Whedon I won’t be picking up the title anymore.

You laugh pat but his work is published and read by thousands for a reason, can you say the same? Every artist has their own style and every fan their own tastes. I personally don’t like a lot of artists but they are still artists doing something I can’t and I respect them for that. There is no bad art only art that isn’t your style.

  6. Zeitgeist Says:

If the names werent here i doubt i would have been able to tell that it was Runaways, the characters looks nothing like they should

  7. Erech Says:

    Oh brother.

  8. Kevin Huxford Says:

I like Ramos art, but I don’t like some of the design changes he appears to have made. And Niko having clown shoes doesn’t help. :)

  9. Jason "CodeGuy" Bryant Says:

Generally I don’t like Ramos. But I think he’s a better fit for Runaways than he was for Wolverine. I think his exaggerated, cartoony style works well with younger characters.

I do think his Niko is a bit off. The clothes look a less gothic and more foofy than Niko’s clothes usually look. Molly is adorable, though.

  10. Jesse Says:

I’m with Zeitgeist, I can’t recognize any of those characters without the names. Well except for Molly, but only because she’s shorter. And if you didn’t tell me it was Runaways I wouldn’t even be able to say that.

It’s not that his artwork is bad. It’s very competently done. It’s just not a good fit for these characters at all.

  11. alf Says:

“There is no bad art only art that isn’t your style.”

To be fair, there is some pretty bad art out there. But Ramos has a very distinct style and I agree that what he does, he does well. It’s not like he can’t draw, just that he chooses draw in a way that’s not universally appealing. It was perfect for Impulse 10 years ago, but he’s rarely been matched with the right project since. I mean, DV8? What was somebody smoking? And he seemed out of place recently on Carey’s X-Men and his Messiah Complex chapters. I think he could work for the characters and tone of Runaways depending on the story, but his art is going to be an incredibly jarring shift from Michael Ryan. I can totally understand why people wouldn’t like it. Terry Moore’s superhero writing has never really worked for me but I’ll probably at least take a look when it hits.

  12. chrishaley Says:

I like Ramos but this is way too cartoony to me. I know this is a book about kids, but that doesn’t mean it should look like it’s a book only for kids.
I’ll check out the book itself whenever it comes out and give it a fair shake though.

  13. avengingtitan Says:

I’ll give it a shot, but my god I’m not feeling this.

  14. Joe Perez Says:

I don’t mind artistic license and all that, but that Nico design is a little too anime-sexualized for my visual tastes. The other designs are fine and all.

  15. caleb Says:

Oh hey, I remember Runaways! I used to really enjoy reading this title. Whatever happened to it?

  16. Bill D. Says:

I actually like most of the designs, but one thing jumped out at me: is Nico’s shirt tucked up under her boobs? How does someone even do that? Why does someone even do that?

  17. Simon DelMonte Says:

    Too cutesy.

Not that this is ever coming out, given that the last issues of Joss’ run are still not anywhere in sight.

  18. Kevin Huxford Says:

I seem to vaguely remember some kinda series like that coming out back in the day, but I can’t remember what it was. It is as if someone has made me forget via magic. :)

  19. Jason Dincauze Says:

So, Ramos is drawing what will be the Runaways Secret Invasion Tie-ins? Is that what we’re to assume here?

  20. Rhuw Morgan Says:

I actually really like the art - yes it’s different to whats in the book at the minute but it doesn’t mean it’s bad. I do think the comments that you couldn’t tell who anyone is without the names is a bit rediculous - its fairly obvious who everyone is if you’ve been reading the book regulary. Only Xavin looks majorly differnt but s/he is a Skrull anyway!

  21. Jason "CodeGuy" Bryant Says:

I agree with Rhuw about recognisability. Xavin was the only one I had trouble with, and that’s mainly because s/he’s a newer character that I tend to forget anyway.

Chase is a tall guy with slightly long hair and a goofy look. Niko has dark, spiky hair. Karolina is the pretty blonde. Molly is not just short, but adorable. They’re easy enough to pick out.

  22. Fernando X Fuentes (real name) Says:

    i can’t wait for this.

  23. Michael Says:

Looks cool to me. Has more personality than Ryan’s stuff, and hearkens back to Alphona.

  24. David Says:

As long as the writing and art on the same tone scale, I’m for it. My only gripe is the sexualization of Xavin and Nico.

  25. Wave Says:

Molly looks perfect!! Old Lace looks very, very cool. Only problems I have is with Nico too… she just looks like an anime Maid-SailorScout-Clown… person… *scratches head*

  26. ipm Says:

I like Ramos, I like Moore and thanx to Whedon and Ryan I discovered Runaways. I was missing a great title. Bring on the tps!
Oh, and Ramos is great! I´m sticking around.

  27. blehbeh Says:

Molly’s looking a tad small for an 11, (possibly 12 now) year old, compared to a group of teenagers. She looks about 5 years old…

Not really a fan of most of these designs either. Nico looks clownish, even for a Ramos design, and I never really got the impression that Chase was supposed to have a big chinned, burly jock look. The core of Ramos art is exaggeration, and often it works. These just seem to be exaggerations in all the wrong places..

  28. longoc Says:

Yeah, Molly looks way too small like how he draws Layla Miller in the messiah complex. I usually like ramos art but this looks kind of odd. I WANNA SEE SKOTTIE YOUNG ON RUNAWAYS

  29. Mr. Oliphant Says:

    Those characters look very inhuman.

  30. Jason "CodeGuy" Bryant Says:

Two of them aren’t human. Three if you count the dinosaur.

  31. Pseudonym Says:

What about “Nico is underage” does he not get?

Also, I thought Old Lace was smaller than that.

If Moore uses the designs well the book could still be good but disgusting.

  32. c. towns Says:

eh. i think it looks alright. i’m going to try it.

  33. Alex C Says:

It’s always interesting to see another artist’s take on different characters. I personally always loved Ramos work. Should be interesting and refreshing to see where his art takes this book.

  34. Rhuw Morgan Says:

I think Nico is wearing a corset over her shirt btw - not tucking her shirt under her breasts. It’s the goth look.

  35. neftones Says:

Christ I hate his style. I thought it might work for Runaways in a way that it didn’t work for X-Men, but it actually looks worse here. How depressing. Bring back Alphona, for the love of Pete.

  36. Eric Says:

I love Whedon, but his run has killed my excitement for my favorite book. Forget about his next few issues, I haven’t even bothered actually reading all the issues that have come out.
I like this shot. My problem with Ramos is that his stuff looks sloppy and cluttered when in actual patterns. But if he can get back to his style on Impulse and Crimson, he will be a great fit for this. I think he is way more in line with Alphona (w/o aping him) than Norton’s traditional style.

  37. Lex Says:

I think this is the perfect art style for a book like Runaways. Molly, in particular, looks awesome. I’m looking forward to this run.

  38. ejulp Says:

“do think his Niko is a bit off. The clothes look a less gothic and more foofy than Niko’s clothes usually look.”

I do see a lot of “gothic” girls dress like that (especially those tall-boot-chucks)…
I mean the gothic lolita thing she has been doing…seems like something she might wear out…to a club, or as a costume, or something…whereas this seems more casual.

I like it…I like Ramos on a youthful title like this, he has a sense of fashion, etc…but HATE HATE HATE any of his scenes where he trys to depict “action.” I’m dreading his X-men vs Marauders fight next week.

He really needs to reign “it in” a bit with the exaggeration, when he shows fighting scenes…if he did that, I think people would look forward to his work more.

  39. rob Says:

I will hold off final judgment until I see a completed issue, but lately I have not been I fan of Ramos’ work, especially in X-Men. I find these designs to be… questionable. The Runaways may be teen heroes but they’ve never really been cartoony like other teen books. Anyone else recall the train wreck that was the Runaways/X-Men FCBD book?

But, I remember loving his stuff on Impuse, so maybe he won’t be as bad as I’m dreading.

  40. Rich Says:

Not loving this either, but I’m usually kinda iffy on the Ramos style. I only read Runaways in collected editions, but I’ll probably pick up an issue at some point to see how it’s going.

  41. Jason "CodeGuy" Bryant Says:

“I do see a lot of “gothic” girls dress like that (especially those tall-boot-chucks)…
I mean the gothic lolita thing she has been doing…seems like something she might wear out…to a club, or as a costume, or something…whereas this seems more casual.”

That’s the problem. This looks like clubwear, which doesn’t fit Nico.

I’ve just flipped through my Runaways TPBs. Nico sometimes wears elaborate flowy things and she sometimes wears casual stuff like jeans and t-shirt. And I’ve even found variations on that outfit in Ramos’ pic. There’s a book where she wears a white shirt and a tie. There’s a book where she wears a skirt and striped stockings.

The difference is that the skirts she’s worn in the past weren’t so short that she’d show her butt just barely bending over. And the shirt she wore with the tie was fairly loose fitting, not vacuum formed.

So it’s lots of little changes in the Ramos version that emphasize the ‘lolita’ way more than the ‘gothic’.

  42. ejulp Says:

Ok, I think I agree with you.

  43. zod Says:

ramos needs to head back to his creator-owned stuff. ‘crimson’ was one of the best series of its time, and ‘out there’ wasn’t too shabby either.

i understand he needs to pay the bills (his wolverine run was bloody atrocious though) but yeah, i think marvel is entirely the wrong place for him to be.

perhaps jumping ship to dc to work on flash? legion of super heroes? teen titans?

  44. Jason "CodeGuy" Bryant Says:

Why would his style be a better match for Teen Titans than Runaways?

  45. zod Says:

    only a suggestion jason.

runaways is much less capes/tights-centric than runaways is. methinks ramos’ art may suit the titans slightly more.

and with the (awful) run he’s been doing on x-men, they look like teenage versions of themselves anyways. it’s not a big step imagining him pencilling the titans.

i dunno. let’s completely turn things upside down and put him on punisher max.

  46. r Says:

I know people either love or hate Humberto Ramos’ art (personally, I think he’s great, even if he can go over-the-top), but this is one posed drawing. It tells us nothing of the story that will be told in the comic.

  47. Jesse Says:

How can you not like Molly?

  48. augustus Says:

I am so mixed on Ramos art but I will still read Runaways.

  49. Rodolfo Leon Says:

i LOVE Ramos, and he’s a brilliant fit for this title. i may actually start picking up Runaways again just based on this.

  50. Chris S Says:

I really like Ramos’ art and can’t wait to see him on Runaways. I’m always surprised how much the Newsarama posters hate the non-realistic art. This book is aimed more at people who read manga more than normal comic fans.

I think they should do a wonder woman and just skip the rest of wendons run. He’s killing the book.

  51. MAL Says:

    Meen…i like the T-shirt :D

  52. mike redona Says:

I like this. I believe this hearkens back to the original sense of style that Alphona brought to the table–personally Ryan was not my cup of tea.

Anyone happen to know what Alphona is doing nowadays?

  53. Crusader K Says:

Hmmm…nnnnot a big fan of Ramos’ work at all except for “Revelations” (and that was as much about the moody coloring and texturing as it was his actual penciling, but I digress), buuut I’ve come to an understanding of his art. It’s exaggerated and expressive, which kinda works on a teen book as EVERYTHING in a teen’s life tends to be dramatic and expressive. I wouldn’t put him on a more straight laced book like Captain America or Superman, but the style may fit Runaways. When the book comes out. Someday. But count me in the camp that I HATE the big feet. I mean - isn’t that so…like…late ’90’s style? I’ll chance it.

  54. Predabot Says:

Uh… All I can say is this: I think it’s a mistake on Marvels part to put Ramos on this book.

I hear the writer is really good tho..

  55. Oaks Says:

To me, Ramos is simply amazing in everything he does. I like that he exaggerates his action poses, I love the big shoes and jackets, the big bright doe eyes on his females, gigantic explosions, bold outlines, and all of the cartoony flair it brings. Its fresh, its fun, and unique, and even those that are influenced by him can’t duplicate him completely. His style is kinetic and energetic, and the way he captures a splash… WOW. Look at Sinister… look at Gambit and Mystique… those close up’s are so bold… when I get to enjoy his work, I’m taken completely out of reality for the duration of the read! In particular, any book that harbors a “youth” quality Ramos was birthed to draw, and I have no doubt that Runaways will be one more great run for Mr. Humberto. People enjoy hating too much… I remember when Igor Kordey drew the Xmen… wipe my @$$ with that stuff!

  56. Dj Says:

Gotta say, its different to how the characters have been interpreted before but im LOVIN it, cant wait for Ramos to start and to get the current storyline over which i feel has been a real yawn.
