Can’t Wait for Wednesday

January 8th, 2008
Author Kevin Melrose

What’s this? New Comics Day falls on a Wednesday again? All is right with the world!

Well, I guess that depends on what side of “One More Day”/”Brand New Day” you fall on. That’s right, Spider-Man’s new status quo begins this week with The Amazing Spider-Man #546. You may have read something about it …

Not interested? How about the now-found Teen Titans: The Lost Annual, or the now-red Hulk? J. Michael Straczynski and Chris Weston’s resurrection of obscure Timely characters, The Twelve?

Then how about Joe Casey’s first issue of Youngblood, or Darwyn Cooke’s final issue of The Spirit?

To see what other titles Chris Mautner and I think are worth mentioning, just keep reading. As always, let us know your choices in the comments below.

Kevin’s pick of the week: Teen Titans: The Lost Annual

Back in 2003, DC was ready to publish the Teen Titans Swingin’ Elseworlds Special, by original Titans writer Bob Haney and artists Jay Stephens and Mike Allred. Fans of the creators, and of Silver Age wackiness, were giddy with excitement — that is until DC canceled the one-shot just two months before its release date. According to Stephens, DC felt the story was “too weird,” and contradicted “the current, highly successful, efforts of the new Titans monthly. In fact, they actually argued that the timing was bad, and that releasing the comic when the Titans weren’t so popular would be a better idea.”

More than four years later, the timing apparently is right, as this week we get the now-renamed Teen Titans: The Lost Annual, in which the original team — Robin, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, Speedy and Aqualad — head into space to rescue President John F. Kennedy.

Unfortunately, Haney isn’t here to see his last Titans story in print. He passed away on Nov. 25, 2004.

Chris’ pick of the week: Manga Sutra, Vol. 1

All right everyone, get your head out of the gutter for a moment. Sure, this new series from Tokyopop is strictly “adults only,” but it’s much more of a lighthearted slice-of-life comedy about a newlywed couple coming to grips with the mysteries of sex than some smutty hentai (hey, ICv2 said so themselves, and they wouldn’t lie!).

I’ve heard quite a bit about this series, usually good things, and I admit I’m curious to see how it discusses some rather sensitive topics in a hopefully tasteful manner. Not to mention the handling of gender issues. There’s plenty of manga that have fallen into that pit, after all.

B.P.R.D.: 1946 #1
B.P.R.D., Vol. 7: The Garden of Souls

Kevin: While I was coming up with my favorite comics of 2007 a few weeks ago, I ended up with a side list of titles that never disappoint. B.P.R.D. and Hellboy were at the top (followed by Criminal, 100 Bullets and Diggle and Manco’s Hellblazer). Although the Hellboy stories are somewhat rare, B.P.R.D. miniseries now appear like clockwork, and I couldn’t be happier. With 1946, Joshua Dysart and Paul Azaceta step in for John Arcudi and Guy Davis to help Mike Mignola with a tale of B.P.R.D. founder Trevor Bruttenholm and the mystery of the Nazi Occult Bureau’s Project Vampir Sturm.

And if that’s not enough B.P.R.D. for you, Dark Horse also collects The Garden of Souls, a miniseries that focuses on Abe Sapien’s backstory.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Omnibus, Vol. 3

Kevin: Dark Horse knows an opportunity when it sees one. As fans of Joss Whedon and Buffy the Vampire Slayer snatch up the canonical Season 8 series, the publisher cranks out these brick-like omnibus collections of older stories the audience likely missed. This volume includes work by creators Andi Watson, Christopher Golden, Dan Brereton and Eric Powell.

Showcase Presents: Robin, the Boy Wonder, Vol. 1

Kevin: If Teen Titans: The Lost Annual isn’t enough to quench your thirst for old-school superhero adventure, here’s the first volume of classic Robin stories by Gardner Fox, Bob Haney, Neal Adams, Gil Kane and others.

The Amazing Spider-Man #546

Kevin: I don’t have any more to say about “One More Day” and “Brand New Day.” But this is the issue that establishes Spider-Man’s new status quo and begins the three-times-a-month publishing schedule. So … yeah.

Hulk #1

Chris: So the Hulk’s red now, right? But his pants aren’t still purple are they? Because that would be a serious fashion faux pas.

Nextwave: Agents of H.A.T.E., Vol. 2

Chris: The second half of one of my favorite books of 2006 gets collected into a trade paperback. Perhaps more people will buy it now.

Atomic Robo #4 (of 6)
Maintenance #7

Kevin: Here are two completely unrelated titles that I keep hearing a lot of good things about. I need to play catch-up and see what I’m missing.

Black Hole Collected softcover

Chris: You know, if I and everyone else who’s raved about Charles Burns’ masterpiece haven’t been able to at least whet your curiosity, then perhaps this $18 softcover edition will do the trick. If not, I dunno what to do. We may have to start seeing other people.

The Boys #14

Chris: This issue, I believe, wraps up the current Russian storyline. Which is good, because I didn’t really feel like it was going anywhere.

Graphic Biography: J. Edgar Hoover
Students for a Democratic Society

Chris: Two new books from Hill and Wang in its ongoing nonfiction series. The first is a straightforward biography of the founder and leader of the FBI, by Mr. Rick Geary. It’s a rather unadorned, just-the-facts rundown of his life, but if you’re unfamiliar with Hoover and his importance, it will provide a valuable service.

The second, courtesy of Harvey Pekar, Gary Dumm and historian Paul Buhle, chronicles one of the more prominent student organizations of the turbulent 1960s.

Hickee, Vol. 3 #4

Chris: A new issue of Graham Annable’s humor anthology. the results tend to be mixed, but it’s usually worth picking up if only to read Annable and Scott Campbell’s latest work. Those are two very funny guys.

Jenna Jameson’s Shadow Hunter #0

Chris: Insert your own about slutty, sophomoric joke about Jenna Jameson being worth a quarter here. Extra points if you can work the title into the punchline.

Heh, I just typed “insert.”

The Adventures of Herge, Creator of Tintin hardcover

Chris: Attention surrounding the upcoming Peter Jackson film seems to have spurred some publishing interest in getting more Tintin books out there, which can never be a bad thing, as far as I’m concerned. Michael Farr, who penned Tintin: The Complete Companion (and is an expert Tintinologist in general), is the voice behind this illustrated biography of the man behind the boy reporter.

  1. Ken Says:

Let’s take a moment and extend a single-digit salute to DC Comics and the buffoons running the company for holding back the Titans special until after Bob Haney’s death.

  2. Pedro Bouça Says:

Michael Farr’s Complete Companion is great and I don’t doubt this book will be too, but there already is an “Adventures of Hergé” book out there! A comic biography by Boucquet and Stanislas that was published in english in one of the Drawn & Quarterly big anthologies!

I don’t doubt they are very different books, but I DO think that Farr, who is surely aware of the older book, should have chosen another name for his work!

    Best,
    Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

  3. Skipper Pickle Says:

Atomic Robo is my favorite new find. Even if it does crib from Hellboy, who doesn’t need more Hellboy? Especially one i can read (so far, anyway) with the kids.
