Just to make it clear, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Rall citing Berlatsky per se–I’m just kind of surprised he did. I’m not sure if this means (a) Rall didn’t read the review in question; (b) he did read the review and is professional enough not to care; or (c) there’s really no critic out there as respectable as Berlatsky who has dismissed Ware, et. al., to Rall’s satisfaction.

Also–”some formal skill”? “Some”? Even Rall is more generous than that.

Ware has some formal skill, but he hits the same damn emotional button OVER AND OVER AND OVER.

Alienation, loneliness, depression- repeat cycle. It’s the very definition of monotonous.

He still hasn’t explained why he used “crapulent” (which generally means “ill feeling relating to excessive consumption of food or drink”) when he appears to actually mean “crappy.”

A patina of respectability perhaps? Or too many viewings of “The Simpsons”?

It’s interesting to me how little Kelso’s comic gets mentioned in all this (once that I saw). Besides Hernandez’s story (whose work I love), Kelso’s is the only of these NYT comics that I kept up with every week for its entire run. It was visually and thematically much different than any of the other pieces.

Is it because she’s a woman cartoonist? Or just because of the group, she is by far the least “alt comix superstar” of them all.
