Vertigo’s Crossing Midnight to end?

December 27th, 2007
Author Kevin Melrose

Although I haven’t seen an official announcement, Crossing Midnight cover artist JH Williams III reveals the Vertigo series is coming to an end.

“Just finished the last 3 covers to Crossing Midnight and my single interior page contribution to issue 16, fully colored by myself as well (click on image below),” he writes on his blog. “It saddens me that this series is ending so soon. I really enjoyed working on it and really tried to give the covers an unusual perspective while still being creatively dynamic.”

Seeing as March’s Issue 17 is the first part of a new storyline, I presume the series will end with Issue 20.

The supernatural-horror series, by writer Mike Carey and artist Jim Fern, launched in November 2006.

Crap. I love this book. It’s smart, it’s different, it’s clever and digs deep into a culture unlike most of the Western world, yet is universal in its themes. So of course it’s getting cancelled.

With the gobs of money DC makes off Countdown and other such ilk, why in the hell can’t they support books like this, or at least give them some kind of advertising (somewhere other than inside the other Vertigo books, that is)?

The fact that DC and Vertigo have to be handled completely idependently of each other, with no cross-marketing or anything, seems asinine to me.

I know, I know, we don’t want the kiddies reading anything with swear words or boobies. One word: Parenting.

    Well that’s just sucky.

    Seconded.

Yeah, great book, but I’ve seen this coming since American Virgin got axed. Still, sad to see it confirmed. Here’s hoping Scalped sticks around a bit longer.

Good book, but not a great book, and sales are terrible. At least Carey will get to wrap it up right.

I do hope that’s the case. I’d hate to have invested the time in the story to have no payoff.

Hopefully Scalped will benefit from the good buzz from other writers, the money back guarantee from Jason Aaron, as well as Aaron’s higher profile from upcoming work on Ghost Rider and Wolverine.

Scalped is the best book Vertigo is publishing and it deserves a much wider larger readership.

I agree that Crossing Midnight is good and solid, not fantastic, but it’s still better than most of what’s out there.

Scalped is apparently doing real well in trade form, so hopefully it’ll stick around for a while. It’s the only Vertigo book I feel like buying in issue form.
