I didn’t know much –actually, anything — about Will Smith’s next film, Hancock , until someone sent me a link to the film’s trailer on JoBlo.com. And I still don’t know what it looks like, because I can’t get the player to work for me. Moviefone has a description of the film:
A hard-drinking superhero with a notorious reputation as a womanizer enters into an unlikely affair with a small-town housewife in director Peter Berg’s unconventional look at the private life of a superhuman crime-fighter. Will Smith stars as the embittered do-gooder whose lifestyle is more akin to a rock star than a role model, and who has grown as disillusioned with his once-admiring public as they have of him.
The film is due in July. I’ve put the movie code up after the jump … maybe you’ll have better luck.
EDIT: When all else fails, try YouTube (thanks Sean).
With Smith’s involvement, it seems like this would be a natural trailer to have in front of I Am Legend right about now, and maybe some theaters are doing that. The one where I saw Legend didn’t, but then again, they didn’t have the Dark Knight trailer in front of it, either. All I got was Rambo and Cloverfield. Crappy Cinelux.

old school kind of way?

Isn’t this the movie that was supposed to be a drama called “Tonight He Comes”?
Here’s what it was supposed to be, I think:

Somewhere along the way, it became a “hilarious” comedy?

Yeah, either they’re only showing the cheery bits in the trailer, or “Tonight He Comes” got more than a name change when it became “John Hancock” and later simply “Hancock.”
Shame if it’s the latter. A dark, adult superhero film, devoid of any familiar franchises, would be a great change of pace.

Maybe the script didn’t change much. A lot of the comedy in that trailer is physical or gag related. All the dialog that was dark and dramatic in the script might still be there.
Plus, the trailer did start off with Hancock sleeping on a park bench. That seems a bit like dark comedy.

Eh. I’m highly skeptical of any superhero parody movie… seeing as there’s *never* been a good one!
In fact, back when Hancock was first announced, I wrote about in a post called “Five Movies That Remind Us What’s Wrong with Superhero Parodies”:

I’m going to guess “Tonight he Comes” was changed to avoid laughs from teens, so they decided “Hancock” was better?
I swear, movie studios need to hire teens in advance. “Would ‘Balls in the the Hole’ be a good title for our Brad Pitt golf drama? Why are you laughing?”

Joe, I’m betting that they knew exactly what reaction they’d get when they picked that name. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the jokes were actually in the movie.
